Drug Use And Drug Related Public Health Concerns Essay

English 101 Index 1293

Persuasive Essay
Countries all over the world are dealing with a rise of drug use and drug related public health
concerns. Many nations adopt vaguely similar methods of battling the War on Drugs , from strict
border control to harsh criminal punishments for drug related offenders, violent or not. Even with
these efforts put in place, many places are not seeing the desired results. Drug use is mainly treated
like a crime, and that may be the problem. Countries that have concerns with rising drug use among
their citizens should follow Portugal in decriminalizing the possession and use of small quantities of
all illicit drugs.
Portugal was in the midst of a drug crisis. A large number Portuguese people that returned to
Portugal after the military dictatorship that ended in 1974 were using drugs. (Thornton) Hard drugs
were getting into the country easily due to open borders. The country saw a surge in numerous
public health concerns such as drug abuse, addiction, overdosing, and new cases of HIV/AIDS. In
1999, nearly one per cent of the population a hundred thousand people were heroin addicts, and
Portugal reported the highest rate of drug related AIDS deaths in the European Union. (Spector)
Initially, the government responded with traditional methods of drug control policies that
criminalized drug users harshly with prison and fines, (Aleem) but the policies weren t working
very well. The
Pre Lab Report Essay
2. How did the results compare to the pre lab predictions?
The pre lab prediction for the white vinegar solution was that there would be a decrease in mass and
a decrease in the circumference of the egg, therefore, there would be an increase in volume because
the white vinegar solution is hypertonic to the egg.
The results contradicted the pre lab prediction as evidenced in the results with a 20% change in the
volume of the white vinegar. Instead, there was an inflow of water into the egg which increased the
mass and the circumference. This was an outcome of the membrane attempting to reach an
equilibrium with its internal and external environment employing osmosis.
The pre lab prediction for the distilled water was that there would be an increase in mass and an
increase in the circumference of the egg, therefore, there would be an increase in volume because the
white vinegar solution is hypotonic to the egg.

None of the solutions were isotonic, therefore none of the substances stayed at the same volume
throughout the period. If one of the solutions were isotonic, the volume percentage on the graph
would be 0%. As shown, there is no solution resembling this graph point.
6.What is special about the cell membrane that allows only certain materials to pass through?
What is special about the cell membrane is that it is selectively permeable. A selectively
permeable membrane is when certain molecules or ions pass through or exit the membrane. This
is important for the process of osmosis to work. It allows substances and the cell to reach
equilibrium between each other. Without osmosis, our bodies would be unable to replace water
that is lost from processes like sweating. This would lead to dehydration and cells shriveling up and
dying. The process of osmosis and the selectively permeable membrane help our bodies replenish
water and
Essay about John Edwards Biography
John Edwards Biography
Many Americans recognize John Edwards as the second coming of Jimmy Carter; the soft spoken
Democratic Senator from the south. They know him as the running mate of John Kerry in his 2004
Presidential campaign. But before the North Carolina Senator entertained aspirations of President or
Vice President of the United States, John Edwards made a name for himself as a successful trial
lawyer, a strong husband and father, and charismatic politician.
Born in Seneca, South Carolina on June 10th 1953, Johnny Reid Edwards was raised a Methodist
and learned the values of hard work and perseverance from his father, Wallace and mother, Bobbie,
while growing up in Robbins, North Carolina. Working alongside his father in ... Show more content

In Congress, Senator Edwards quickly emerged as a champion for the issues that make a
difference to American families: quality health care, better schools, protecting civil liberties,
preserving the environment, saving Social Security and Medicare, and reforming the ways
campaigns are financed. As a member of the Select Committee on Intelligence, Senator Edwards
worked tirelessly for a strong national defense, and strengthening the security of our homeland. He
authored key pieces of legislation on Internet and port security, as well as biological terrorism.
During the latter part of 2001 and throughout 2002, Edwards engaged in serious politicking, and
on January 2, 2003, he announced the formation of a presidential exploratory committee, declaring
himself a champion for regular folks. On September 16th 2003, in front of the old Milliken Mill
(his father s workplace of thirty six years) in Robbins, North Carolina, Sen. Edwards formally
announced his candidacy for President during the 2004 elections. Although there was no rule or law
against his inhabitance of a Senate seat while running for President, John Edwards announced that he
would not seek re election, so that he could focus all of his efforts toward his Presidential campaign.
Some viewed Edwards as a very viable candidate, given his success as a Senator in North Carolina.
He also had a
The Role Of Women In Jacob s Life
Discuss the role and status of women in the life described in the first 71 pages of the novel.
Each women has a status of head wife, second wife and etc. Leah and Rachel both took turns as
head wife when it comes to cleaning cooking, and attending to Jacob s needs. Rachel became a
midwife apprentice because she could not give birth for a very long time, unlike her sister wives.
Women also had the role of giving life and raising sons and take responsibilities of a male until a son
is born into a family. They also worshiped fertility gods to maintain good health for the babies they
give birth to. Overall in this time, women are just servants to men and give life to continue the
ancient tradition of families
Discuss positive, negative, and interesting aspects of polygamist family structure which Diamant
depicts.

Minors and the Death Penalty
A.Should the death penalty be given to minors? The two groups against this issue, are the religious
and medical groups. They believe they are too young to know what they have done. The medical
groups believe adolescents are less developed than adults and should not be held to the same
standards. . The opposing side, held mostly by state officials, feel if they are old enough to commit
the crimethey, old enough to get the punishment, including death.
B. The very first execution of a minor was in1642 with Thomas Graunger in Plymouth Colony,
Massachesetts. In the three hundred years since that time, a total of approximately 365 persons have
been executed for juvenile crimes, constituting 1.8 percent of roughly twenty thousand ... Show more

showed the case of Stanford v. Kentucky which was for the execution of a minor. The majority in
case acknowledged age as a mitigating factor in death sentencing, but, in an opinion written by
Justice Antonin Scalia, said the national climate didn t rule out the death penalty simply because of
the age of the offender.
G.The Kantian view of death penalty is a retributive view that sees the criminal as a parasite who
has accepted the benefits of a legal system while refusing to pay the price of self restraint. Such a
person owes the law abiding a debt for he has gained an unfair advantage over them. Punishment is
the means of exacting the debt (in kind) and is a demand for justice the restoration of a condition of
equality between the law breaker and society. Just punishment is binding and not to be mitigated by
any utilitarian consideration. Kant also believes in blood guilt and the necessity for cleansing
criminal actions.
H. This issue is pretty touchy to me, because i could support both side of minor being put to death.
I agree with if they do the crime, they can do the time, but at the same time they are just little kids

Examples Of Antiheros
Antiheroes: neither villains nor supermen but the tragic heroes of daily life. Discussing the
depiction of the male American antihero within the framework of this thesis in the cases of Lester
Burnham, Frank Wheeler, and Brandon Sullivan refers to white men from (upper) middle class
leading a drab, emotionally unfulfilling life in the US in New York City and suburbs in
Connecticut, to be exact. First of all, one needs to clarify what exactly makes and antiheroand what
distinguishes him from other (stock) characters. To begin with, the Compact Oxford English
Dictionaryfor Students defines antihero as a central character in a story, film, or play who lacks
typical heroic qualities (Soanes 36). Therefore, it becomes relevant also to list the dictionary
definition of the words hero and heroic :

films about social criticism of Western consumer culture such as Fight Club (1999), or modern
TV series such as Breaking Bad. The Concise Oxford Dictionary of Literary Terms further lists
Flaubert s Emma Bovary in Madame Bovary (1857), Joyce s Leopold Bloom in Ulysses (1922),
and Arthur Miller s Willy Loman in Death of a Salesman as outstanding examples of this antiheroic
ordinariness and inadequacy and describes the antihero as ineffectual failure who succumbs to the
pressure of circumstances (Baldick, 13). Frank Eugene Beaver goes a step further, adding
characteristics that are particularly interesting for this thesis. His antihero notion of antihero refers to

Taking a Look at the Golden Ratio
Golden Ratio is found by dividing a line into two parts so that the longer part divided by the
smaller part equals the whole length divided by the longer part. Golden ratio is very similar to pi
because it is an infinite number and it goes on forever. It is usually rounded to around 1.618. The
formula for golden ratiois a/b = (a+b)/b. It has been around for a long time so it is not known who
made up the golden ratio. Since the golden ratio is used all around the world it is known in many
names such as the golden mean, phi, the divine proportion, extreme and mean proportion, etc.
Golden ratio was used in arts from the beginning of people and still is used today. It has been used
in architecture, math, sculptures and nature. Euclid talks about it in his book elements. Golden
ratio is also used in Fibonacci numbers and Lucas numbers. Golden ratio also comes in the form
of a rectangle. Golden has been found in many places over and over, so it s not clear where the
golden ratio originated or who found the golden ratio but some say that the Pythagoreans were
the first to bring up the idea of the golden ratio. Due to the discovery in many places, it gets many
names. Euclid wrote about the golden ratio in his book, The Elements. The Element is a book
about geometry. In Euclid s book, he describes the golden ratio as the extreme and mean ratio. He
says the line is divided into mean and ratio by point c. It also explains what a golden ratio is even
though he did not call it golden
My Personal Online Portfolio
Presenting on my personal online portfolio was a great experience since not many presentations are
individual based. With many assignments leading up to one major task, students were challenged
throughout the semester to eventually present themselves to a fictitious group of employers.
Throughout this short essay, I will reflect on the creation of the professional online portfolio as well
as experiencing the actual presentation. Creating the POP Not only did I enjoy the creation of the
POP, it helped me think back in my past and explore areas I had forgotten about. It s somewhat
like an interview; you must recollect memories of times you were successful at work and in
academics. With Wix, the website builder, I was able to design the site how I wanted it to look. I
remember creating a Wix website about five years ago and the advancement of the online
software is incredible. Back then, it was very lame and very bland. In utilizing the cloud based
software today, I was given full creativity and could express myself creatively. My favorite part of
my POP are the sections in which you can scroll from slide to slide. Instead of crowding my
website with boxes and forcing the reader s eyes to shoot everywhere, I designed my interests and
academic projects areas into a single box with a sliding queue. Of course, the interests and academic
projects are in different boxes and sections, but they are set up the
To Each His Own by Leonardo Sciascia
IB English 11 World Literature Essay To Each His Own
An anonymous person once said, Who gossips with you will gossip of you . This quote is saying
that whoever shares gossip with an individual about someone or something will not hesitate when
talking about the same person with another individual. Gossip is in no way a new idea, since many
people at one point in their lives have taken part in a conversation about another individual s
personal business. Every day, especially in modern day society, many men and women are
susceptible to gossip and its consequences. One major consequence includes false information
being spread around, which causes people to become misled; this may eventually cause loss of a
person s reputation. The way gossip can affect many different things is presented in a plethora of
scenarios in life and literature. An analysis of literary terms and techniques in Leonardo Sciascia s
novel To Each His Own demonstrates the idea that gossip in small towns may sometimes be
extremely virulent since it is spreading false information and can affect one s reputation through the
vilification of that person.

I Am Number Four Comparison Essay
What would you do if extraterrestrial life came to Earth, running for their lives and trying to get
home? This is a question posed in many Science fiction films, books, and texts. In particular, the
novel I Am Number Four by Pittacus Lore and the 2009 film Race to Witch Mountain by Andy
Fickman. These two texts show contrasting outcomes of what humankind s response to the unknown
may be. The creators of these two texts display the influence of stereotypes, fears which humankind
holds, and humanlikeness to speculate the possible outcomes of human interaction with
extraterrestrial life.
In I am Number Four, John Smith, the protagonist, struggles to fit into the human world as he runs
from the Mogadorians, a hostile race of aliens that destroyed his home world. He slowly grows into
his powers, as well as making human friends in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Pittacus Lore uses qualities defined as human and of living creatures on Earth to highlight the
likeness between the Loric people and humankind. Emotions are something only humans and
intelligent forms of life are thought to experience. They are incredibly intimate, and the use of first
person perspective makes the reader privy to the protagonist s thoughts and feelings. This makes
John Smith a more relatable character and more likely to be perceived as humanlike. During the trip
to Witch Mountain, Seth asks Are we there yet? This is a rhetorical question used to add comic relief
in the face of the climax in the plot of Race to Witch Mountain. It may also have been used to show
that aliens may not be so different from humans, since human children are known to say this, and
this line has been used in many other films and novels. The use of first person perspective,
personification, and rhetorical questions display the influence of human resemblance upon the
outcome of the interaction between humans and extraterrestrial
Who Is Scyld Scefing In Beowulf
A great boat rocks against the icy waves, eager to set sail. People stand along the shoreline, gazing at
the ship with sad faces. Their King s days are over and it is his time to cross into the Lord s keeping.
Scyld Scefing is praised for being a great King for the Danes. He is famous for his accomplishments
and being loyal to his people. In the prologue of Beowulf, Scyld Scefing origins, rise to power, and
death stand out noticeably. The origins of Scyld Scefing is found in the prologue of Beowulf. The
poem starts off as a grand epic of history, similar to that of the Old Testament. There are lists of
people, their heritage, and their lineage. Beowulf does not start with Beowulf or even his famous
battles with Grendel, Grendel s mother,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The funeral for Scyld is representative of his personality as shown through his deeds and way he
lived his life. Though Scyld was a valiant warrior and King, his life and youth was rather different
than many others of his ranking. The movement characteristics of his funeral is a continuation of
his boldness and power with which he sailed through life with. Scyld was on a continuous
forward motion from a low to a high lifestyle, which this motion does not cease after his death.
The poem continues to say, Forth he fared at the fated moment,/ sturdy Scyld to the shelter of
God (26 27). This line proves that even his people were determined that their King should keep
moving even though his life was taken from him. So they, bore him over to ocean s billow (28).
He is place in a boat and is taken by the waves, on a journey to a higher and more celebratory place.
It is as if this burial demonstrates that Scyld is being promoted in his position. From poor, to rich, to
King, to living with the One True King in
