Hydraulic Civilizations and the Philanthropic Industrialists
1. Historical Origins
For many planners and historians the origin of ancient cities has been a source of fascination and
the cause for much research and debate. One theory developed by the German American historian
Karl Wittfogel was that of hydraulic civilizations (Minnery 2010a). Hydraulic civilizations were
described as those whose agricultural system was reliant upon significant government directed water
systems for irrigation and flood management (Encyclopædia Britannica 2010). Wittfogel listed that
Egypt, India, Mesopotamia, Northern China and pre Columbian Mexico and Peru were examples of
hydraulic civilizations (Minnery 2010a). This paper will focus on the theories of the Wittfogel s
hydraulic civilization and then try to draw ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One other dissimilarity is that of Brisbane s environment. It isn t arid or semi arid in fact it was
once lined with sand covered beaches and the water was clear and blue (Our Indooroopilly 2002).
Therefore it is difficult to prove that Brisbane has similar qualities to that of a hydraulic civilization
and Wittfogel s theories can be left in the past with the Old World . 3. The Philanthropic Industrialist
The United Kingdom in the late eighteenth and nineteenth century was home to the bustling and
demanding Industrial Revolution. Factories emerged all over the country as technology advanced
into an era of mass production. In many of these factories the conditions were unclean, unsafe and
ultimately appalling. Some factory owners however, sought out to improve the quality of life for
their workers. These few are recognised as the Philanthropic Industrialists . They implemented what
has become known as the company town which saw the social and economic qualities of the
township under the control of the industrialist (Pollard 1964). This paper will discuss one UK
example in the town of New Lanark, in particular the philanthropy of Robert Owen and will examine
whether this town and Owen s theories have been influential up until the present day.

New Lanark in Scotland was initially founded by David Dale in 1785 (The Open University 2009).
The Clyde River which ran along New Lanark s location provided water to power the four
The Panama Deception Summary
The documentary, The Panama Deception, narrates a historical event which happened at 1989. In
December of that year, the United States started the invasion of Panama, code named Operation
Just Cause. The operation involved 27,684 U.S. troops and over 300 aircraft. They secretly
attacked at midnight with 27 targets many of which were densely populated. After about 10 hours
of intense battle, the U.S. army had occupied almost all Panama s military camps and overthrown
the government which was controlled by Manuel Noriega. The documentary showed the bias in the
news by using a combination of first hand video from Panama and what was reported in the U.S.
TV. From the huge difference between the video and the TV, we can guess that the government were
hiding something. President Bush addressed a speech about the reason for war on news, The goals
of the United Stateshave been to safeguard the lives of Americans, to defend democracy in Panama,
to combat drug trafficking and to protect the integrity of the Panama CanalTreaty. Many attempts
have been made to resolve this crisis through diplomacy and negotiations. All were rejected by the
dictator of Panama, General Manuel Noriega, an indicted drug trafficker. The reason seems
reasonable but actually it is totally non sense. The invasion is illegal and injustice.... Show more

The U.S. government ignored Panama s independent movement through 1800. But when the U.S.
government decided to build the canal, the attitude abruptly changed. After sending force to expedite
the liberation of Panama, the U.S. took over the project of the canal, which was abandoned by the
French. In the treaty with Panama in 1903, America was granted the right to the control 10 miles
striped land which was called the canal zone. Then the United States immediately put the canal zone
under military control. Panama did not have national sovereignty in this
Analysis Of Martin Luther King Jr. s Letter From...
By the 1960s, the American Civil Rights movement was at its peak. Years of segregation and
discrimination of African Americans led to several outbursts of disobedience. Martin Luther King
Jr s, Letter from Birmingham Jail delivered a critical response to Alabama clergymen s letter and
did so by accurately depicting the struggle of African Americans during 1950s 1970s, specifying the
cruel segregation of the time and defending his methods of extremism and civil disobedience.
Dating as far back at the time of slavery, African Americans have have fought back against
suppression. The first, and only successful slave revolt was in 1831. It was led by Nat Turner, a
slave in Virginia who led a group of over seventy slaves in an attempt for a revolution that ended in
over one hundred casualties. Other key moment in African American history was the Underground
Railroad where Harriet Tubman helped tens of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, after being called an outsider by the Alabama clergymen, King states that he is not,
he was asked to come to Birmingham by a local member. This was true, Reverend Fred
Shuttlesworth had asked MLK Jr. to come after he was unable to hold a successful protest.
Throughout his letter, Dr. King repeatedly wrote about the unjust, segregation laws faced by
African Americans. Obviously, this was true as there were numerous laws that separated whites
from blacks in almost every aspect of society. He states one being particularly saddening, where he
has to tell recalls telling his 6 year old daughter why she can t go to the public amusement park that
has just been advertised on television and then seeing her cry (Letter from Birmingham Jail) . Thus,
Letter from Birmingham Jail is a key part of understanding life during the Civil Rights Movement,
because the author is writing truthfully and had experienced the struggles
Houston City Case Study
Houston s belief in low costs, privatization and decentralization is apparent in the structure and
practices of the Harris County Flood Control District (HCFCD) which administers to the third most
populous county in the United States. The HCFCD is a special purpose district organized in 1937 to
design, implement and maintain floodreduction infrastructure and programs for the entirety of the
county including HoustonCity. For this, they retain only 380 full time employees. This necessitates
that nearly all engineering design and maintenance work for capital projects is contracted to the
private sector through a bidding process. Similarly, 100% of routine maintenance in contracted out to

Belly Dancing Ottoman Empire
Belly dancing in the Ottoman Empire was very common. Sol Bloom was credited with coming
up with the term Belly dance in 1899. Belly dancers were performed by both male and female.
During this time men became increasingly popular all over the world therefore, were considered
female impersonators by some. They were also actors and musicians, because women were not
allowed to perform in public. Now a days Turkish male belly dancers are becoming extremely
popular in nightclubs and television shows.

Turkish belly dancers were very flamboyant. Although their costumes were flirtatious and playful.
They were normally made to show more of the dancers body and had lots of cut outs. In the 1970s
and 1980s the outfits were typically a bra top, dance
Urban Poverty In Rural America
The growing rates of unemployment correlate with the higher rates of poverty seen in rural America
compared to urban areas. The graph below demonstrates the gap between rural and urban poverty
rates. In addition, many of the manufacturing jobs that still exist provide low wages. With residents
earning less money than their urban counterparts, housing is in some cases less obtainable than in
metropolitan areas.

Income and Poverty in the United States from 2015 (Procter et al).

With nearly three of every four rural poor households paying at least 30 percent of their incomes
for housing and with substantial numbers paying 50 percent and even 70 percent little money is
left for other necessities (Lazere, 22). To make matters worse, rural America is currently
experiencing the same gentrification issue that is widely seen in major urban areas today. Alan
Greenblatt summarizes the situation by saying, as professionals move in, that raises prices and puts
a squeeze on all the people making a living pumping gas or selling ... Show more content on

He argues that the tech boom directly caused a massive influx of workers with high incomes into
the Bay Area and there was no feasible way that the region could have built enough units to meet
that sudden supply. The Bay, as a result, has continued to become whiter and wealthier as tech jobs
allow workers to easily out bid previous inhabitants of the Bay. Not mention the fact that low density
zoning has been increasingly used by wealthy groups to block high rise apartment complexes that
would provide housing to non elite residents. In order to combat the growing inaccessibility to
housing, Walker believes we need to address the role credit and capital, boom and bust cycles, and
the spatial preferences of the elite played into the Bay Area housing crisis (Redmond,
Summary Of Monster By Walter Dean Myers
What are the odds of a sixteen year old being guilty of murder that they have no proof? In Monster
by Walter Dean Myers this is the most substantial problem, Steve Harmon, who is sixteen and
James King who is at the age twenty three are both being accused of the murder of a man named
Alguinaldo Nesbitt. The reason that Steve Harmon is being accused is because many witnesses
are saying they saw Harmon as wells as King at the store that was robbed and resulted in the
murder of Mr. Nesbitt. Witnesses and prisoners are telling what their truth is, during the trial or not.
Clearly, truth is what one believes is right. To begin with, Harmon s defense attorney Kathy O Brien
clearly shows that the truth is what one believes in. This is especially

Iraq s Capital And Its Impact On The World
Introduction The foundation of a people s economy, politics, and security lies in its knowledge.
There is no more lasting way to transfer such knowledge than through a book. With a vision of
securing the future of Muslims, ancient Arabic Islamic civilization worked hard to build public
libraries where every son and daughter of Allah could learn from the past and build the future.
Perhaps, no city has played a more major role in this pursuit than Baghdad. Baghdad, through the
ages, has fueled the development of the arts and the sciences. The reputation of Iraqs capital was
synonymous to learning in the ancient world. Its academic influence spread to different countries,
cultures, and dialects. Baghdad is also a reflection of the challenges that Muslims faced in their goal
to preserve knowledge. Just like the famed city, other Islamic cities and states have lost many
libraries due to conflicts and wars. It is estimated that throughout history, the Muslim world lost
nearly eight million books and great libraries, like the Cortoba libraryin Iberia and Dar Al Elm
library in Egypt. To better appreciate the Islamic civilization s contribution to knowledge and to
understand the issues that hinder us from developing our academic sources, this essay will discuss
the rise and fall of one of the world s greatest libraries, Bait Al Hikmah, more commonly known as,
The House of Wisdom.

food market which amounts to 75% combined. Three of these companies operate in the US with
products located in the pet isle in supermarkets, which means that First in Show Pet Food, Inc. is
the only player in the frozen food section which gives them a significant advantage over their

Famine From A Socioeconomic Theoretical Lens
According to Kutzner, author of world hunger, there is enough food to feed everyone in the world.
With much of the world s agriculture being produced out of developing countries, (Kutzner), the root
causes of starvation is within the economic and political factors keeping countries in poverty.
Although natural catastrophes and environmental problems for food production have contributed to
the food securityissue in third world countries such as Ethiopia and Malawi, the Faminecrisis in these
countries is man made, and is ultimately the result of issues including government policies on food
markets and exports. In analyzing the root causes of food insecurity in the two developing countries
Ethiopia and Malawi, I will be focusing on man made famine from a socioeconomic theoretical lens,
focusing on factors such as population, employment, and poverty. I have come to the hypothesis that
famine in these two countries is made made due to the policies that keep these countries from
modernizing. I predict that due to the current economic conditions, the issue will not be resolved any
time soon.

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines food security as existing when all people at all
times have access to sufficient, safe, nutritious food to maintain a healthy and active life (who.com).
The basic elements of food security includes having a large enough food supply to meet nutritional
needs, as well as having the access to attain this food (Kutzner). In a wider perspective,
