How Does Gruwell Show Courage
Hidden Gems
How often do you see a white teacher transform a class full of recalcitrant students from different
races and backgrounds to a class full of great individuals? That is what happened in the movie
Freedom Writers. Erin Gruwell is the white teacher and the students are class 203 of Woodrow
Wilson High School. At the beginning, class 203 is just a bunch of people who hate learning and
have no future. However, it all changes since the presence of Erin Gruwell. She approaches this
unteachable class and starts to develop their emotional intelligence. From students who like to
neglect the lesson, refuse listening to the teacher, and do not care about each other, they start to
show changes in their learning skill. Ultimately, two of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

But at the start of the movie, the students, notably Marcus and Eva show no enthusiasm nor
compassion in anything and anyone. Nevertheless, the first empathy is shown when the students
come to visit the Holocaust Museum. They are stunned by how they have so much better
situation than the Holocaust survivors. From that moment, Marcus and Eva start to develop
their empathy skill. There is a scene where a guy named Miguel comes up to the middle of the
class and starts to read his journal. Miguel shares his struggle about his early life and how he is
now happy that he has found a new home, class 203. And then, Marcus, a guy who seems very
quiet and tough, approaches him and gives him his empathy. He shakes his hand, hugs him, and
even sheds tears, showing that he empathizes for Miguel.. That scene warms me and I feel
empathy for Miguel as well. A similar situation of empathy is also being displayed by Eva when
she chooses to defend the truth by telling the court that Paco, her boyfriend is the one who killed
the guy in the store instead of the black guy. By saying the truth, she betrays her own people but
she does the right and that shows how she has changed and developed her empathy. According to
Paul Wong s article about empathy he notes that ... individuals are more likely to be empathic to
others, when they have experienced many hardships and are well acquainted with sorrows and
sufferings. This is what I see in the movie, Marcus and Eva realize that they all came from the same
background; that they must fight for their lives, dignity, and existence. Thus, both Marcus and Eva
develop what Wong would call the experiential empathy which is a type of empathy that is
developed when one has experienced other s difficulties. Eventually, Marcus and Eva start to have
an appreciation for Miss Gruwell as a teacher and have empathy toward one another that elevates the
Non-Executive Directors
In his review published in 2003, Derek Higgs described the role of a non executive director as
custodian of the governance process.

A non executive director (NED) sits on the board of company just as a normal executive director
would do so, however a non executive director does not form part of the executive management team
of the company. Essentially they are not an employee of the company or affiliated in any way other
than their role as an independent NED. The distinction between a non executive director and an
executive director is illustrated in Equitable Life Assurance v Bowley [2003] in which Langley J
commented

It is now necessary for companies listed on the LSE to report on how they have applied the Code,

Listings Rules (LR 9.8.6) and to emphasise again, there is no legal binding, however if British
pharmaceuticals plc were to enlist on the London Stock Exchange they need not comply with the
Code, but must provide explanation as to why they have not complied.

There are numerous provisions now included in the Combined Code which provide guidance to
companies with regard to their non executive directors this essay will only examine those key
provisions relevant to the case study scenario.

There is a provision within the Code which suggests that at least half of the board should be
balanced with both executive and non executive directors. The Higgs Review recommended at
least half of the board be made up of NEDs. The Combined Code 2006 where significantly smaller
companies are involved, the board should have at least two non executive directors. According to
provision A.3.3 a company board should also appoint one senior non executive director. Where
nominating new directors, such a nomination committee should be made up of and headed by a non
executive director.
Provision B.1.3 regarding remuneration, recommends companies to assess the levels
Chris Mccandless And Henry David Thoreau
Both Chris McCandless and Henry David Thoreau explore the idea of authentic living and
simplicity, throughout both texts they portray their ideas to the audience. The film Into the WIld
largely encaptures the ideas of Henry David Thoreau, sometimes by quoting him, especially his
extremely famous piece Where I Lived and What I Lived For. It is very obvious to the audience
that Chris is a fan of Thoreau s writing and he connects to it greatly. Chris is able to portray to the
audience that he has the same ideas as Thoreau by talking about his writing occasionally. He
explains simplicity to the people he is close with in order to help them understand why he believes
that simplistic living is so important and beneficial. The ideas that... Show more content on

The poison of society is displayed in an eye opening way to the audience in both texts and assists in
proving the point of the need for escape from society. The significance of simplistic living is
demonstrated throughout the texts and soundtrack of the film. A piece from the film that guides the
importance of escape from pressure is titled Society written by Eddie Vedder. The piece helps the
reader understand what Chris is truly feeling and how it is effecting his happiness in extreme ways.
The song demonstrates the pressures and difficulties of societies we have greed, to which we have
agreed, you think you have to want, more than you need, until you have it all you won t be free (Into
the Wild, Eddie Vedder). These few lines exemplify the greed many people show without knowing
it, it is demonstrating how people always feel the need for more materials without being grateful
for what they already have. It is also showing how people are extremely unhappy when they don t
have everything that they want or feel that they need. This piece is extremely important in the film
because it perfectly captures Chris s feelings towards the poisoned society and his disgust towards
ungrateful and unauthentic people. While Society is being played during the film Chris is being
shown living his life in Alaska and working hard to feed himself, but he is happy in nature. It helps

The Musical Essay
The Musical The classical period of the musical coincided with the heyday of the Hollywood
studios from the early thirties to the early fifties. The conventions of the integrated musical were
formed in the Astaire Rogers musicals made at RKO in the thirties and the form peaked at MGM in
the forties and early fifties, most notably in films produced by Arthur Freed.

Thomas Schatz has provided a useful definition of the integrated musical. `Rather than create a
realistic or at least plausible world whose inhabitants find reasonable motives for breaking into song
(rehearsals, shows, etc.) the music itself seems to determine the attitudes, values and demeanour of
the principal characters. As the musical genre evolved it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Each package is made up of either two or three VHS videocassettes and notes which contextualise
the packages within the genre and place them in relation to other musicals in the Film Study
Collection on film. The notes also provide specific suggestions for the use of extracts from the films
on videocassette.

Films on both VHS and 16mm are organised below into three sub genres (fairytale, show and folk)
proposed by Rick Altman. Not all musicals fall neatly within boundaries of one of these sub genres.
It s Always Fair Weather, for example, as a whole operates as an urban folk musical but the satire of
television in the last third of the film draws it towards the show musical. Although Altman locates
Ziegfield Follies in the fairytale sub genre it seems marginally placed between the fairytale and show
musical. Ostensibly a tribute to the Follies it lacks any unifying narrative. Although the introductory
numbers `Bring on the Beautiful Girls and `Bring on the Wonderful Men display sexual desire as a
motive force, this is not consistently maintained through the series of musical numbers and comedy
sketches that follow. The Fairytale Musical

This sub genreborrowed massively from a long (pre cinema) tradition of European and American
operettas. Methods are a combination of those used by the fairytale and the romantic comedy. In the
early sound years (1929 1934) the sexual energy driving the plot is clearly

Consequences Of Income And Elyth Inequality
Within this essay, the issues and consequences of income and wealth inequalities have been
discussed, considering them on both an individual and a social level. It considers sociological
theories in order to make sense of such consequences and recognise links between inequality and
other sociological concepts, such an education, family, gender and age. It draws on arguments
made by sociologists about the nature of such inequalities and the factors that influence them. It
also highlights the possibility that perhaps such inequalities are not entirely negative and may
have some advantages as well as consequences, such as without it there would be no social
hierarchy. The focus of this essay refers to the consequences of income and wealth inequalities,
both on a social and an individual level. This essay will approach the topic by starting to reflect on
key theories of wealth inequalities and then proceed to discuss the consequences these inequalities
cause. It will then conclude by suggesting reasons such inequalities exist and why they may or may
not be important to the functioning of society. It is an important topic of sociological discussion as
it allows individuals to learn about the ways in which society is divided; primarily in this case,
through wealth. Income and wealth refer to the amount of capital one possesses through earning a
wage or being entitled to benefits provided by the welfare state. Inequality refers to the
disadvantages that individuals are
The Health Of The Human Race
The health of the human race relies on the earth s resources for consumption of food and water. This
dependency is crucial in order to maintain and sustain the future existence of humans on Earth.
Unfortunately, as the world faces agricultural problems such as: price increases, overpopulation, and
climate change, attaining food has proven to become more difficult. Food crises are issues that have
plagued humans across the globe currently and historically. What makes this particular topic
important is not only the innate human need for food, but the fact that this complex problem is
characterized by a complex web of environmental and economic causes. Upon investigation of

As population grows, agricultural production will also grow which creates excessive amounts of
green house gases from fertilizers, cultivation of livestock, and emissions of fuel from tractors
and trucks (populationinstitute.org). Climate change is already affecting many of the food
sources available globally. Farmers across the world are experiencing the ebb and flow of
temperature changes, droughts, floods, windstorms, and fires. These climatic disasters lead to
issues with livestock and crop productivity, and thus, a shortage of food. Climate change has
caused an immense rise in ocean temperatures causing some marine life to stray further away
from fisheries in search of cooler water (epa.gov/climatechange). The Environmental Protection
Agency (EPA) determined that over 40 million people in the Lower Mekong delta in Asia rely on
fisheries for food (epa.gov/climatechange). The issue of melting Arctic ice caps changes the sea
level which has affected water quality and amount of different marine species in this area (epa.gov
/climatechange). The future of climate change is detrimental to regions that are currently affected
by drought. For example, Australia and the Sahel region in Africa will be exposed to lower
irrigation quantities (epa.gov/climatechange). In addition lower latitude areas are also like to
experience a drop in crop production due to lack of water. Some African countries that depend on
rain fed crops, may experience a 50%

Ethics in Technology Essay
In the early years of computers and computerized technology, computer engineers had to believe that
their contribution to the development of computer technology would produce positive impacts on
the people that would use it. During the infancy of computer technology, ethical issues concerning
