Hills Like White Elephants By Ernest Hemingway And The...
Have you ever read a piece of literature and examined how a male writer portrays a woman in the
reading? Many times, in a literature written by a male writer there is a dominant ideology of
having the male character have a superior authority to the woman in the story. The two stories
where this is clearly seen is in Hills like White Elephants by Ernest Hemingway and The Babysitter
by Robert Coover. Both these stories show the strong influence of the male character. Both stories
portrayed women as vulnerable figures, it also shows men exposing their sexual desire toward
women and it seen a normal characteristic of a man. Lastly, both stories are written by men which
creates a biased on how the story portrays the women. In both... Show more content on

His persistence and with this woman leads the main character to dominate because of the female
being a woman. In Babysitter the main character is also seen as a vulnerable woman as well as
she is not given a name which leads to infer she does not even have an identity. Having an identity
is very important in a story because it makes them someone in the story. Having a name
establishes an identity for the character in this case the girl does not have one but all the male
figure have a name. Also, the title tells us the girl is a babysitter. That job of a babysitter is the
most common female job that any teenage can have. Making the girl a babysitter is one of the
most common woman job and symbolizes a lot. It symbolizes this girl that is growing and
learning to be a mother. The setting that Coover gives the teen girl without a name and having a
job as a babysitter makes it clear that she is young and leading to it meaning she is also vulnerable
and in defensive. Now a days men sexual desires towards women is portrayed
The Is A Japanese Word For Higher Gross Domestic Product...
Countries have always competed economically. The government pushes for higher Gross
Domestic Product, hoping that they will become the richest country. During economic crises,
countries want to recover and have stability. All of this means that employees must work longer
and harder. However, there are more consequences than countries realize. The more employees
work, the more stressed they become, lowering their well being. Large epidemics begin spreading
throughout nations. As countries demand higher GDP, their people begin to suffering causing
numerous deaths from overworking or suicide due to stress. Karoshi is a Japanese word for the
epidemic spreading throughout the world, where people are worked to death. Instead of focusing
on the population s well being, countries are only concerned with the economy, pushing
employees to work long and stressful hours. The term, karoshi, first appeared in the early 1980s,
when Japan enter into their bubble economy. Karoshi is defined as the, condition of being
permanently unable to work or dead due to acutely ischemic heart disease such as myocardial
infraction, or acute heart failure caused by cerebral vascular diseases such as cerebral hemorrhage,
subarachnoid hemorrhage and cerebral infraction, because inherent health problems such as
hypertension and arteriosclerosis are deteriorated by excessive work overload (Kanai). For a while,
the Ministry of Health Labor and Welfare in Japan did not focus on the issue because they

Educational drama in education
Educational drama in education for sustainable development: ecopedagogy in action

he research on which this paper is based is a response to the UNESCO directive for the Decade of
Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) 2005 2014. Educators are advised to prepare young
people for sustainable development and global citizenship and the Arts should be included in
programmes in ESD. This paper presents an overview of a research project based on the hypothesis
that educational drama might be a useful medium for teaching and learning in environmental,
sustainable development and global citizenship education. Central to the project, an ethnographic

Its goal is to encourage changes in behaviour that will create a more sustainable future in terms of
environmental integrity, economic viability, and a just society for present and future generations
(UNESCO 2005) and to help young people to become global citizens (UNESCO 2006). In response,
the Scottish Government (SDELG 2006) recommends that education for sustainable development
should offer young people opportunities to practise and develop:

sensitivity to and appreciation of the social and natural environment;

some factual understanding of environmental and social problems and issues;

knowledge/understanding of the social environment;

skills to find out about and explore environmental issues;

civic skills to influence decision‐making in society;

researching and communicating information about one s own environment;

improving one s own environment: acting responsibly; and

critical reflection on the quality of environmental developments.

Educators are challenged to find interesting and meaningful ways of helping young people to
develop the knowledge, skills and values they will need to become actively involved in building a
more sustainable future. UNESCO states that drama can be part of the teaching and learning
process. This paper sets out the results of a research project the aim of which was to discover if the
Polytetrafluoroethylene
Polymers have been changing the way we live for over 100 years. Their availability and diverse
qualities ensure that they are always in high demand, and new polymers are always being
discovered. Where does this leave the now commonplace polymers which once were ubiquitous in
commerce? Polymers such as polyoxybenzylmethylenglycolanhydride (Bakelite) and
polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) were first synthesised in 1907 and 1938 respectively, making them
old by polymerstandards. Although the original polymer applications are now redundant, they have
found uses in new areas of society. This dynamic aspect of polymers is due to their unique structure.
Polymers are created from many small molecules (or monomers) reacting with each other, and

It was discovered in the 60s that a reaction between PTFE and magnesium produced a violent and
exothermic reaction. This occurred because magnesium is a highly reactive metal, which when
burned, gives of an intense, white light. (S.I.F., 2013) In addition, magnesium emits infrared
when burned, making it ideal for military use as a decoy flare. However, magnesium requires an
oxidiser a material that takes electrons from the fuel allowing the reaction to take place. This is
why flares are made of PTFE and magnesium, as it is the fluorine in PTFE that allows the reaction
to take place. Fluorine is a proficient oxidiser, more so than oxygen, as it contains more gaps for
valence electrons, allowing the reaction to obtain a higher temperature of combustion. Figure 6
shows magnesium s preference for reacting with the fluorine in teflon over oxygen to form MgF2(l),

Faith In White Teeth Research Paper
Faith in White Teeth In the novel White Teeth by Zadie Smith, the theme of faith plays a primary
role in the significant events of the character s lives. All the characters believe in some type of faith.
Smith does a great job in bringing in different types of faith. We have examples of religious faith,
faithin science, and faith in humanity. All different types of faith are controlled by forces beyond
their control. Zadie smith explores the idea of fate in religious, scientific, and humanistic contexts. In
White Teeth, the characters make very tough choices. The choices they make represents the faith
that they believe in. Not only do their choices represent their faith, but their choices are controlled
by their faith in some form. Each character believes in a higher power, whether its Godor something
superior to themselves, such as science or humanity. In the beginning of the novel, we read about
an interesting character named Archie Jones. Instead of making his decisions based on his
morals and beliefs, he makes his decisions based on a coin toss. He doesn t believe that life offers
real choices, everything in the end is already chosen for us. He decides to shoot Marc Pierre Perret
and commit suicide with a toss of a coin. These are life changing decisions and he decides his

Similarities Between 1984 And Vonnegut
In the novels, 1984 by George Orwell and Slaughterhouse five by Kurt Vonnegut the writers use
narrative disruption to convey the meaning of their story. Although Orwell and Vonnegut use the
narrative disruption in different manners they both cause the reader to deviate from a certain trains
of thoughts. Orwell and Vonnegut use foreshadowing, change in narrative pace, and shift in dialogue
to display narrative disruption that causes the reader to gain a deeper understanding of the character.
Vonnegut uses narrative disruption much more directly and in an obvious manner since Billy
Pilgrim travels in time causing him to shift from one story to another. While Orwell uses it more
subtly to depict changes in mood and thought. In 1985, Winston... Show more content on

In 1984, when Winston is writing in his journal he seems to be frantically spilling out all his
thoughts and ideas. This causes the illusion that time is going by faster. The shift in narrative
pace is seen in this sentence, His small but childish handwriting straggled up and down the page,
shedding first its capital letters and finally even its full stops: April 4th 1984. Last night to the
flicks. All war films. One very good one of a ship full of refugees being bombed somewhere in the
Mediterranean... (1984, p 11) The narrative shifts from third person to first person when he writes
in his journal. When he is first writing in the journal it s almost as if he has so many thoughts he
can t write them all down in the amount of time; he writes snippets of what his mind is thinking.
The narrative pace also appears to go faster when he is writing in his journal or when he is
committing crimes against the party because he is enjoying it and things seem to go by faster.
When Winston is working with tedious things time goes extremely slow because it is unfulfilling
and draining to participate in conversations with Parson. Time in the cell seems to go on for
eternity, but he is not sure how much time has passed. The narrative pace in Slaughterhouse five
goes slower in order to create a miserable setting in the novel. He had never had an old gang, old
sweethearts and pals, but he missed one anyway,
Essay on Bilingual Education in American Schools
Suppose your child has been moved to China. Your child does not speak Chinese; is it the school
system s responsibility to teach your child in English? Or should your child be expected to learn in
the country s language and perhaps get extra help on the side? Why should a school district spend
money on bilingual classes rather than on reducing class sizes?

In the United States of America we have become a large melting pot of ethnic and cultural peoples.
Along with these peoples have come many different languages and alphabets. However the US has
been seen as a mostly English speaking country. Yet many of this country s newcomers do not speak
English. Adults and children alike come into the US speaking and writing only their ... Show more

(LA Times 1998) this can create a large gap in understanding between the student and her classmates.

Many try to argue that there needs to be made allowances for these children. One example is the
Spanish speaking community. In the 1998 census, Hispanics represented about 14.6 million of the
population. With in five years they represented 16.9 and were expected to represent between 23.1
and 26.9 of the United States population by the year 2000. (From Community to College p.390) A
lot of educators feel that there needs to be bilingual classes to accommodate this growing Hispanic
community.

Another great example of school funds being used to accommodate non English speaking children
was in the state of Massachusetts, from Reason Magazine .

In Massachusetts, school officials actually created an alphabet so that Kriolu an obscure spoken
only dialect of Portuguese used in parts of the Cape Verde Islands could be written for the first time.
Textbooks and a curriculum followed, and now Massachusetts boasts the only schools in the entire
world where classes are taught in Kriolu. (The unenlightened schools of the Cape Verde Islands
continue to teach in Portuguese.) Massachusetts even sends home report cards and school bulletins
in Kriolu. The parents have no idea whatsoever what this stuff says none of them can read Kriolu but

Essay On Foreign Law
Foreign Law
Canada s Legal System is based on the English and French systems, they base this system on
common law and civil law, also called Bijuralism. Common law is law that evolved from
precedent but is not written as legislation. Civil law is rules to be a general guidance to problems
that arise, courts do look at precedent, but they first look at the rules. Canada is a federation,
which means it has a federal parliament that makes laws for all of Canada, and a legislature in each
provinces and territories to make laws for their areas.
With laws comes law reform, some laws may not cover specific situations, or become obsolete all
together. With law reform Canada can sometimes change the system of law and even justice itself.

Civil law is usually between people or people and the government, they usually deal with things
like contracts, property, and personal injuries (also known as torts). Public law can be relevant in
both criminal cases and civil cases, when a case show that the powers of the government or rights
of the citizens under the constitution or a federal law is involved in the case. An example of a
public law case would be a person accusing someone of revoking a constitutional right.
Disputes can sometimes be taken to court, although a large percentage is settled outside of the
courtroom. When taking a case to court there are two kinds, trial courts, and appeals courts. Trial
courts are where evidence is presented, witnesses are questioned, and the case is put before a judge
or a judge and jury. If one of the parties is unhappy with the outcome they could appeal the case
sending it to appeals court. In appeals court the appellant submits its case to a panel of judges to
review the previous court s decision to either change the previous decision or continue with the
decision of the previous court. Legislation is only the beginning to the law, the judicial system is
what makes the law a reality and that is the court system.
Law effects the people even if the crime is never committed by that person, although laws help to
prevent crime, the laws help lead to resolutions after a crime has been committed. The
Human Family And Barack Obama s Speech On Race
In the articles, Human Family by Maya Angelou and Barack Obama s Speech on Race by Barack
Obama, common beliefs are displayed throughout the two different articles. The texts both express
common beliefs and themes about the differences and similarities about people that should be
celebrated.

In Maya Angelou s poem, Human Family, she shows that all humans need to work together. This
statement can be proven in the 7th stanza where she states, We love and lose in China,/ we weep on
England s moors,/ and laugh and moan in Guinea,/ and thrive on Spanish shores. This quotes shows
that without all of the help around the world the human race would not have prospered for as long
as they have. The statement that all humans need to work together can also be proven in Barack
Obama s speech, Barack Obama s Speech on Race. In the 6th paragraph he states, ...because I
believe deeply that we cannot solve the challenges of our time unless we solve them together.... This
quote connects to Maya Angelou s quote because it shows that they both believe that the human race
must work together to have the best possible life. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In Maya Angelou s poem she repeats the statement, We are more alike, my friends, than we are
unalike. This quote shows that while the human race is different that if they look at their
similarities they will be able to overcome obstacles easier. In Barack Obama s speech he also
show the idea of our differences being celebrated by describing his own personal life and how it
is different than everyone else s life. But, he shows that we should be proud of our differences. In a
quote from paragraph 8 of his speech he states, But it is a story that has seared into my genetic
makeup the idea that this nation is more that the sum of its parts that out of many, we are truly
Technology Vs. Human Interaction In The Pedestrian By Ray...
The piece of literature I have chosen is The Pedestrian by Ray Bradbury. It s about a not so far
dystopian future where nobody leaves their house and television is more important than human
interaction. This story revealed to me that people will chose technology and the comfort of their
home over human interaction. People lost their sense of interaction. It also revealed to me that in
the natural world being the slightest different can cause suspicion and problems. In the story, the
narrator, Leonard Mead, is taking his nightly walk around the city. As usual is around 8:30 and
nobody is out. He glances through the windows of nearly every house he passes and sees the
flicker of the television on the curtains. He had been walking everyday for 10 years and not once
did he see anybody outside. Today if you were to walk outside at 8:30pm you would run into at
least 10 people. In this future everybody prefers to be in their house watching their TVs or some
other electronical device. Mr. Mead would walk past the houses and ask questions like What are the
cowboys rushing? and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Mead is pulled over by the police because he was walking. He mentions that in a city of 3 million,
there was only one police car left. This tells me that because of people obsession with being home,
the crime rate dropped and no police were needed. The last police car was self driving and
responsive. In other words, it would pull you over and talk to you. No human interaction needed.
The cop asked him what his profession was and Mr. Mead replied I guess you could call me a writer.
The cop replied No profession insisting that writing wasn t a profession. The cop then asked Mr.
Mead why he was out of his house. He replied Walking for air. Walking just to see. The cop told him
his house had air conditioner and a viewing screen for a reason. The cop arrested Mr. Mead because
his answers were suspicious. Mr. Mead was different and this caused him to be
Holocaust Survivors Essay
Holocaust Survivors

Who survived the holocaust? What are their lives like today? What has been the government s
response towards those who survived after World War II? Have the survivors kept their faith? How
has the survivors next generation been affected? The survivors of the holocaust were deeply effected
by the trauma they encountered. This unforgettable experience influenced their lives, those around
them, and even their descendants.

When the infamous Hitler began his reign in Germany in 1933, 530,000 Jews were settled in his
land. In a matter of years the amount of Jews greatly decreased. After World War II, only 15,000
Jews remained. This small population of Jews was a result of inhumane killings and also the fleeing

A voluntary relief organization was issued. This group collected food, clothing, and other goods to
help those persecuted Jews get back on their feet. They also offered special housing to allow the
survivors a place to start again. Along with this relief program, a new legislation was created to
return confiscated Jewish assets to their lawful owners. The German government even began paying
the returning victims $1,500 to show their sympathy. Though these programs helped Jews, Germans
needed to develop a new attitude to earn respect from the Jews. To state the government s new
intentions in writing, Article III was created and added to the German constitution, called the
Grundgesetz. This addition solemnly proclaimed the equality of all men before the law: no one
could be discriminated against because of sex, race, nationality, ethnic origins, faith, or political
views . However, most Germans and Jews wanted action, instead of merely a declaration of what
should be done. In order to take action towards their goal of equality, the whole community needed
education in the spirit of human and religious tolerance . 3

The holocaust greatly effected the population of the Jews and their families. The Jew mortality rate
after the second World War was two times that of the general German population. This was due to
health problems provoked during the holocaust and the persecution on their will to
