Australian Boomerangs (40 min)
Clean Up Wrap Up (10 min)
Make a working boomerang out of folded paper and decorate it in the dot style of early Aboriginal
art.

Either walk through the steps together or have students collaborate in groups. Make sure to test out
the boomerangs before painting!

Tip: The boomerangs fly best when pinched by two fingers in the middle and flicked with the
creased edge forward.

To paint the boomerangs, use the wooden end of the paintbrush to create an Aboriginal esk dot
pattern in green and black.

CLEAN UP AND WRAP UP (whole group discussion)

Rinse out brushes and paint palettes and lead a short wrap up discussion:
What was it like painting in dots?
Did you design an abstract pattern, form a recognizable shape or tell a story?
How is the boomerang able to fly back? (Because of their special curved shape, the two wings of the
boomerang spin and create unbalanced aerodynamic forces. This disproportionate lift on the
boomerang causes its flight path to form an egg shape, returning it to the thrower. Also, see the
STEM extension to go deeper into this question.)

ART EXTENSIONS

Practice the traditional dot style of boomerang art and make the shape of an animal on the
boomerang.

To make a more sturdy boomerang, make one out of cardboard or experiment with different
boomerang shapes. You will need scissors, cardboard, a pencil and a ruler.

Current Issues Course Essay
I am writing this essay in application for the Current Issues course. I believe that this course will
help me gain valuable skills that will help me in college. Current Issues is also a topic that interests
me a lot as it is something that isn t really touched on in high school and it is something that I would
like to deepen both my knowledge and understanding in.

I would like to participate in this class because it would give me the opportunity to experience a
college campus as well as learn valuable skills to help prepare me for college. I am very interested
in this course because I would be able to broaden my point of view on current affairs and gain more
knowledge on them. This course is something I would fully commit to by taking out the time to
make sure I thoroughly understand the material and by completing ... Show more content on

I would also like this oppurtunity in order to earn a transferable college credit. In school we cover
current topics very briefly and I think this class would be a good way to really dive in and learn
more about social and political issues. I would also like to be given this opportunity because I
would be able to participate in discussions and activities where I can improve my argumentative
skills which is valuable skill that I believe is needed in college.

I think current issues is a very important topic because it affects my life greatly. Seeing as I am
part of the next generation and this world is something me along with my peers will inherit. I
believe it is my responsibility to educate myself on current issues and expose myself to the point of
views of others. Also many social and political issues directly affect my life as well as many others.
One example is police brutality, it
The At The Last Model United Nations Conference
At the last Model United Nations conference we attended, I had the opportunity to sit down for
coffee with an advisor from one of the local public high schools. This particular advisor and I have
forged a strong connection in several years of chaperoning events together for our learners. He is
versed in Attic philosophy and how we approach learning. Throughout the course of our friendship
we have periodically emailed each other articles on education, learner preparedness for career and
college, and public versus private education. All of this back and forth has led to an incredibly rich
dialogue about learning.

Our most recent conversation had us revisiting a September 2015 article from the Washington Post
(linked below) that I had ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the rush to cover everything that might be tested, teachers and students miss the chance to create
and explore.
A new definition of success Almost from birth, our kids absorb society s image of success. And it s
a narrow one: score the highest, run the fastest, get into the most prestigious college, and get on
your way to a high income career and a high status life. Too many young people mortgage their
childhoods to get there, fearing anything less will be failure.
We spent several minutes going back and forth about how these concepts can be incorporated into
various communities and what possible results might by seen. My public school counterpart,
knowing that the Attic embraces and employs many of the above mentioned six components, posed
the following question to me. He asked, Because your program implements these principles that look
so different from the norm and are largely untested or unused in mainstream American education,
what are the actual learning outcomes for your students?

First, I responded that while our core values and philosophy might be new to many people, the Attic
has been practicing them continually for 18 years. In that time, hundreds of children have passed
through our doors. In many more traditional educational settings, children often spend the bulk of
their time either doing work that is little more than teaching to a test or flying through curriculum
that they do not understand for the sake of meeting
Black Diamonds Research Paper
There is nothing like the feeling of rushing down the slopes with the wind blowing by and the sun
shining down, as the landscape of the mountains outstretches before you. While traversing the frigid
ridge can be an exhilarating refuge from the routine of normal life, there are certain things that must
be known about the difficulty of the slopes. It is better to focus on the splendor of it all rather than
worry about making it down safely. To make slopes easier to identify, they are categorized by colors
and shapes that correspond with the difficulty of the terrain. American identifications group terrain
into four classes; greencircles, blue squares, black diamonds, and double black diamonds.

Green circles are gentle beginner level slopes. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These vary greatly in terrain and obstacles and can be found in many places. They tend to be on
the back side of the mountain, but getting to them is where it really varies. You may take an old
hidden ski lift, or come off a main lift to hike up a steep incline to get to the riskiest slopes. Black
diamonds are not for beginners, as they are almost always steep and quite narrow. You will find
obstacles on these, whether it be rocks or bumps, sharp turns, or through trees. Tree runs could be
a category of their own. The trees could be closely knit, or sparsely placed. It may be a narrow
singular path, or might be untouched completely. It s important to take turns if you re going with
a group of people, which is a smart choice to make sure you won t get lost on your own. This is
because it s quite easy to fall or get stuck, so you may need help. While all of these are great, my
favorite run is a drop off. This is a vertical drop about five feet down, followed by a steep, powdery,
challenging run. These are ones that you almost always have to hike to, and the most dangerous slope
requires a hike up a very steep incline. These are the only slopes I haven t been on, and are
extremely steep, narrow, one person at a time runs. Black diamonds are not meant for beginners, and
you should not go on them unless you know how to traverse something like
Themes Of All Quiet On The Western Front
All Quiet On The Western Front written by Erich Maria Remarque is a wonderful tale that
expresses the theme of comradeship, dehumanizing effects of war, and the futility of war. All 296
pages are full of twists and turns, lessons to learn, and all the brutality of war. This anti war book
opens your eyes to situations you ve never thought about. It shines a new light on battle that has
never been documented before. All Quiet on the Western Frontis a coming of age book that teaches
you many valuable things.

Remarque s All Quiet On The Western Front had many great lessons, one of the greatest ones was
the theme of comradeship. During his time on the front, Paul and his buddies formed a bond with
each other that could not be broken. This is clear when Paul states that they are the strongest, most
comforting thing there is anywhere: they are the voices of my comrades. (Remarque 212) In this
line, Paul expresses his compassion and respect, he has for his comrades. Paul s thought process
encourages the idea that his friends help him get through each day, That during his hardest times, his
friends voices help him push through it. When Paul was going through an internal battle, his
comrades talked to him and helped him work it out. For example, when Paul finally lets his
frustrations out to his friends he listens to them and feels comforted, reassured by their presence.
(Remarque, 228) The theme of comradeship is being able to forge connections with other soldiers.
The Importance Of Gun Safety Issues
The first article is about how, in 2016, Virginia s Democratic governor and Virginian Republicans
compromised on gun safety. This issue impacts Virginia as it allows citizens from states with less
strict concealed gun carry laws to carry their guns in Virginia, which potentially could cause safety
issues. Nonetheless, it also allows state police to conduct background checks in gun shows and
restricts people who have committed domestic abuse from buying weapons, which, in total, makes
the state safer. The parties involved in this compromise are Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe and
Speaker William J. Howell, however, in the article, House Leader David Toscano and the Coalition to
Stop Gun Violence also comment on the compromise. An important
Rondinone s Seven Magic Mountains
Artist, Ugo Rondinone, in his art, Seven Magic Mountains, comprised of seven towers of colorful,
stacked boulders standing more than thirty feet high. Rondinone purpose is to convey the idea that,
Seven Magic Mountains elicits continuities and solidarities between human and nature, artificial and
natural, then and now, states Rondinone. He creates a sense of romantic minimalism. Across the
desert south of Las Vegas, Nevada, elevates a sizably voluminous, colorful anomaly. Seven colossal
stone forms defy gravity with their teetering formations. The shapes, reminiscent of naturally
occurring hoodoos, seem poised between monumentality and collapse. The mammoth contemporary

The designations and forms of his paintings and sculptures have frequently evoked primordial
phenomena such as air, moons, the sun, and the cosmos. Referring concurrently to the natural world,
romanticism, and existentialism, Seven Magic Mountains encapsulates a marginally noetic trinity
that has underpinned the artist s work for more than two decades. In an incipient iteration of themes
and materials, Seven Magic Mountains engenders a sense of romantic minimalism. Seven Magic
Mountains elicits continuities and solidarities between human and nature, artificial and natural, then

Jean Tinguely and Michael Heizer engendered consequential sculptures, Seven Magic Mountains is
one of the most astronomically immense land predicated art installations in the Cumulated States
consummated in over 40 years. The work pays homage to the history of Land Art while additionally
offering a contemporary critique of the simulacra in nearby Las
Chinese Exclusion Act Of 1882
The 1848 Gold Rush fueled American prosperity in California, causing the impoverished Chinese to
seek employment opportunities in the United States. Americans, however, did not welcome them.
During the Panic of 1873, after the Gold Rush ended, competition for jobs became fierce. The jobs
were mostly given to Americans. Out of desperation, the Chinese workers agreed to work for less
salary than their American counterparts. Consequently, union workers rose up for their rightful jobs.
With pressure from unions and anti Chinese organizations, Congress passed the Chinese Exclusion
Act of 1882, which banned Chinese immigrants from entering the country for decades. The Act
stated that any Chinese immigrant found unlawfully in the country... Show more content on

The prospect of forging a new path and life in America outweighed the small price of the tax.
Immigrants coming to Canada could remain there without paying the head tax if they left within
ninety days. While the Act was enforced, the number of Chinese immigrants entering Canada and
later into the United States increased. To the south, the Mexican border was also penetrable. The
Mexican border was too long, and with the absence of large towns, even the newly created China
Division in the Immigrations Service was unable to patrol the area. Either the Chinese disguised
themselves as Mexicans to cross the border, or they saved up money in Mexico and later smuggled
their way into the United States. The Chinese Six Companies (the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent
Association of San Francisco) was instrumental in helping to set up a network of trade for Chinese
Immigrants to gain transportation and get across the borders. In total, about 17,000 Chinese
immigrants entered the United States through Canada and Mexico from 1882 to 1920. Chinese
immigrants entered the country from Seattle, Buffalo, San Diego, San Antonio, and El Paso, as well
as other openings along the borders of the United States. The government simply could not protect
their borders from crafty immigrants. Secretary of Labor, James David, acknowledged this point
when he said, If we had the whole army guarding the Mexico and Canadian waterfront, we could not
stop this invasion by infiltration. The
Ascorbic Iodine Experiment
Two beakers were labeled ascorbic acid (C6H8O6) and iodine (I2). About 75.0 mL of standard
ascorbic acid solution was measured in a graduated cylinder. It was then placed in the beaker
labeled ascorbic solution. About 100.0 mL of iodine solution was measured using a graduated
cylinder. The measured solution was then placed in the beaker labeled iodine. From the iodine
previously gathered, about 55.0 mL was measured and placed into the burette. All of the solution
did not fit into the burette. The burette was filled until the iodine solution was at the 0.0 mL mark.
A table chart was created to record all the data collected during the experiment. The first data table
was labeled standardized data. Only one column was needed. It was labeled run one. The rows on
the table were labeled final burette volume, initial burette volume, mL of iodine solution, mg of
ascorbic acidin solution, and mg ascorbic acidin solution over mL of iodine solution. This data
chart was used throughout the experiment. After the table was created, the initial burette volume
was recorded as 0.21 mL. A 125 mL flask was then filled with 25.0 mL of the ascorbic acid
solution from the beaker labeled ascorbic acid. 10 drops of 1% starch indicator was added to the
ascorbic acid inside the flask. The two solutions were then mixed together by swirling the flask. The
solution within the flask was a clear liquid. The flask was placed under the burette containing the
iodine solution. Small amounts of the
