Introduction:
Why We Chose This Movie:
The Devil Wears Prada was our choice because it realistically and relatably
addresses a number of Organizational Behavior (OB) difficulties. It depicts a young
worker's experience navigating pressure, leadership issues, and personal identity
struggle in a challenging workplace. The events and characters depict the realities
of contemporary workplaces.
Summary of the Film:
The film centers on Andy Sachs, a young journalist who works as Miranda
Priestly's assistant at a prestigious fashion magazine. After initially struggling,
Andy adjusts and succeeds. However, she experiences moral quandaries and loses
her sense of self in the process. She eventually resigns in order to lead a more
balanced life.
Main Theme:
"Career Success vs. Personal Identity," or the conflict between pursuing one's
career goals and upholding one's morals and personal life, is the main theme.

OB Topic Analysis:
1. Definition of Leadership Style:
A leader's interaction and effect on their team are characterized by their
leadership style, which might include transformational, democratic, or
authoritarian approaches.
Scene Example: Miranda Priestly expects her team to produce outcomes without
question and offers them aloof, silent orders. In one scene, she silently tosses her
coat upon Andy's desk.
Rating: 5 out of 10.
Justification: Miranda produces positive outcomes but fosters a poisonous
atmosphere. Fear-based leadership stifles originality and candid communication.
Real-World Connection: Although authoritarian leadership may be effective in the
short term, it eventually lowers employee morale in actual firms. Instead of
intimidating, leaders should inspire.

2. Organizational Culture Definition:

A company's common values, beliefs, and customs that influence behavior are
known as its organizational culture.
Scene Example: The office atmosphere at Runway is perfectionist, fashion-
obsessed, and high-pressure. Employees are evaluated based on their
commitment and looks.
Rating: 6 out of 10.
Justification: The culture promotes performance but also causes mental illness
and fatigue.
Real-World Connection: While strong cultures can improve performance, they can
also lower engagement and retention if they are overly rigid or at odds with
employee values.

3. Motivation Definition:
Motivation is the drive, either internal or external, that propels individuals to act
and strive toward their objectives.
Scene Example: Andy is driven to establish her worth. She conducts personal
tasks for her boss, works hard, and changes her clothes. She later wonders if it's
worthwhile.
Rating: 7 out of 10.
Reason: Although Andy is driven, he eventually feels emotionally spent. She
becomes more motivated by introspection than by achievement.
Real-World Connection: Instead of focusing solely on pressure or rewards,
managers can encourage intrinsic motivation and make sure staff members are
working toward worthwhile objectives.

4. Communication Definition:
In order to coordinate and make decisions, people or groups must exchange
information.
Scene Example: Miranda's communication is not always clear. She makes
ambiguous remarks and assumes that people will comprehend her without
detailed guidance.
Rating: 4 out of 10.
The team becomes confused, stressed, and ineffective as a result of poor
communication.
Real-World Connection: Effective communication minimizes miscommunication
and fosters trust. Feedback and open communication improve team performance.

5. Work-Life Balance Definition:

The ability to effectively balance one's personal and professional obligations is
known as work-life balance.
Scene Example: Andy loses contact with pals and misses her boyfriend's birthday.
She eventually discovers that her work is having an impact on her emotional and
mental well-being.
Rating: 3 out of 10.
Reason: Andy's life is totally consumed by her work, leaving no time for her own
health.
Real-World Connection: To avoid turnover and burnout, organizations should
promote healthy boundaries and flexible scheduling.
Conclusion:
Lessons Learned:
We learn from this film that although professional advancement is vital, it
shouldn't come at the expense of one's pleasure or well-being. Employee well-
being is greatly influenced by leadership, motivation, and communication, and a
job should be in line with one's ideals.
How the Movie Reflects Workplace Realities:
Real workplace issues are depicted in The Devil Wears Prada, including a
poisonous culture, poor leadership communication, ambiguous expectations, and
personal sacrifice. These are typical in today's high-pressure workplaces. The film
urges businesses and executives to establish more wholesome, encouraging
workplaces where individuals may thrive while maintaining their sense of self.
