Historical Perspectives On The Colonial Revival In...
Whatever is new, Is bad : Historical Perspectives on the Colonial Revival in Progressive Era America
The Colonial Revival is a phenomenon that materialized as a national expression of American culture
from the 1870s to the 1940s. Though founded on ideological traditions, it most often manifested
itself through decorative arts and architecture. Elements of revival furniture, arts and architecture
symbolically served as tools to promote democracy, patriotism most significantly in this context,
moral superiority, that reflect republican ideals. In many ways it is a direct response to the results of
Industrialization and progress. Historian Alan Axelrod contends, Colonialism is not a surface
phenomenon, a thin veneer over the real body of American life, but a network of communications
and linkages that reach deep into American experience and behavior. Historians examine the
movement from various perspectives; as a social and cultural movement, its representation in U.S.
material culture, and its significance to immigration and nationalism. Noteworthy scholarship
includes everything from Alan Axelrod s The Colonial Revival in America from 1985 to Briann G.
Greenfield s Out of the Attic: Antiques in Twentieth Century New England from 2009. Various
monographs and essays will be analyzed to determine correlations and points of dissent across the
historiography. The Colonial Revival has also been a prevalent area of examination in the museum
community as evidenced by
Should Prisoners Be Given The Right To Vote Essay example
Should prisoners be given the right to vote?
The UK has been accused of breaching the European Convention of Human Rights Article 3 of
protocol 1 by having a blanket ban on prisoners voting. The European Court of Human Rights
(ECHR) promotes the idea that convicted prisoners should be allowed to vote and have a right to
vote, despite the Conservative party being opposed to this view. As a result the ECHR have being
pressuring the Tory s to bow to their rules for many years. This essay will examine the history
behind the debate of prisoners voting and, give reasons in favour of the ban and opposing to the ban,
whilst strongly promoting the view that prisoners should not have the right to vote.
In 1870, under the Forfeiture Act, prisoners ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This shows that there is little argument against the disenfranchisement of prisoners as they are
prepared and encouraged to be a part of society.
People are incarcerated for different crimes some a lot more severe than others. For example, a
single parent was sentenced to 3 months for the theft of a pair of jeans worth £10 (BBC News,
2011). However, while these are viable points and questions, the government allowing certain
individuals in prisons to vote could be a complicated decision. Felons circumstances are not
simply black and white; there can be a grey area with individual cases. Appropriate retribution is
said to only occur when an appropriate punishment is given for the crime (Hegel, 1965). This
makes it difficult to judge who has committed a serious enough offence to enable them to be
stripped of their right to vote. Streeter said, the UK decided hundreds of years ago that prisoners
should not have the right to vote (Streeter, 2011). This is a settled view in this country which has
been accepted since 1870 (Hollobone, 2011). Do we want convicted murderers, rapists and
paedophiles to be given the vote? (BBC News, 2010). In terms of making the right decision and
having it morally and politically justifiable, felons should not be allowed to vote and it is
nonsensical to think they should.
This essay has given a brief history behind the debate of prisoners voting. It has examined and
shown both sides of the debate and
Social Justice In To Kill A Mockingbird
Social Justice, defined by the Oxford Dictionary, is Justice in terms of the distribution of wealth,
opportunities and privileges within a society. The human survival and the progression of society,
heavily relies on the ability to stand up for the rights and freedoms of others being an advocate for
change and an advocate for social justice. This essay with primarily discus Social Justicethrough
advocacy and younger generations perceptions of the world, focusing on the text To Kill A
Mockingbird by Harper Lee and the pocket film And So It Should Be by Tara Campbell. Overall,
exploring the the theme of how social justice is essential to humansurvival and the progression of
society.

The perception in the text To Kill A Mockingbird of hate being a natural emotion is constantly
challenged to provide the side of that hate is taught, rather than natural. The use of Lee s high
modality, use of a metaphor in the quote As you grow older, you ll see white men cheat black
men every day of your life, but let me tell you something and don t you forget it whenever a white
man does that to a black man, no matter who he is, how rich he is, or how fine a family he comes
from, that white man is trash , explores this notion. This quote breaks the stigma of that the majority,
in this particular text the white society, are always considered to be the higher class and able to get
away with whatever they please just because of their race being considered better than another.
Comparing The Ancient West Asian Athrahasis Epic And...
Archaeological findings of the Ancient West Asian Athrahasis epic and Sumerian flood story and
Gilgamesh epic which pre dates the Bible, parallels to the Genesis account of creation and flood
narratives. The main problem it poses is the findings of remarkable similarities between the parallels.
This has been interpreted variously by scholars, giving rise to two opposing positions: the minimalist
and the maximalist positions.
Against the backdrop of the existing parallel ancient writings, how do we understand the theology of
the Biblical accounts of Creation? This thesis will study the AWA/Egyptian myths parallel to the
Genesis Creation and Flood accounts so as to compare the understanding of God and the created
world between these two sources.
2. Chapter 1 Scholarly positions on the parallels between AWA/Egyptian and the Biblical creation
accounts
First there is the question of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Minimalists argue that Enuma elish is centered on the glorification and justification of marduk,
his victory over Tiamat and justification of his supremacy in the Babylonian pantheon whereas
Genesis account is centred on God s work of creation, the only marked parallelism lies in the
watery origin of the world and the separation of land and that these differences are too great to
consider any dependence. The analogy connection between Hebrew word tehom ( the deep Gen
1:2) and Babylonian word Tiamat (sea dragon goddess in Enuma Elish) is reportedly false and is
considered a matter of debate. Moreover, God s creative word in Genesis brought forth the universe
whereas marduk in Enuma Elish spoke to make sets of images appear and when he spoke again the
images disappeared, Neihaus points that the only thing that s common to both account is not the
creation of the world but the theological concept of creation by fiat . Johnston points out that there is
no hint of divine conflict between god and the primordial waters in Genesis

How Did The Developement Of The Germ Theory
The germ theory began when one scientist became motivated to disprove the theory of spontaneous
generation. This curiosity and motivation led to major changes in the health of humanity. This
theory helped the future generations while providing methods to prevent disease. The
developpement of the germ theory allowed other scientists to expand on this concept and develop
ways to apply information to care for individuals with disease and help in the modern world.
Microorganisms are miniscule, they easily invade humans, animals and other living hosts which then
lead to disease. Louis Pasteura french biologist conducted a variety of experiements, his individual
geniusness and technology helped the discovery of the germ theory which radically changed the
practice of medecine.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Louis Pasteur s discovery of the relationship between germ and disease was only the beginning to
developping a permanent solution. The theory led to the realization that handwashing helps prevent
the spread of disease and disinfection can eliminate germs. Disinfection and handwashing affected
humanity because the rates of infectious disease began to decline and epidemics lasted for a shorter
time spand and overall mortality decreased as a result. The introduction of the theory affected how
humanity viewed the human body. People began to believe that dirt contained microorganisms and
could cause an infection, which lead to bathing frequently. Alongside his discovery were his
inventions, for example the machine used to screen and detect silkworm eggs which saved the
European silk industry and helped prevent silkworm
Using Hydropower Help Stop Global Warming
Scientific Paper:
Using hydropower to help stop Global Warming

Thomas McBrien
Prof. Hussain
FCSC 101:W06

Global Warming is the gradual increase in the overall temperature of the earth s atmosphere
generally attributed to the greenhouse effect caused by increased levels of carbon dioxide and other
pollutants. These pollutants are produced by factories, cars, and even people and animals. Global
Warming is a major concern because it affects all life forms and is changing the earth entirely. As
the problem continues to grow, individuals must do their part to help prevent it. The biggest
pollutants in our atmosphere are Carbon dioxide, Methane, and nitrous oxide. Carbon dioxide is
released into the atmosphere by burning fossil fuels such as coal, natural gas and oil for energy.
Electricity production is the biggest cause of carbon emissions in the United States.
Transportation is the second biggest cause of emissions and factory production is the third
biggest cause. Humans and animals also play a small role in carbon emissions because we exhale
carbon dioxide. Transportation mainly consists of personal automobiles which is why the search
for a new way to power cars is so important. To help prevent carbon emissions many new cars use
electric to help produce less carbon emissions and reduce the burning of fossil fuels. These cars are
charged at home, but still require electricity made from power plants which are burning fossil fuels
and producing carbon emissions.
Neil Postman Amusing Ourselves To Death Analysis
Let s Play Peek A Boo
Today, when almost everyone carries a smartphone, information about everything is instantly right at
our fingertips. In today s society that may seem like a significant advantage over the past, however,
in Neil Postman s book, Amusing Ourselves to Death, he presents a different view. Written some
twenty years before widespread use of the internet, Postman builds a case for the liabilities of the
endless amounts of information. In the fifth chapter, The Peek A Boo World. He explores the impact
on the public discourse of two mid nineteenth century inventions, the telegraph, and the photograph.
The author views the telegraph changed the public discourse by making information and news
irrelevant, impotent and incoherent. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While Postman points out the literal meaning of photography is writing with light ; the two are
from completely different universes when it comes to public discourse (p. 71). Unlike typography,
photography cannot offer assertions, make propositions and offers no commentary. As long as it is
not an altered photograph, it has no choice but to be true (p. 73). Thus, the photograph is only able
to capture a moment in time and does not have the ability to comment on that moment. Our author
contends, where language presents the world as an idea, the photographs only option is to show
the world as an object (p. 72). Whereas in language, the correct context requires consideration of
what is said before and after, in photography there is no before and after, only the snapshot of time.
Therefore, by its very nature photography is context free (p. 73). As photography immersed itself in
the American culture author, Daniel Boorstin called this the graphic revolution. Postman is
unequivocal on the point that the traditional forms of information, news, and even reality itself
received an impairment by this new focus on images. For examples, he cites billboards, posters and
advertisements. He points to magazines Life, Look and several newspapers. The picture was the
focal point, and the writing was forced to take a less dominate roll and sometimes done away with
altogether (p.
The Characteristic Success In Outliers By Malcolm Gladwell
In the book Outliers, Malcolm Gladwell says extraordinary success is not about how hard a person
works, but it is really the hidden advantages and extraordinary opportunities and cultural legacies
(Gladwell 19). While a person s background and opportunities are important in a person s success, it
is not until a person chooses to take advantage of the opportunities they have been given can they
truly become successful. Many groups that Gladwell mentions in Outlierssuch as Ted Friedman, the
Beatles, and Robert Oppenheimer became achieved all their accomplishments because they took
advantage of the opportunities they were given.
[Ted Friedman was a Jewish litigator from New York. He succeeded because he took advantage
of the demographic luck presented to him.] Ted Friedman was able to go to one of the best
schools at that time, University of Michigan, because he happened to come along at a time in
America when if you were willing to work hard, you could take responsibility for yourself and put
yourself through school, (Gladwell 137). Even though Ted Friedman s family was poor during
the time he was trying to go to college, he did not just accept going to the free City College if he
would rather be at the University of Michigan. This inspired him to get a job to pay for college, and
he was able to since he was born during a demographic trough so many places were looking for
hardworking people like Ted Friedman. Ted Friedman could have just gone to the free college and
Panera Bread Case Study
Panera Bread Case Study

Strengths
Panera is a company with many strengths. Many of their strengths stem from their positive
interactions with their customers. Panera s first strength is their high level of customer loyalty and
satisfaction. They ranked in the highest categories in both compared to their competitors. This is a
distinctive competency that they hold, something that they do better than their rivals. Resulting from

Opportunities
Panera has many opportunities that they can exploit to increase their profits and market share in the
quick casual restaurant industry. Panera needs to continue expanding on their catering segment
which has shown to be a profitable expansion of the business. Panera also needs to expand into the
untapped metropolitan markets identified in Exhibit 3, and has an opportunity for continued
expansion within their current locations to reduce population per location numbers to become more
comparable with their rivals (Subway, McDonald s, Starbucks, Applebee s, etc.). Another
opportunity that Panera might be able to capitalize on is some kind of joint venture with other
companies to become the supplier of their high quality bread, such as higher end gourmet restaurants
that are not in direct competition with Panera. Finally Panera has an opportunity to expand their
location services to include Online Pre ordering, to reduce wait times in line, and home delivery
options.
Threats
Finally Panera faces some external threats to their company. First, rising gas prices threaten to
increase their costs due to the high level of daily transportation needed for their fresh dough
deliveries. Next, a bad/uncertain economy threats Panera. Consumers may find themselves seeing
more value in cheaper fast food options. Another threat is the extremely high level of competition in
the restaurant
Descriptive Essay About Old Man
The Old Man

Another day, a different date, I thought as I started another boring pattern that I have followed for
years. I am unsurprisingly, unmotivated to wake up another day of my life to just waste it waking
up early to go to Graden Elementary to sit in a class full of people for 8 hours a day, 5 days a week,
for 9 months at a time for 21 years! Why? Because knowledge is power! Luckily, it is only 2nd grade
, where basic math principles are taught along with fancy words, like chocolate, that you have to
memorize how to spell. Everybody passes 2nd grade. even if you fail every subject. , you would not
get held back until 3rd grade. I ended up failing an assignment, which was my first F, and I did not
care a bit. I walked around, casually smirking while I brag about how I got an F! It was the first
letter grade anyone has ever seen, so I was cool. To everyone s perspective when they are in 2nd
grade, school is merely a place to socialize. They do not realize exactly what grades are and how
they can and will affect their lives. The teachers ended up calling my parents, and right when I got
home, my mom said, Get in the CAR!
When the car came to a sudden halt, I read a sign that said Episcopal Community Service Soup
Kitchen. I was bewildered at how weird the structure looked. It was a massive gray concrete lump
sticking out of the ground, almost shaped like a dome, except it had an almost flat ceiling. The
inside was incredibly scorching, with all doors closed and the massive boiler iron pot in the
middle of the dome. When I walked in, I got slapped by the smell of a mixture of soup and
mildew. It was the most nauseating smell combination I have ever experienced. But, I did not
come here for soup, my mom said she wanted me to meet someone. She took me up to an old man.
He was wearing a jet black T Shirt with worn blue jeans. His face was surprisingly unwrinkled for
his age. We sat down, and my mom and the old man started talking. After a minute of them talking,
he glares at me and shook my hand with a really firm grip,. Hello Branden, your mother has talked a
lot about you. Awkwardness flooded over me, but neither him nor my mom seemed to notice I was
silent while they talked, trying to decipher what
