1. Acquisition of books and non-books Materials:
Types of Materials
A library collection is an assemblage of physical information sources
combined with virtual access to selected and organized information
sources.
Types of Materials:
• Books, e-books
• Periodicals / regular publications: journals, e-journals,
• magazines, newspapers, census, reports, etc.
• Microfilms, slides
• Audiovisual recordings: cassette tapes, CD, DVDs, etc
• Unpublished materials: Theses, manuscripts,
• research papers, letters, minutes, photographs, etc. 3

3. Preservation and Conservation of Library Materials
• Preservation and conservation (PAC) are commonly used
interchangeably. Preservation means regular maintenance of library
material, whereas Conservation means the remedial treatment and
restoration of the already damaged material.
Causes of Deterioration : according to R.S. Singh
• -Physical agents : light, moisture, heat and particles
• -Chemical agents : acidity, gaseous pollutants
• -Biological agents : bacteria, fungi, insects, rodents
• -Accidental agents : flood, fire, etc.
• Internal Cause : Paper-based materials, Ink
• External Cause : Light
• Temperature and Relative Humidity (RH)
