House Of The Scorpion Descriptive Language
In the beginning there were thirty six of them, thirty six droplets of life so tiny that Eduardo
could see them only under a microscope. He studied them anxiously in a darkened room. Can you
picture where they re doing this or what they re doing? This is a book about a 140 year old drug
lord who makes clones. That needs a lot of detail. The House of the Scorpion by Nancy Farmer
uses this a lot. It s important to paint a picture in someone s mind to introduce things. In The
House of the Scorpion, Nancy Farmer uses very detailed sentences to describe new scenes,
settings, and characters that we have to focus on. All throughout this story, Farmer uses
descriptive language to make her sentences more detailed to introduce the new scenes, settings,
and characters. Some examples of this in The House of the Scorpion are The room was dark
except for a faint, yellow light filtering through the bars of the window. (Farmer 29). In this
example, she uses faint, yellow light instead of just saying that there was a light on somewhere,
just barely lighting up the room. This allows readers to picture this room that he has to stay in
and they can see how he feels. He explains how he never sleeps alone and how the room s walls
are bare. Another example from the text is Hundreds of stars lay in a bright smear across a
velvety, black sky. It was the Milky Way... (Farmer 25). This example uses velvety, black sky .
That paints a better picture in the reader s mind by describing what the sky looked like, instead of
just saying that the sky was black. That quote introduces a setting that is calm and relaxing. A
velvety, black sky sounds so peaceful and beautiful, therefore, makes it relaxing. Both of these
quotes are good examples of how she uses descriptive language in the book to introduce a new
setting. To continue, another way she makes her sentences more detailed is by comparing things.
One way she does this is by comparing Matt and the other normal people to a mouse and hawks.
...You must stay hidden in the nest like a good little mouse. There re hawks out there that eat little
mice. (Farmer 5). What she is saying is that Matt, compared to the mouse, needs to stay in the house,
or the nest, because the other
Informative Speech About Gymnastics
Would you ever choose something that you love so much, but you know will impact the rest of
your life? Would you be willing to compromise your current lifestyle or what could happen in your
future? Those are choices that you are required to decide before entering any sport, but those
questions are most prevalent when wanting to join gymnastics. In my life I have faced tons of pros
and cons in result of this sport, but made this choice long ago. I chose to put timeand energy into
doing what I love and doing it whenever I can, but I also chose to compromise my growing and
all of the other opportunities that I occasionally miss. Today I will be covering how gymnastics
impacts your growth, this is due to genetic and environmental factors, your developmental stage,
and high impacts on your bones. The first reason your growth is impacted, is different genetic and
environmental factors. According to WebMD, growth is based on three important factors that
either help you grow faster, slower, or at a normal pace. These include stress (the feeling of
tension and nervousness), exercise, and nutrition (obtaining the food needed to grow). Stress is
proven to stunt growth if it is over a long period of time, and doing competitive gymnastics for a
long time can cause this stress. Exercise, is another cause for stunted growth because of
overdeveloped muscles, promote damaged ligaments and muscles. Nutrition is the final
environmental factor that causes this. Accordingly, when you don t gain all of your proper nutrients
or you burn through them too fast, your body doesn t have all of the nutrients needed to grow. As
you are growing up if you are constantly doing gymnastics, your body learns to cope with all of the
forces that are put onto it. The combination of those factors combined, may set your boneage back
two years. For example, since I am 14 my bone age is actually 12. The second reason, is that your
developmental stage is also affected. Also according to WebMD, your developmental stage can be
affected in consequence of over practicing can lower your hormonelevels. This is what sets back
your growth spurts. If you don t quit gymnastics with enough time to continue developing, you may
never have a proper growth
Philosophy And The Modern Philosophy
Upon talking about the history of modern philosophy, one of the most important philosophers, who
is considered as the father of the philosophy in this period, is Descartes. He was a pioneer for the
movement of the new trend of philosophy and became a break between the medieval philosophy and
the modern philosophy. Being educated in the environment of medieval philosophy, specifically in
the school of Jesuits, Descartes received the system of scholastic philosophy as his foundation for
making a new start into the history of philosophy. In his life, Descartes tried to establish a system
of philosophy which was suitable to the development of society and science. To do that, he did not
collapse pre philosophical systems, but somehow he ignored their values. In his Meditations he
says Once in my life I had to raze everything to the ground and begin again from the original
foundations, if I wanted to establish anything firm and lasting in the sciences. Therefore, he just
could begin a new system of philosophy which, he thought, would be a certain and firm foundation
to get knowledge. However, to build up the principles for this foundation, Descartes had to use the
concept of Godin his arguments. The existenceof God became an important means for the
construction of his new philosophical system. Hence, I will emphasize on the importance of God in
this paper by discovering the role of God as a means in Descartes main points of reasoning,
particularly God with the method of
Ethical Issues In Training Day
In 2001, Training Day, a police drama film speaks on the issues of lacking integrity,
professionalism, ethics, and misconduct that heavily violate the police department s policy. This
film was constructed on the basis of a scandal that occurred in the Los Angeles Police Department.
In this film, veteran officer Alonzo Harris trains Jake Hoyt a young rookie that is on his first
training dayfor potentially joining the narcotics unit. Throughout the film, Harris tests Hoyt by
telling him to perform acts of misconduct that breach the department s policy. Hoyt is a young
officer who is fresh out of the academy expecting to use everything that he was taught in his job
duties. Hoyt s character is illustrated as having integrity, remaining truthful,... Show more content on

When one endures negative confrontations with the police, it is quite difficult to get rid of the
belief that police officers are corrupt. One negative experience often tampers one s judgement.
This is seen as a detrimental factor when trying to reconstruct pro social relationships with the
police. On September 20, 2017, probation officer Oscar Calderon from L.A. county was found
guilty for assaulting female minors in juvenile hall. Calderon was arrested in January and charged
with four counts of assault under color of authority and two counts of lewd and lascivious acts with
a child. Prosecutors said that the victims ranged in age from 15 to 18 and that the abuse began in
2014 (Queally, 2017). Calderon held a supervisory position in the department using it to his own
convenience to get the females to comply to having sex with him. It was noted that other supervisors
at Camp Scudder ignored the accusations from the young females, allowing the abuse to continue.
The results of this case concluded in a pending lawsuit against the county for the probation staff that
were informed by the victims of the assault yet remained silent allowing the abuse to continue.
Calderon was dismissed from the county and is no
The Pros And Cons Of Endangered Elephants
Trump s lift on the ban of endangered elephant trophy imports into the U.S. is just another prime
example of how politics and money take precedence over precious life and the environment.
Fortunately, the new policy that Trump is considering is on hold. According to Tanya Sernerib,
Center for Biological Diversity Attorney, we are in the midst of a poaching crisis. Elephant
populations across Africaare declining , she said in an interview with WCCO CBS Minnesota in
November 2017. It was reported in that same broadcast that the elephant population on the African
continent declined by 30% between 2007 and 2014 based on a report released by the Great Elephant
Census Organization in 2016. If the ban is not lifted, those interested in sports... Show more content

Certainly, elephant trophies pose an environmental issue because elephants provide many benefits
to the environment. Two brief examples are making grasslands and water holes. Political
Ecologists will probably find that those who could afford to lobby politically in favor of the
elephant trophy U.S. import ban care more about money than the environment, and those who care
more about the environment, such as animal rights groups and conservation organizations, that are
in objection to the ban, might face a huge disadvantage for lack of sufficient political power. 1.5
million acres of federal land was set aside by the Obama administration in December 2016 which
deemed the Bear Ears regions as a National Monument protected by the antiquities act. There was
great outrage and celebration over this decision. In fact, according to a pole, 60% of Utah citizens
were in favor of the monument according to Luekart. However, in 2017, the Trump administration
restored land rights back to Utah citizens of 1.3 million acres of that land. The other national
monument reduction regards the Grand Staircase Escalante Monument, which was approximately 2

Copyright Laws And How They Have Affected Society. Copyright
Copyright Laws and How They Have Affected Society
Copyright laws have been in place for over two hundred years. They are meant to protect from the
unauthorized and unlawful use of ideas and media under law, and protect the artist s integrity. The
types of media protected ranges from books to movies, from TV to picture art. In it s own way,
copyright laws have affected society and how media is distributed across the world.
Copyright Laws
The current copyright laws we use have been in place since 1976, when the Copyright act was put
in place. (Copyright law, 2017) This act was meant to reform the copyright laws into a easier to
understand format, and a easier use by people. The laws protect ideas and media from unauthorized

After it is registered, your copyright claim is valid for seventy years after you die, unless your work
was created by a company or corporation, to which it remains after ninety years. (Ravgiala, 2017)
Copyright of Movies, Films and Television
All audiovisual works are protected under section 101 of the US copyright code. This prevents
the copying, distribution of, or plagiarism of copyrighted visual works. Most of these
infringements occurs when someone sneaks some kind of recording device into a theater and
records it there. Then they either put it up on the internet for free, or sell it for a cheaper price
than you would get a ticket at the movies. Movies are, however, protected under the fair use law.
Section 107 allows audiovisual works to be used in a non commercial environment, such as a
educational institution. For instance, if a teacher wants to show a movie about volcanos to his
class, he can, as long as the movie was lawfully obtained by the teacher or the school
administration. (Cameron, 2017) These rules all relatively apply to television as well. The thieves
record the airing of a show, and then post it somewhere on the internet. The thieves have also been
known to transcribe the script of a show as it airs, and then post this script on the internet. Most of
these are intentional infringement and can cost you a lot of money in the future for stealing any
monetary gain from
Reliving the Columbine Shooting
BOOM glass goes flying in the parking lot in every direction, at 11:19 AM the first bomb is
detonated and is also heard within the halls of Columbine. The adrenaline in Dylan Klebold and
Eric Harris s vein begins but so does the nightmare.
It s April 20, 1999 an ordinary Tuesday morning at columbine high school. In about two weeks
approximately 300 seniors will be graduating and perhaps attending college. For many students this
means that they will be moving to a different chapter in their lives, and the beginning of a new life
and life journey however for many students these goals won t be accomplished. On this particular
Tuesday morning several students lives will unfortunately end in tragedy. Students today will head
about their day as usual but two seniors, Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris will be very vengeful and
will not allow anything to get in their path.
Their highly anticipated nightmare to which they refer to as a dream will come to a reality and
end with the lives of 12 students and 1 teacher. How far will two bullied teenagers seeking for
revenge go? Well just enough to end their own lives.
As the first lunch period begins students rush in, the lunchroom will be seating about 500 students
and also those who will decide to eat outside since columbine has open campus lunch. Many
students will also head to different classrooms to get work done or study, such ideal place like the
library, where most of the fatalities took place. While everyone is busy taking tests
How To Help People In Appalachian Culture
Researcher have spent time trying to develop ways to help people in the Appalachian area to be
able to get careers and help themselves. People from the Appalachian area are more likely to seek
help from their churches or their families, before getting help from a stranger. The reason that
people are unwilling to get help from strangers is because, of the way that the culture is in the
Appalachian area. People who grew up in this area have strong ties in their churches and their
communities. They are really close with their family and their family is going to come before
anything else. People from this area are going to work for what the family needrather than what they
are interested in. They are also more likely to distrust outsiders. They are not going to wantto go
work for a company when the owner is not from this area, and wants the workers to what they are
used to doing in a different way. With the way that people in the Appalachian area this can cause
some problems for career development. There is limited time for exposure to different career
options. Especially, being raised in an area that you end up working the same job as your father
worked. Also a person may leave school if a family need arises.... Show more content on

Popular Solo Piano Pieces Of The Classical Era
Halle Fields
Professor Swanson
Understanding Music
21 October 2015
Popular Solo Piano Pieces Any intermediate pianist will recognize that there are popular solo pieces
that they, along with almost every other pianist, will perform at some point during their career. This
theme, entitled Popular Solo Piano Pieces , encompasses a collection of ten piano solos that are
performed by many developing pianists. While these pieces are popular among musicians today, it
can be noted that the majority of these pieces are popular among the general public and can be found
in movies, television, and many other varieties of mainstream media. Among these pieces it is
apparent that the development of sonata form during the Classical Era was revolutionary to the
writing of music and there is a trend that in the majority of these popular solo piano pieces follow
sonata form.
Beethoven s Pathétique Sonata op. 13 no. 8 in c minor. First movement: Grave https:/
/www.youtube.com/watch?v=i60LrIq3cr8 Beethoven, being a bridge between the Classical and
Romantic eras, wrote many pieces influenced by both times. The Pathétique Sonata also follows a
typical sonata form with 3 movements, the first movement being the most popular to be performed
as a solo. The first movement, Grave, also follows sonata form with an introductory theme before
introducing three main themes in c minor, e flat minor, and E flat Major, respectively. The
development contains variations on all three themes and the introduction
Nathaniel Hawthorne s Accomplishments
Nathaniel Hawthorne was one of the most inspiring and prominent authors of American Literature.
There were over 100 pieces published by Hawthorne consisting of short stories, children s stories,
novels, nonfiction pieces, and sketches. (hawthorneinsalem.org). His most famous works include
The Scarlet Letter and The House of the Seven Gables. Hawthorne s career and path of life
influenced the types of work he published. He was a descendant of early Puritan settlers a heritage
that would haunt him and inform his writingall his life (Hawthorne Forward). Although he had a
slow and asperous start to his literary career, he still accomplished a lot of things and now inspires
many authors today.

(nps.gov). It is a story about the terrible impact a single, passionate act has on the lives of three
members of the community: the defiant Hester Prynne; the fiery, tortured Reverend Dimmesdale;
and the obsessed, vengeful Chillingworth. (Hawthorne Back Cover). Hester was accused of
committed adultery with Chillingworth, which resulted in the birth of Pearl. The consequence for
the sin Hester committed was she had to wear the letter A across her chest in order for everyone to
know that she committed adultery. The Scarlet Letter is said to be the first truly American novel,
which was primarily written because of the feelings he was having during that time of his life. This
started the period of apex for Hawthorne. After the Scarlet Letter was written, Hawthorne began to
have more publicity and understand how the literary profession truly worked. Over the next few
years, he published novels such as The House of the Seven Gables and The Blithedale Romance. In
just three years, he wrote three of his most famous novels that are still read
Effects Of The Monroe Doctrine
The Monroe Doctrine was established by U.S. president James Monroe and the U.S. secretary of
state John Quincy Adams. Their plan of the Monroe Doctrine represented a solid line where the
Americans will no longer tolerate interference from European powers in any way shape or form. For
the most part, America was minding its own business until Imperialism started booming in the late
1800 s. Latin Americawas less developed and America saw South and Central America as perfect
candidates to extract resources and sell U.S. goods. The culture of capitalism was on the rise. The
start of Manifest Destinybegan to construct U.S. foreign policy which led to America reaching
towards the Caribbean and Latin America to expand.
Firstly, If God and mission was the road to Manifest Destiny, Imperialism was the light that shined
bright to lead the way (Lubragge). America started off by investing in businesses and land all
around Latin America. Imperialism led to the U.S. taking over the Philippines, Guam, and Puerto
Rico via the Spanish American War (Lubragge). America was under the impression they were
safeguarding the world from Spanish oppression and began sculpting expansionist policies. The
Spanish American War put an end to Spain s colonial empire in the region and gave the United States
complete control of the Pacific. The U.S. victory led to a peace treaty between the U.S. and Spain,
which gave all claims of Cuba to the United States, while ceding sovereignty over Guam, Puerto
