9. Find at least 6 elements a in the Hurwitz ring H such that K3 CO5 PO6

10. If A is a ring algebraic over a field F and A has no zero K2 CO3 PO1
divisors, prove that A is a division ring.

(Answer the following questions either (a) or (b))
11(a). Prove that the element a ∈ K is algebraic over F if and K2 CO4 PO8
only if F (a)|F is finite extension.

11(b). If Q = {α ∈ C : α is algebraic over Q}, prove that Q is K4 CO2 PO6
infinite algebraic extension.
12(a). Let F be a field of characteristic prime p and a ∈ F . If K2 CO4 PO8
f (x) = xp − a ∈ F [x], show that f (x) is irreducible over F
or f (x) splits in F .

12(b). Determine the splitting field and its basis over Q for K4 CO3 PO3
x4 − 2x2 − 2.
13(a). Determine the Galois group of the splitting field of K4 CO4 PO8
x4 − 14x2 + 9 over Q.

13(b). Prove that the nth -cyclotomic polynomial is irreducible over K3 CO4 PO6
Z.
14(a). Define irreducible polynomaial over a field. Prove or K2 CO3 PO2
disprove: x4 + 1 is reducible over F .
OR
14(b). Factor x8 − x into irreducibles in Z[x] and in Z2 [x]. K4 CO4 PO8
15(a). Define simple radical extension and solvable by radical K5 CO5 PO6
extension with separate examples. If F (x1 , . . . , x5 ) be the
field of rational functions in x1 , . . . , x5 over F . Prove or
disprove Gal(F (x1 , . . . , x5 )|F (a1 , . . . , a5 )) is solvable.

15(b). With usual notation, define Hurwitz ring of integral K6 CO4 PO3
quaterions. Prove that x ∈ H, then x∗ ∈ H, N (x) is a
positive integer for all x ∈ H and H is the subring of ring of
real quarterions.

(Answer the following questions either (a) or (b))

16(b). Prove the number e is transcendental number over Q. K3 CO4 PO6
17(a). Prove that any two splitting fields for a polynomial over a K4 CO4 PO6
field F are isomorphic.
OR
17(b). (i) If F is a field of characteristic prime, f (x) ∈ F [x] and K5 CO3 PO3
f ′ (x) = 0, prove that f (x) = g(xp ) for some g(x) ∈ F [x]. If
char(F ) = 0, what can you say about f (x)? Justify.
(ii) If F is a field of characteristic prime, then F is perfect if K5 CO3 PO3
and only if F p = F .
18(a). Construct the Galois extension K|F such that the Galois K2 CO5 PO8
group of K|F is isomorphic to Sn for all n ≥ 3.

18(b). Let K|F be the Galois extension and let E be the subfield of K2 CO3 PO1
K containing F . Prove that E|F is Galois extension if and
only if G(K, E) is a normal subgroup of G(K, F ) and
G(E, F ) = G(K, F )/G(K, E).
19(a). State and prove Wedderburn theorem. K6 CO4 PO6
OR
19(b). (i) Prove that, for every prime p and every positive integer K4 CO4 PO8
n, there exists a field having pm elements.
(ii) If the field F has pn elements, prove that the K4 CO4 PO8
automorphisms of F form a cyclic group of order n.
20(a). Suppose that the field F has all nth roots of unity. If a ̸= 0 is K3 CO5 PO3
in F and f (x) = xn − a ∈ F [x]. Prove that F (u) is the
splitting field of f (x) over F , F (u)|F is normal extension
and Gal(F (u)|F ) is abelian, where u is a root of f (x).
OR
20(b). Let D be a division ring algebraic over Q. Prove that D is K6 CO4 PO8
isomorphic to one of the field: R, C or the division ring of
real quaterions.
