6. COURSE DESCRIPTION (SYLLABUS):


AIMS : The objective of this course is to make the students understand the concept and evolution of quality and to
study the different quality tools. The course also covers the concept and techniques of statistical quality control. The
course also helps the students to understand about acceptance sampling, reliability and its application.

M odule I: Introduction to Quality:


Defining Quality, Quality as a Management Framework, Some important philosophies and their impact on quality
(Deming, Juran, Crossby), Quality cost, Quality losses, link between Quality and productivity

M odule II: Tools for Quality Control :


Basic tools of quality(the stem and leaf plot, histogram, box plot etc.), ISO 9000:2000, Six Sigma, Total quality
management ,introduction to total quality management, the evolution of total quality, Statistical methods for Quality
control and improvement.

M odule III: Statistical Process control:


Process capability analysis using histogram, Use and interpretation of Cp, Statistical Process Control, Specification &
Limits, Charts for variables & attributes, Process Control (X, R, P, C chart), Summary of Control Chart Construction,
Designing Control Charts.

M odule IV: Sampling Plan:


Design of single sampling plan. Double, multiple and sequential sampling plans, O.C. curve, Acceptance quality
Level, Lot tolerance percentage defective.

M odule V: Reliability
Reliability analysis and predictions, Bath-Tub Curve, Exponential and Weibull distribution in modelling reliability,
System reliability. ANOVA.

13. Attendance: Every student is expected to be regular (in attendance) in all lecture classes,
tutorials, labs, tests, quizzes, seminars etc and in fulfilling all tasks assigned to him / her.
Attendance will be recorded and 75% attendance is compulsory.

14. Makeup:

1. No make-up examination will be scheduled for the mid semester examination. However,
official permission to take a make-up examination will be given under exceptional circumstances
such as admission in a hospital due to illness / injury, calamity in the family at the time of
examination.
2. A student who misses a mid-semester examination because of extenuating circumstances
such as admission in a hospital due to illness / injury, calamity in the family may apply in writing
via an application form with supporting document(s) and medical certificate to the Dean of the
School for a make-up examination.
3. Applications should be made within five working days after the missed examination.

be discussed in the class room

17. Course Management System: SAP Portal is a software system designed to facilitate teachers in
the management (instructional content, assessment and documentation) of the courses for their
students, both teachers and students can monitor the system. Though usually considered as a tool
and often used to complement the face-to-face classroom.
