The Effect of pH and Temperature on the Efficiency of Catalase

Abstract: In order to determine how pH and temperature affect the liver enzyme catalase, an
experiment was conducted. Catalase breaks apart hydrogen peroxide producing water and oxygen.
Using an O2 sensor to measure how much additional oxygen is added into a sealed Nalgene bottle,
we could determine the enzymes effectiveness. Three variations of temperature were tested: cold,
hot and room temperature. This was done by taking test tubes with the three different samples and
placing them in a Nalgene Bottle. It was determined that the enzyme is most effective when at room
temperature although still functions when it is chilled. The heated sample was drastically less
effective. The pH was tested by adding acid (HCl), base () and neutral (water) to the enzyme. When
the enzyme samples were tested using the hydrogen peroxide and O2 sensor test it was determined
that any ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Its function is the speed up the decomposition of Hydrogen peroxide within cells. This is an
important function within living animals because it becomes a poisonous substance. Catalase breaks
apart hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen through enzyme substrate complexes. (Tully) The
shape of catalase is complex with various alpha helices and beta sheets. (Corsini) This shape is very
important to its function and variation in temperature and pH can denature the enzyme.

Hypothesis:
Part I: Testing the Effect of Heat If the enzyme temperature is decreased then it will not decompose
hydrogen peroxide because it normally functions at a higher body temperature.

Part II: Testing the Effect of pH If the enzyme pH is increased than it will not decompose because it
will be much more acidic than the more neutral environment it functions in.

Good And Evil Characters In The Disney Film Mulan
For my fairy tale I chose the Disney film Mulan. I chose Mulan because it is an entertaining movie
that delivers a good moral lesson. Mulan has your classic characters, the hero, the evil villain, but
Mulan also pays homage and respect to the sacred spirits of her people. In this paper I will discuss
Mulan s story of courage, prayer, and determination. I will cover some important symbolism,
imagery, and messages found within the film. I will also identify good and evilcharacters in the film
and their respective roles in the movie.

Mulan
The story of Mulan was inspired by an ancient Chinese ballad from the Song Dynasty, called the
Ballad of Mulan (ancientstandard.com). In the movie Mulan s homeland is being attacked by
The Huns. Everyone is here village is afraid and begins to gearing up for an imminent war. Every
family is required to provide a member from their respective families to help defend themselves
against the invading Huns. Mulan s father is the only male in her family and decides he must fight
and defend his village against their approaching enemy. The problem is he is old and has previous
war wounds that makes his chances of surviving such a war is unlikely. Recently rejected by her
matchmaker and potential husband Mulan decides to disguise herself as a male and represent her
family in her father s place. This decision leads Mulan on an uncertain and dangerous journey that
teaches her and the movie viewers many valuable lessons.

The Sacred
Before Mulan heads to war she prays to her deceased ancestors for protection on her journey. The
term used for praying to ancestors is called ancestor veneration (religionfacts.com). Prayers to
ancestors is based on the belief that family members who have died have an interest in present life.
These ancestors possess the ability to influence what happens in the lives of their family members
still on earth. Mulan and her family seek the guidance from their ancestors throughout the movie.
Mulan s ancestors grant her protection and a small dragon named Mushu who they communicate
with in regards to Mulan s best interest. Mulan reverenced the spirits of her ancestors in the same
way people reverence God, Allah, and other god like entities.

Martins Circumstance Analysis
This story honestly brought me to tears it was so emotional. I was so intrigued by the story that I
decided to even order the book. I m really surprised at the fact that Martin went years wanting to
communicate with everyone around him, but was unable to. Thankfully, Martin s caregiver saw he
had the motivation to learn and communicate. If it wouldn t have been for Virna, his caregiver to
knowledge martins capabilities to communicate through eye gaze, Martin ability would have gone
unrecognized. In a way, I can relate to Martins circumstance. I have a child who is unable to
communicate since he has microcephaly and cerebral palsy. I should say he has his unique way of
communicating simply by just crying and screaming. One thing that I m sure... Show more content

I can t even imagine how his parents must have felt hopeless and relentless because they couldn t
figure out what exactly was wrong with him. To add to all his troubles, he was misdiagnosed and
by what I read it seemed like everyone around him lost hope and just waited patiently for his
death. I couldn t even begin to imagine being under Martins circumstance. If I was to have been
walking on Martin shoes my first emotional state would have been anger. Anger towards the
doctors for misdiagnosing me and pretty much telling my parents there was no hope for
recuperation, and having a prognosis of zero, ensuring that my lifestyle with being deterring
those around me. Disappointed in my family for not noticing that fact that I had a way of
communicating. Who wouldn t be upset if they treated you like an animal and just drop you off
at a shelter to die? I m still trying to process this and so many questions run through my mind
about his illness. If I was diagnosed as being in a persistent vegetative state I would want to be kept

1) Interest in Position
Explain why you are interested in the RA position and what skills you possess that make you a good
candidate for the position.
My interest in a Resident Assistant position comes from my desire to help. I was born with a
very strong sense of empathy and if I see that a person is struggling I do all that I can do to
alleviate them. Whether it is a person with a learning disability who struggled in class to the
weirdo in high school who just wanted a friend, I ve been there for them. Nothing is more painful
to me than seeing a person being mistreated, under respected or neglected and I do all I can to
protect people from this. My goal is to make every person feel as if they have someone on their side,

By living my life intentionally, I hope that others will follow suit. 4) Community Development
What is the importance of community? Please talk about your experience with working with diverse
groups of people and how you interact with others that are different from you in a community setting.
Community is the difference between being and belonging. It is just too easy to just be a part of a
group, but to feel like you belong to the group is far more meaningful. You can go to the meetings
and know everyone s names but none of that means anything if you don t feel that you are a
significant component in a group. To be a part of a community means that you are a part of group
where inclusion, support and friendship are highly regarded. The beauty about community is that
everyone has their own gifts, talents, opinions and experiences to offer to it, therefore making each
member valuable. As a Resident Assistant, I intend to create an inclusive community in which each
person is accepted and encouraged regardless of race, gender, religion, sexual orientation or ability.
By promoting diversity in my community, I hope that everyone gains a sense of belonging. In my
community, I will have an open mind and tolerant attitude and will encourage my residents to do the
same. Because understanding that no two residents are the same, I will conduct myself through
equity. I will try to learn about my residents individually so if
Bulimia Nervosa Is An Eating Disorder
Bulimia nervosa is an eating disorder that consists of the distortion on one s body image and an
obsessive desire to lose weight. It involves binge eating which is the rapid ingesting of large
amounts of food, commonly followed by vomiting, fasting, or purging that is accompanied by
depression. An individual with bulimia will attempt to avoid weight gain by vomitingor using
laxatives, diuretics, or enemas. It is common to see a bulimic individual restrict their food intake
or exercise excessively. The collective notion of a bulimic is that their self worth and self
evaluation is strongly influenced by their weight or body shape. This disorder is not only mentally
damaging but also takes a physical toll on the body. The physical... Show more content on

bulimia but do not meet the criteria to be diagnosed. Apart from the common misconception that
only women develop eating disorders, it is reported that 10% of bulimics are males. I personally
never gave any thought to males suffering from an eating disorder. I have always perceived that
males with extra weight are more socially acceptable compared to women that carry extra weight,
and that commonly men don t view their image as defining to their value.
An interesting fact that I did not know is that 50% of individuals with an eating disorder abuse
drugs and alcohol. It s not shocking to me that bulimics would abuse drugs and alcohol, not only
because it can be used as an escape from the world and themselves, but also because numerous
drugs and alcohol effect appetite, usually in a negative way, aiding to weight loss. This disorder
really is a never ending cycle. First the body distortion image develops, then the binge eating occurs,
followed by guilt that leads to purging, vomiting, etc., which turns into depression that is commonly
coped with through drugs, alcohol, or food, which in turn starts the cycle over again.
Like most disorders, having a good family and friend support group is important to overcoming or
coping with bulimia. This became evident in this case study based off the fact that Amber felt unable

Statement of Purpose for Linfield College s Athletic...
I would like to become a certified athletic trainer through the Linfield program because of my love
for sports and medicine. I was involved in a number of sports throughout my life and have gone
through a number of injuries. There is one injury in particular that sparked my interest in athletic
training. I was playing soccer at Chemeketa Community College when I broke my foot. I spent many
hours with the athletic trainerthere Julie Speck (PT/ATC/R), who gave me the opportunity to work
with her in the training room. She also sparked another interest and that is to get my dual credentials
in athletic trainingand physical therapy. I see myself using both degrees in the future like my
mentor Julie Spark (PT/ATC/R). She works in a hospital as a physical therapist and is contracted
out to Chemeketa Community College as an athletic trainer. This is exactly what I plan to do with
both my degrees. As an athletic trainer there are many qualities you must possess. One, unique
qualities that I have is being naturally competitive. My competitive nature makes me want to be the
best at everything I m doing. It motivates me to try my hardest to accomplish my goals. Handle
stress is also an important quality that I possess. The training center can seem a stressful at times
with so many people coming in and out. I can not only handle this stress but thrive in this kind of
environment. I m a very sports oriented person and that s something I share with the athletes. I

Stock Car Racing Research Paper
Stock car racing has been around for a long time dating back into the 1900s. In the very beginning
race cars were not the safest cars out there. Some people lost their lives and many life changing
injuries were to follow. As the years passed the safety and speed increased in racing. After the
founding of NASCARthe sport evolved. Each principle in the sport had a chemistry related reason
to back the decision. The metal alloys and the densities combined with the property of each metal
plays a huge part. The added elements to the gasoline makes the cars not only faster but also more

Many of the bars and metals on the car are alloys of some sort. Alloys are mixtures of metals to
get certain properties needed that not only one metal can produce. Many metals need to be bent
at precise angles but still need to be extremely strong. Alloy combinations have changed
throughout the evolution of the sport. The text states One of the first widely used alloys was
bronze (copper and tin); followed by brass (copper and zinc). The benefits of an alloy over a pure
metal can include increased tensile strength, and shear strength ( harberger). The multiple
combinations show that as more alloys were discovered they utilized them if the provided any
advantage. Some of the first alloys used in the cars used copper as a main element in the mixture.
Mixing these elements gave the meatal the best of both worlds. It could increase more than one
type of strength when a pure metal was only good for one. As time evolved other elements such
as carbon got a key role in the alloys. The author states The body panels have a lower carbon steel,
which is lighter, while the chassis, which has to withstand great forces during the race and protect
the driver, is made of higher carbon steel that is designed to hold its shape while withstanding the g
force pressures (hartberger). The more carbon steel the more rigid and strong the alloy becomes.
The body must be light and flexible so it contains less carbon
Liberation Theology Essay
Arising out recent class discussion topics touching on the ideas of James Cone s ideas on Liberation
Theology and the relationship between the Cross and the Lynching Tree, our group decided to focus
the topic of our presentation around Liberation Theology. However, in order to create a counter
argument to stimulate further discourse, we introduced the Theologyof Prosperity, as an opposing
theological concept, to our presentation. Hence, we came up with the topic of Liberation Theology
vs. Theology of Prosperity.

Firstly, it was necessary to give the class a concise definition of these broad theories, and follow
these definitions with general background explanation on the idea behind the respective theologies.
The definitions that we ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This idea, however, is very unpopular among the church.
Although this information on Liberation Theology is essential to understanding of this concept,
the focus of our presentation, in relation to our class, was Black Liberation Theology. It is easy to
see how African Americans relate to the idea of Liberation Theology, as a historically socially
oppressed group of peoples. The encompassed theme of Black Liberation theologians is the concept
of God emancipating African Americans from white racism. Jesus in Liberation Theology is
commonly represented as a Poor Black Man , therefore allowing the representation of a relatable
figure for the African American people. One way in which we felt the concept of Liberation
Theology come together with class discussion, was in relation to the Black Liberation Theologian,
James Cone, whom we had previously discussed in class time, leading up to this presentation.

When it came to the Theology of Prosperity we discovered that it boiled down to this: those who
have money, health, and are essentially successful in every facet of life have been rewarded for
their faith in God. This theology predicts that those who are not successful in every aspect of their
lives, whether it be financially, martially, health, general well being, have not been completely
faithful to God. The Theology of Prosperity (Also referred to as Prosperity Gospel,
Battle Group Peiper Research Paper
With Peiper engaged in the north, von Manteuffel s 5th Panzerarmee brought good news to the
German army when they broke through the US 106th Division. The 5th army had forced 7,000
allied men to surrender the following day after breaking through. Down south, the 58th and 47th
Panzer Corps each made great progress to their goals of Hoffalize and Bastogne. The US First
Army HQ needed to be moved because the 6th Panzerarmee was only a few miles away. The 47th
Panzer Corps reached Bastogne on December 19, however, so did the Allied forces, the 101st
Airborne Division. Back north, the 30th Division was sent to reinforce the 99th division at
Stavelot. The two divisions were able to separate Battle Group Peiper from the rest of the German
army, with the help of air attacks, and they began to force them to retreat. By December 24, they had

The Importance Of The Normandy Invasion
June 6, 1944. The world has been at war for almost 5 years. The Axis Powers have occupied
France and a lot of Europe. The USSR is pushing the Germans out of Russia and back towards
Germany. The Allies are preparing to invade and take back Europe and defeat the Axis. The
invasion starts with a mix of British and American paratroopers being dropped behind enemy
lines to take important and over 100,00 soldiers are preparing to launch one of the largest sea
invasions of all time. The soldiers are a mix of British, Canadian, and United States origin. The 5

This was a very long stretch of beach near the Cherbourg peninsula, bordered by Utah Beach and
Gold Beach. The 1st and 29th American infantry divisions landed here on June 6, 1944 at
approximately 6.30 A.M. The landscape of the beach and surrounding area made it easy to
defend, but very difficult to attack. Facing the shore were large cliffs with multiple machine gun
emplacements and bunkers looking down towards it. Between the bunkers was barely any cover
for the soldiers. This brings up the question: Why did the Allies attack it? There are many reasons.
First, the Allies needed a way to link up Utah to Gold and the rest of the British sector. Utah was
needed for the capture of Cherbourg, and Gold was needed to put the Mulberry harbor in place. If
these did not get linked to each other, the soldiers on each front wouldn t be able to communicate
effectively. Second, the Allied needed to make sure the Germans couldn t regroup and counterattack.
A counterattack at that stage would be terrible for the Allies because they had not landed much
supplies yet and had sustained a lot of casualties. Taking Omaha would prevent this from happening.
Finally, Omaha covered the most land. This was essential for capturing the most possible towns,
cities, and communication hubs. In spite of all the difficulties, the Allies took the cliffs at around 10

Medical Malpractice Cases
Medical malpractice cases are notoriously complex, requiring an expert opinion on every phase of
your treatment. It may be difficult even to determine whether you have a valid case without the
assistance of doctors and an experienced malpractice attorney. Reynolds, Horne Survant, a law firm
with a 40 year history of helping Macon, GA, residents collect compensation for their injuries,
suggests speaking to a lawyer if you suspect you ve received substandard medical care.
No doctor, hospital, or health care worker is perfect, and even the most highly trained, conscientious
medical professional can make a mistake. However, the basis of a medical malpractice claim is not
whether a mistake was made but whether the care you received lived up to the established standard
for your condition. To make a claim, your malpractice attorney must demonstrate that reasonable
professionals in the same field would have acted differently and deviations from that standard
resulted in physical harm.

Amazon.com spends a substantial amount on Web advertising and marketing. The firm spent over
$340,000 for the first half of the 1996 and ranked 34th in Web ad spending. Since then, however,
these expenses have gone up significantly. Also, the firm invested much on their warehouse and
state of the art distribution center in New Castle, Delaware. Amazon.com turned its inventory
