In the book Shadow of the Banyan, it follows the main characters of the story through the

force Cambodian people from their homes and out of their towns and tells them to leave because
Americans are going to bomb. In the book this happens to the main character Rammi and her

in the kroma around his waist. When he caught sight of the stupa and the surroundings cheddys,
he let out another despairing sob. Poor man mr. virlak said, shaking his head. His wife suffered
an asthma attack and died on the journey. (P.G 89,90).More and more death is entering Rammis
life and she cannot escape it as it slowly becomes a permanent fear of death and loss of loved
ones. This develops her as a character because she witnessed others and their losses quite
frequently. For example it says in chapter 12 (P.G 123) It happened in half a breath. One moment
he was alive and the next still, his silhouette faint on the straw mat, more like an incomplete
thought a tracery, than an actual person. It seemed no one expected him to die. It was just fever,
everyone said. He should ve gotten over it. But i d known since that day Mr. virak arrived at the

the baby was not ready for death and that it was too soon. This shows the character development
from the beginning of the story by making Rammi less sensitive to death . As they book continues

Analysis Of The Companies Act 2006
The Government also got heavily involved and in this period and managed to pass 7 companies
acts in a relatively short period of time. Although it was almost two decades before another
Companies Act got passed. This act was the Companies Act 2006, which plays a large role in the
UKs accounting activities today. According to the Companies Act 2006, accounting standards are:
...statements of standard accounting practice issued by such body as may be prescribed by
regulations. (Companies Act, 2006) In accordance with the Companies Act 2006 There are no
specific legal or statutory requirements dealing with the sole trader and partnership accounts in the

However, non publically traded companies in the UK can choose between the UK Accounting
Standards and the Companies Act 2006; or just the IAS on its own. Another piece of legislation is
the Sarbanes Oxley Act (SOX). The purpose of this act is to protect investors from fraudulent
accounting activities by corporations (Investopedia, 2017). In response to the poor financial
practices of the 60s, The Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) founded
the Accounting Standards Steering Committee (ASSC) in 1970. Later that decade, it was renamed
the Accounting Standards Committee (ASC). The ASC went on for another 14 years before it was
replaced by the Accounting Standards Board (ASB). The main purpose of the ASB is to develop and
issue accounting standards and principles; to address urgent accounting issues and to work in unison
with other accounting institutions. The ASB operates under the Financial Reporting Council (FRC)
which is a private limited company, and the standards issued by the ASB are called Financial
Reporting Standards (FRSs). In the early 70s, the International Accounting Standards Committee
(IASC) was born. The priority of the IASC was to improve comparability of financial statements on
an international level. It then changed its name to the International Accounting Standards Board
(IASB). The main aim of the IASB is not too dissimilar from the IASC ... to develop a single set of

The Hundred Days Offensive In World War One
World War One began in 1917 when Archduke Ferdinand was assassinated.
During the war, there were the Allies and Central powers along with the many battles included. The
Allied countries such as Great Britain, France, Russia, Italy, United States and Canada were
opposing the Central Powers which were Germany, Austria Hungary,
Ottoman Empire and Bulgaria. The Hundred Days Offensive was a series of battles that led to the
ending of the first world war. It led to a serious advantage to victory in World War One.
Among the hundred days were many victories for the allied powers.
Generalissimo Ferdinand Foch took advantage of the disorganization of the German army and
ordered a counter offensive. Following the counteroffensive was the Second
Battle of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After this, Foch started plotting some amazing plans for attacks in order to defeat Germany. On
September 26th, the American Army attacked in the MeuseArgonne following by the British First
and Third armies the next day that attacked eastwards towards Cambrai. Following that was an
attack in Flanders and the grand finale, the attack on the Hindenburg Line. These attacks were
known as the four stage concentric offensive plan. These attacks brought Germans to their breaking
point and forced their own General Erich Von Ludendorff to seek for peace. A note was sent to the
United States president Woodrow Wilson which included the acceptance his
Fourteen Points for negotiations. Although it took many notes and discussions,
Germany finally signed an Armistice on November 11th, 1918.
Many battles were fought across the globe. Although The Hundred Days
Offensive wasn t a battle itself, it led many vicious battles which resulted to victory for the Allied
powers and brought an end to World War One. This was the happy ever after for the Allied powers.
With great leaders and ambitious ideas for attacks,
Germans had no
Domestic Violence Meeting Reflection
I attended the Citizens Advisory Committee on Domestic Violence on March 17, at the Dutchess
County Office Building. While there, I learned that this committee (mostly of citizens) was
discussing the issues of their ideas and proposals being funded. They had recently lost grants and
were coming up with ideas to gain that money needed to fund their ideas. I found the title eye
catching. I m always interested in what there is to be done about domestic violence, so seeing this
meeting was a great way to see what is being done about this crime. Going to the event was not
what I expected. The room was even smaller than a classroom at Arlington. Unfortunately, only
half the committee was attending, but the ladies that were there were very nice. They were very
serious and considerate of what issues were on the table. They were well prepared to address ideas
that were from previous meeting and the diversity of the jobs the women worked in gave new
insights to the situation on hand. The women had a very clear understanding of the work that
needed to be done and were trying to come up with solutions to the problems. I appreciated the
consideration they took to answer any questions I had and explain a few things throughout the
meeting. They also had an agenda packet full of what... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

her out with me) as the viewing public. Considering the topic, I would have expected a bigger turn
out or even a larger voice on behalf of the committee. Another problem was how quickly they dove
into the topic at hand. This was definitely a good thing on their end, because they obviously had
done this before, but I was struggling to keep up with the acronyms and ideas that they were talking
about. Granted, at the end, I was able to ask several questions about what they did, but throughout
the meeting it was
The Grasshopper And The Ant In Arthur Miller s Death Of A...
Have you ever heard the story of the Grasshopper and the Ant?
It goes something like this:
In the shimmering sunlight of the summertime, a Grasshopper sits on a warm stone, chirping,
singing, joyous. Not so far away, an Ant hauls an ear of corn to it s home, in preparation for winter.
And winter comes. The Grasshopper, now not so joyous, goes to the Ant, begging, pleading for help,
only to be rebuked by the Ant. The Grasshopper cries: But I sung all summer! To which the Ant
replies: Ah, and perhaps you should dance all winter.
There are variations. But it is with this sentiment that the protagonist of Miller s Death of a
Salesman, Willy Loman, has managed to stay so committed to his goals. One of his sons, Happy,
even describes him as never so happy as when he s looking forward to something . Building towards
something. Willy also seems to be obsessed with the past, with his vibrant flashbacks, and the future,
with his grandiose plans. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He describes Charley, his neighbour, as liked, but not well liked. He does not believe that
Charley is truly successful. Willy can be seen ignoring the promise of Bernard when he was
young, a meek and studious boy, instead praising his Adonis sons. But as the play continues, we
see that Charley has his own business, and Bernard is going to argue a case in front of the
supreme court. These not well liked fellows are doing quite well. There s an excellent line from
Charley pointing out the contrary realities in Willy s perspective: Why must everybody like you?
Who liked J. P. Morgan? Was he impressive? In a Turkish bath he d look like a butcher. But with his

Comparing Two Love Poems
The Passionate Shepard to His Love, written by Christopher Marlow is a sonnet about love and
persuasion. Marlow is trying to persuade his crush to come live with him, and be his love. Marlow
s sonnet is very similar to the song Come on Eileen by Dexy s Midnight Runners, because they are
both seduction pieces. In Come on Eileen, the singer is attempting to win his long time crush over,
asking her to come run away with him. The choice of the words the singer and the poet say, convey
that they cannot live without the person they love; which is one of the main themes of both pieces.
Many devices are used in both works; one that is evident in both pieces is imagery. In Christopher
Marlow s poem, he uses imagery to persuade his love to live with him. Marlow talks about the
finest wool and a thousand fragrant posies, as he tries to win his love over. In Come on Eileen,
the singer uses imagery by persuading Eileen to not be like the beaten down and smoke dried
people of her town; asking Eileen to run away with him and have a better life. Another device used
is in both pieces is repetition. In The Passionate Shepard to His love, Marlow repeats the... Show

In Come on Eileen, the singer says: wear beaten down eyes sunk in smoke dried face, They re so
resigned to what their fate is. In the quote previously indicated, the singer says how the people of
his small town are unhappy and that they do not care; indicating that if he is with Eileen, they
will both have a better life. In The Passionate Shepard to his Love, Marlow mentions the wonders
of his farm. Come live with me, and be my love, And we will all the pleasures prove. Marlow
idealizes his life on the farm and tells his love that her life will be better if he comes and lives with
him. Both of these quotations are related because both authors are persuading their loves to be with
them, with promises of a happier and better
The Rise Of Obesity And Obesity Essay
During 2011 2014, over one third of adults in America had obesity (Ogden, et al. 1). Politicians
and tax researchers have come up with a plan to reduce the prevalence of obesity, by
implementing an excise tax on items containing an excessive amount sugars. On average, sugar
adds almost two hundred kilocalories to a person s diet, and these sugars provide no nutritional
value (Brownell, et al. 1599). Type two diabetes and obesity link to consumption of sugary
beverages, which is a reason they are a target. There is a debate about how the United States should
handle the recent rise in obesity. Some Democratic legislators across the country propose an excise
taxon items containing sugar. Opponents of the excise tax believe people will naturally stop
drinking sodas because they will become educated about the effects of the sugars over time. In
contrast, proponents believe the excise tax is more feasible than waiting for citizens to learn about
the effects of a high sugar diet. Moreover, the tax would be beneficial to the obesity epidemic by
encouraging consumers to buy the healthier options, decreasing the cost of Medicareand Medicaid,
and investing the revenue in programs that are proven to help people with obesity.
The excise tax on sugars would be beneficial to reduce obesity, by encouraging the consumer to
choose the healthier option. The excise tax would tax the producers of products containing
excessive amounts of sugar and should lead to a price increase. If the price

The Relationships of Waverly Jong and Jing mei Woo in The Joy Luck Club
Amy Tan in her novel The Joy Luck Club presents us with daughters who are striving to place
themselves beyond the control of strong mothers and become individuals. Adrienne Rich in her book
Of Woman Born calls this splitting from the mother, matraphobia (Rich, 235), and later notes: The
mother stands for the victim in ourselves, the unfree woman, the martyr. Our personalities seem
dangerously to blur and overlap with our mothers; and, in a desperate attempt to know where mother
ends and daughter begins we perform radical surgery. (Rich, 236) Tan shows us two characters in
her novel who consciously split from their mother when they feel unable to claim ... Show more

Jing mei also makes an attempt to split from her mother in order to know where she begins and
her mother ends. Jing mei perceives that her mother doesn t like her for who she is and feels her
mother is always trying to change her into something she s not. Looking into the mirror one night
she makes the break from her mother: The girl staring back at me was angry, powerful. This girl
and I were the same. I had new thoughts, willful thoughts, or rather thoughts fill with lots of won ts.
I won t let her change me, I promised myself. I won t be what I m not. (Tan 134)
As the novel progresses, Tan shows through the various stories that this separation of mother and
daughter is damaging. Because of this splitting and lack of communication between the mother and
daughter, the daughters perpetuate some of the harmful gender and cultural constructions from
which their mothers had hoped to protect them. An mei Hsu

The History Of Gangs In Chicago
Gangs in Chicago go hand and hand because of the rich history this topic has to offer.
Coincidence? One may think not. In the time of famous mobster, Al Capone, gangs in Chicago
were just evolving but did not live up to the names they have today. This includes their literal
name, gangs , and the reputation they have today. However, groups similar to these of today have
been around since the beginning of time, and not until after Al Capone did these groups get their
name of gang(s) . Before they were just known as mobs . These sort of gangs were groups that had
similar interests, backgrounds and goals they had in common. However, there is a difference
between them then and now, but there are similar characteristics as well. The makeup of gangs today
seem to have the same consistent patterns in terms of people who join, how they join, and where
they join.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
People seem to struggle to understand the concept of gangs. There are a lot of strange factors that
go into the makeup of gangs. Yes, there are no positive aspects of gangs, but those negative
aspects have reasons as to why they are so negative. It is the people who join, that make gangs so
threatening. Men and women who join are trying to get away or rebel from someone or something.
They may feel that joining a gang will give them the security of a family . Those who join are so
broken that they try to put the pieces together when joining a gang. This has been the case
throughout U.S.

Such practice contributes to prosperity of inertia and conservatism. Another negative effect of
ritualization is that there is much attention to external protocol aspects of ritual. Of course,
ceremonity during official events is not an element of only Korean culture, however, it is quite
noticeable that Korean pay a lot of attention to such kind of elements. The combination of hierarchy
and formalism generates a developed system of many conventional symbols that indicate to which
particular system and status a certain person belongs. For many Korean schools, institutions and
even private firms it is normal to have uniforms as a special form of belongingness. The combination
of formalism and authoritarianism puts very strict requirements towards appearance of employees
and lifestyle making it more
