Catcher In The Rye And Donnie Darko Analysis
Texts cannot exist outside their context; texts implicitly and explicitly embody the values of the
society of which they are written. Both The Catcher in the Rye and Donnie Darko depict the
societal norms of the period the texts were set in. However, Salinger s novel and Kelly s film both
portray the protagonist of their text to be classified an outsider; subverting norms and rebelling
against those in power. Catcher in the Rye, a bildungsroman masterpiece is set in the late 1940 s in
America, and consequently, focuses on the contextual ideology of the American Dream. Donnie
Darkoa sci.fi film made in 2001 however, is set in a period of conservatism in America in the late
1980 s. Despite, differing contexts, both pieces accurately explore the beneficial and dire
implications associated with transgressing social conventions.
Donnie Darko, the namesake of the film and his anti institutional behaviour provides insight into
the perils and prospects of going against society. Despite the film s release in 2001, Kelly placed
the film in 1988 to project his message on the family values agenda, a consequence of political
oppression with wide spread support for the conservatives. The main advocates behind this notion in
the film are seen to be Mrs Farmer and Cunningham, both of whom Darko viewed as forces of
tyranny and solely challenges. Donnie may have had a suburban upbringing, however, Donnie will
have no part in withholding traditional family values, where he is seen to take
The Parthian Battery
The use of electricity may go back further known as the Parthian Battery. The battery dates back to
the Parthian empire and is believed to be 2,000 years old. However, the battery is known from its
creator Alessandro Volta (a chemist and physicist and pioneer of electrical science). Volta is known
for voltaic electricity (same as volts) and for many other things. The basic property of a battery is
that two objects work as electrodes, causing an electrochemical reaction which generates voltage.
5] Write down the composition of that object. What materials / compounds / elements are used to
make that object? The battery consists of three major parts, the positive electrode known as the
cathode, the negative electrode (anode} which is two electrodes ... Show more content on

Do you see alternatives or better materials that can be used? How might this object look like in
future (in a material perspective)?
A battery generates electricity, or a current of electrons through a conductive path and there is a
buildup of electrons through a chemical reaction in the battery. Batteries can be stored for a long
time and still work because the chemical process doesn t start until the electrons flow from the
negative to the positive terminals through a circuit. Volta discovered in 1800 that certain fluids
would generate a continuous flow of electrical power when used as a conductor. This discovery led
to the invention of the first voltaic cell, more commonly known as battery.
9] Write a short biographical history of one of the inventors involved in the development of that
object or device or material. The battery is a device that converts chemical energy into electricity.
Like most important inventions, this device has many different versions originating from the 19th
century
10] From the composition of the object (No. 5 above), choose a material, a compound, or an
element and describe it in details according to rubric below:

Neckties Myths
The Funny Stories Of Neckties Rather improbably, perhaps, the necktie may have originated with
the ancient Egyptians. Wrapped around the neck and a long rectangular fabric is hanging on the
shoulder. It is similar to a short shawl and that is the prototype of neckties in the legend. This
accessory has very important implication which represents the wearer s social status in ancient
Egypt. Not the ordinary civilians, only the noble is eligible to wear it. Of ancient Egypt the modern
tie is the derivative of a conceptual product which is a symbol of the feudal system in a sense.
Inherited through the necktie evolution, it represents a clear class differentiation. There are even
more stories on the neckties in the Europe among which the British... Show more content on

Due to the old legend the wars were frequent in Europe. In 1688, King Louis XIV in France
started the war to Austria. At that time the Austrian soldiers wore a white scarf around the neck
as an identity. The Croatta scarf was a favorite of the king. Louis even created his own scarf and
wore it around the castle. After a while, he was bored by the plain style of Croatta so he began to
make a new design for the scarf, such as adding the embroidery lace and tying a butterfly knot. As
Louis set the example by adopting this accessory, it became all the rage at court. Furthermore, as
soon as the trend spread to the Army, everyone began to follow it. King Louis did a lot for Croatia
since an army has Croatta s name. For the necktie development in the history the promotion by the
king Louis is very important. Had King Louis XIV not embraced this fashion, neckties might not be
worn today. The king had no idea how important his promotion for the modern fashion within next
hundreds of years. The Croatta has been evolved into two categories in the current fashion industry:
One is the bow tie from the upward development and the other is the necktie with the downward
The Role Of Language In 1984 By George Orwell
George Orwell s 1984 was written in the year 1948 as Orwell s prediction for the state of society
in 1984. Clearly, Orwell s prediction was wrong for the most part, however, his novel gave
society much to talk about. It did more than simply tell a fictional story of a man s life in the
midst of a dystopian society; it showed instances of clear signs of a dystopian society, which is
what scholars find so appealing about his work. Specifically, the attempt of the Party to completely
overhaul one language in favor of another was one of the topics that researchers are interested in
examining. The scholars who tend to find themselves arguing or, rather, discussing the role of
language in 1984 generally find that there s not much controversy between ideas, however, there is
diversity of ideas. The different scholars in my research all focuses on unique aspects of the same
ideas regarding the purpose of Newspeakand the effect it had on individuals in Oceania, and their
ideas seemed to fit together perfectly. One trend that appeals to scholars was that reducing language
technically changed what was classified as the truth. This relates to how reducing language has the
ability to change reality or destroy the past through changing the recollections of it; however, the
major trends that were focused on in this review was the language of Newspeak and the tolls it took
on individuals in Oceania since these were trends that were examined by the majority of the scholars

Essay On The Lawn Boy
The book Lawn Boy is written by Gary Paulsen and out of all his books that I have read, this one
is my favorite. The story takes place in the narrator s neighborhood in which he mows lawns and
starts his career in a very astonishing way.

The lawn boy never stated his name so i m just gonna call him lawn boy. The lawn boy was the
founder of his business which i will get into detail on the next paragraph. He is also the main
character. Arnold is the guy who helped the lawn boy build his business to riches in a pretty
awesome way. Those are the two main characters.

The lawn boy had recently turned 12 years old and his grandmother had given him a ride on mower
that was recently owned by his grandfather. Although it took him a few minutes to figure out how
to work this mower he later figured it out and he started to mow his very small lawn. After he was
done with his lawn, someone approached him and asked him if he would mow their lawn for $20.
That was when his business started. After he was done with mowing that lawn, several people
approached him and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After the brief discussion he agreed with arnold and they were on their way! They quickly began
and Arnold invested money into different things for him which turned out to be the best thing
that would ever happen to the lawn boy. As the days went on he had more and more lawns to
mow each day along with more and more money. After a couple days he had already worked up
over $1,000 and arnold decided it was time to invest in something very helpful and needed very
much. Workers. Arnold had invested in some of his cousins that needed work for the summer and
the day they were hired was the day when they all went to work. As the days went on arnold
invested the money into things that he didn t know about but as time passed more greater and
greater things happen as arnold invested in
Literature And Old English Literature
Throughout history, English Literature has evolved in many ways. It has changed from Old
English to Middle English. One big change is how we shared and communicated stories. Quite a
few other things that changed are the attitudes of fighters, and who heroes fought against. The
treatment of women differed from seeing women as possessions to seeing them as people. The
role of religion changed to have less of an influence. Plagues led to the end of the feudal system,
and king s absolute power was taken away. The mass production of books came after the end of the
plague. People started keeping records of time. Climate change created many issues with crops. All
of these changes caused extraordinary effects on the transition from Old... Show more content on

These aspects changed during the Middle English era. Fighters went from almost barbaric
attitudes to being chivalrous. Fighters also no longer fought for personal fame, and instead
fought for god, the king, honor, and women. With this attitude we saw many more knights in the
society. Similarly who heroes fought was also greatly changed from Old English to Middle
English. In Old English heroes would go into battles against monsters twice their size. Heroes
also fought against gods and other supernatural forces. They were seen as everyday people who
could take down and defeat these forces no man should be able to. The hero s tales soon changed
from these outrageous stories of fighting monsters to Arthurian legends. In the Arthurian legends,
heroes were the kings and knights who fought to protect their kingdom. Earthy stories were told
of the middle class to make them seem dirty and undesirable. Equally important is how in Old
English women were seen as objects to fulfill men s desires. Women were a Source of unpaid
labor, and offerings. The consideration of women as equals was not common. When making treaties
men of power would use attractive women as a pawn to ensure the favored outcome. Duchess
Eleanor of Aquitaine was one of the first to bring the unjust treatment of women to light. She
provided a strong figure for women to aspire to be. Eleanor s daughter, Marie of France, continued in

In 1976 George won his first batting title with a .333 average and in the same year led the Royals
to American League Championship Series, just one series away from the World series, but they
were eliminated by the Yankees. In less than 5 years Brett won his second batting title with a .390
on the season while carrying a .400 all the way until September 19th. In the same year Brett won
the American League MVP and led the Royals to the World Series where they were defeated by
the Philadelphia Phillies. Then a measly five years later Brett won his first and only World Series
ring against the St. Louis Cardinals in 7 games. Finally in 1990 Brett won his third and final batting
title with a .324 average and with this title Brett is the only baseball player to ever have three batting
titles in three different decades. In conclusion, George Brett harbors many accomplishments under

Personal Statement Of Purpose By Mr. Thomas H. Huxley
STATEMENT OF PURPOSE The known is finite, the unknown infinite; intellectually we stand on
an islet in the midst of an illimitable ocean of inexplicability. Our business in every generation is
to reclaim a little more land , these are the lines aptly said by Mr. Thomas H. Huxley. The
unyielding quest for boundless knowledge has been my motivating and driving force throughout
my career pursuit. It s the same quest that prompted me for higher studies. The dedication to
finding solutions and a thirst for creating new tools to benefit humanity has molded me into a
seeker of advanced knowledge. I commence this statement with a bit of my personality which has
a direct bearing on my academic pursuits. I have always felt a strong need for achievement, which
has been the motivating force behind whatever I have achieved in my academic career. My
consistently outstanding academic record ever since my school years has resulted in numerous
prizes and certificates of merit. My strengths have been my quantitative and analytical abilities
which instilled in me a special interest for mathematics and physics. I had always been intrigued
by science and used to spend a lot of time learning and knowing it. This fascination for science and
keen interest in the ever growing world of technology motivated me to take up engineering studies
for my undergraduate and graduate study. I have always been in awe of the organized complexity of
life s machinery which

Gus Belt. Mr. Belt converted his gas station and Shell s Chicken into a hamburger stand. The
restaurant opened its doors with several things in mind; first Belt s special focus was on customer
service and second he wanted the food he made to be fresh. Today, Steak n Shake continues to
focus on providing the customer the best dining experience, with freshly prepared foods. Their

Consumers unaware of the diner style atmosphere and quality food will not be willing to pay more
or wait longer for the dining experience. Steak n Shake may not be a restaurant appealing to the
health conscious consumer. One original single Steak burger with cheese has 33 grams of fat,
which is 51% of the daily allowance. A hand dipped regular vanilla milkshake consists of 664
calories and 35 grams of fat, which is 54% of the recommended daily allowance. Opportunities:
Currently, Steak n Shake has 445 restaurants in 20 states. By 2010 they estimate having over 1000
restaurants nationwide. The additional 550 restaurants will increase the brand recognition and
develop brand loyalty. In 2008, they are planning the addition of healthier menu items. Steak n
Shake hopes to capture the health conscience consumer that may not currently be a patron of the
restaurant. Steak n Shake s involvement in the community may generate additional revenues and
raise consumers awareness. They support local communities by sponsoring educational sporting
events and advertising in school yearbooks. Steak n Shake also donates gift certificates to non
profit events. Threats: Competitors like Denny s and Red Robin have always been considered
threats to Steak n Shake. Other competitors include Friendly s, Handel s Ice Cream, and the other

My Argumentative Research
Dear Tunxis Community College Humanities faculty, The last four months I had been enrolled in a
Composition II course which I have learned to write a strong argumentative research essay. The
content s in this folder are three examples of revised essays that I had wrote throughout the
semester. I will share with you all of my reflections and insights of each essayand what I have
learned in the whole process. The first essay that my Professor assigned was to be on the civil
rights. My topic of choice was music and its effect on the civil rights. This was an essay which I
first really struggled because I didn t know how to talk about such a topic in a way to really argue
my point. I started out by using the Gale database but I wasn t finding specific information that
would help solidify my essay. I turned to the library and picked up 33 Revolutions per Minute by
Dorian Lynskey, which provided information of all the different protest songs in the civil rights,
including jazz, a genre of music... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
My weak point in this essay was finding extremely specific sources of my topic. Because social
media is still a relatively new and growing tool, it was hard to find credible and research based
sources that could be used to argue my point of view. This made me have to find sources that
were current problems with social media and a few studies of its effects on students in the
classroom. I also have a lengthy introduction to the topic in which I use a personal anecdote as
well as information about what social media actually is. I include this information because I
believe the best way to argue something is by first defining what that thing that your arguing
actually is and why you are arguing it. This is my favorite essay because I believe it s a non
traditional research essay, but it still argues a very complex and relevant subject that is important to
young
