Road To Mecca
The nature of Elsa s character
Athol Fugard s play, The road to Mecca introduces a character, Elsa Barlow, a complex character
with strong opinions. She comes across as confused and troubled throughout the play, battling with
her own depression while also trying to help her old friend miss Helen with her troubles. Within
this essay I am going to discuss how the confinement of time, the year 1974, and space, which is
Miss Helen s home, helps readers see deeper into the nature of Elsa s character. I will discuss how
her character unfolds through her perceptions of Nieu Bethesda as well as how her attitudes and
disclosures further reveal the nature of her character and lastly what effects the confinement of time
have on the dramatic tension between ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Elsa s dynamic character has presented itself on multiple occurrences where her mood changes from
one mood to another, her mood changes from being desperate to openly resistant and then from
annoyed to remorseful. Elsa is also a foil character, the contrast between her and Helen, enhances
Helen s character, the protagonist. Thus this concludes the nature of Elsa s character in the
confinement of time and
Anne Of Green Gables
In the passage, Anne of Green Gables the author uses dialogue to develop the characters and to
advance the plot. The author, Lucy Maud Montgomery, uses dialogue to develop Marilla as a
caring person and to develop Anne as a determined person. The dialogue suggest that Marilla is a
caring person because she was concerned when Anne dyed her hair green. According to the text, I
little know how you got into this fix, but I mean to find out, said Marilla...Now, then, what did
you do to your hair? Also the text says, Well, I hope you ll repent to good purpose, said Marilla
severely, and that you ve got your eyes opened to where your vanity has led you, Anne. Goodness
knows what s to be done. I suppose the first thing is to give your hair
The Hobbit And I Robot Comparison
The Hobbit and I, Robot are both incredibly popular books and their significance is quite apparent.
Within these books, we see distinct themes at play that try to convey deep messages that are
important to know. Though they aren t alike in many ways, they re noteworthy at the very least.
They differ in many more aspect, and that s okay. Differences bring new ideas and create
conclusions we never saw before.

Though not incredibly apparent from the start, The Hobbit and I, Robot share many similarities. It s
possible they are more different than alike, but that doesn t stop these books from having the
ability of being compared in some ways. For example, one of the most obvious comparisons can
be drawn from the good versus evil theme within The Hobbit and I, Robot. There s a clear team
we should root for, and a team we should loathe. Another way they re alike is the way each race is
loyal to their own. The elves would never betray one of their own and the same goes for the
humans in I, Robot. Throughout each book, we also see incidents of greed taking place in several
different ways. These three distinct examples provide context for how these seemingly completely ...

It s actually incredibly easy to see they re different in a multitude of ways. Their stories aren t
even in remotely the same areas, and with that, we see vast differences in those ways. While the
people in I, Robot display fear towards the robots, characters in The Hobbit show courage against
their foes. We see the robots follow a distinct order in I, Robot while some people in The Hobbit
take it upon themselves to conduct some cunning actions. Though, that all stems from the fact that
the robots are forced to behave in an orderly fashion because they re programmed that way, while
the characters in The Hobbit have the freedom to do as they
Catholic Education Research Paper
I cannot describe what Catholic Education means to me currently without recalling what it once
meant to me. Catholic Education meant different things to me at different stages of my life. From
kindergarten to around grade 5, Catholic Education was just education. I knew public schools
existed. I understood that Catholic schools engaged students in the Catholic faith. Like my peers I
would pray, listen during religionlessons, and sit cross legged on the gymnasium floor, cramped
together with 500 other students. The masses meant nothing to me. (They really just meant
discomfort because my legs would always fall asleep.) I listened to most lessons passively all the
time, and religion lessons were no exception. Prayers were only memorized... Show more content on

I came to conclusions about my faith and Catholic Education. Catholic Education still does not
mean much to me. However, it brings together people who (most of the time) come from a
Catholic/Christian backgrounds, and creates a sense of community. For that I appreciate
Catholic Education. What I do not find as nice about Catholic schools is that despite being
centred around religion, people in Catholic schools can be just as mean spirited, rude, and
uncompassionate as people in public schools, if not worse. I am aware that it is unrealistic to
assume that those in Catholic schools are all wonderful people, but I find reality ironic. In my
opinion, Catholic Education is like public education, except Catholic students have school masses
and are obligated to take religion courses. As I introduced previously, being subject to Catholic
Education and those devoutly religious for the better part of 13 years has guided me to my brand
of Catholicism so to speak. Catholic Education has inadvertently, or possibly intentionally, started
me off on my own spiritual path by showing me what I do not like about Catholicism (eg. the belief
that not going to church is bad). Spirituality and personal religious beliefs are lifelong works in
progress, and I suppose that without Catholic Education my progress would have started later in my
Beowulf Epic Hero
History teaches the essential qualities of a typical hero: bravery, courage, wit, though an epic
hero utilizes a trait unorthodox to most of humanity a fatal flaw. Beowulf, an epic poem
composed by an unknown Anglo Saxon, is the first piece of work written in Old English. It tells
the story of a warrior, (of the same name), and his quests to defeat all evil that terrorizes the
Scandinavian regions. The epic poem was told in order to encourage men to help defend their
lands. The Anglo Saxon men were ones who believed in being heroes for their people. Like Beowulf,
tales were told to show how a warrior should behave. Beowulf illustrates an epic heroby: risking
death for the greater good, performing brave deeds, and by reflecting the ideas... Show more content

In Anglo Saxon culture and literature, to be a hero is to be a warrior. A hero had to be strong,
intelligent, and courageous. Beowulf was a very prideful warrior, he loved to let others know of
his victories. Once again with the scene of Beowulf and Unferth, Beowulf states, ... I was the
strongest swimmer of them all. (Heaney, ll. 534) He also included, When it comes to fighting, I
count myself as dangerous any day as Grendel. (Heaney, ll. 677 678) Anglo Saxon are also widely
significant. This is shown when the narrator states that, Beowulf was quickly brought to the
chamber: the winner of fights, the arch winner... (Heaney, ll.1310 1311) This quote emphasizes what
others thought of the warrior Beowulf. Other Anglo Saxon characteristics include: loyalty,
generosity, courtesy, etc.; all of which exhibited at one point in the

The Colossus and Daddy by Sylvia Plath
Sylvia Plath is one of the greatest poets of all time the queen of confessional poetry. Her writing is
thick with figurative language that cannot be interpreted only one way. Sylvia Plath herself was
complicated, and she struggled with her own personal hardships up until the day she took her own
life. Plath s father passed when she was only eight, and she struggled with his absence not only
though the rest of her childhood but also into adult hood. Many critics believe her famous poems,
such as The Colossus and Daddy, were confessional poems Sylvia wrote about her father. Although
there are many ties within her poetry to her real father, her writing cannot only be interpreted this
way. Sylvia had many demons she likely tried to tackle or even understand through her writing her
pain channeling through the speaker. The Colossus, a poem widely believed to stem from her own
experiences with death and depression, is a beautiful poem rich with imagery that exposes the pain
of living forever in the shadows. The literal definition of colossus means large statue. A colossus can
be a statue that represents a deceased person. The Colossus of Rhodes, one of the seven ancient
wonders of the world, was so grand in size it was considered one of the tallest statues during that
time. The speaker of Sylvia s poem tries to put together a man, whether it be her father or not, to
understand him. She considers him a monument, a colossus, an ancient wonder of the world that
holds power
The Importance Of My Family Traditions
Throughout life many families develop habits that they continue each year. These habits are known
as traditions and many families have them. One thing I find when asked what is unique of my
family, is the fact that we have many traditions and are constantly finding new habits we form into
traditions. Traditions around the holidays are common for many families, as well as for my family
also. Many of the traditions that my family have are around Easter and Christmas, but there are also
many more that bring us together throughout the year.
Each year my family has a big Easter celebration. Growing up we would wait anxiously while the
older kids and adults would hide the plastic Easter eggs stuffed with candy and money. When the
front door opened we raced out onto my grandparents farm to find as many eggs as we could. As we
got older the egg hunting was just not as fun so my grandmother suggested that we do a decorating
contest. We could do anything we wanted to the eggs as long as we used the egg base. We still
continue on the egg hunt for the little ones, but often find ourselves trying to add on to replace the
missing piece of it. Even just this last Easter we added on to our fun festivities. We divided into
teams and did an egg scavenger hunt. We all loved it and have decided to make it an annual tradition.
For Christmas the constant traditions are no different. My family loves Christmas and enjoys getting
to spend the time together. For us the celebration starts early, as
Henrietta Lacks Medical Advancement
Medical science has come a long way in the last 65 years. There have been many significant medical
advances, including the development of the polio vaccine, the perfection of cell culturing techniques,
the advent of medical commercialization, and progress towards understanding cancer and HIV. All
of this and much, much more was made possible by one woman: Henrietta Lacks. She was an
African American woman born in 1920, and by the time she died of cancerin 1951, she had made no
direct contributions to the world of medicine. In fact, the thing that has since brought Henrietta s
name into the medical world was the very thing that ended up killing her. All of this was made
possible by what doctors discovered inside of her tumor. At the time that Henrietta was admitted to
the oncologyclinic at Johns Hopkins in 1951, the world s researchers and doctors were trying to find
a way to grow human cells outside of the human body. This would enable them... Show more content

Gey found that he was producing so many HeLa cells, and he saw the potential that these cells
had to advance medical technology, so he began sending samples of HeLa internationally to
laboratories everywhere. At this time, between 1951 and 1952, the world faced a polio epidemic.
Researchers were doing to polio vaccine research, but didn t have samples of the virus itself in
order to perform their tests and experiments. One of Dr. Gey s collaborators found that polio
responded positively to exposure to HeLa. They found that injecting the polio virus into a HeLa
cell, through mitosis, would result in the creation of a new polio virus, kind of like copy and
pasting the virus itself. This discovery became a revolution in modern science, and immediately, a
HeLa cell producing factory was built at the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama. There, the virus was
produced in enough quantity that doctors were able to do their vaccine testing, and develop a polio
vaccine by 1952. As a result, polio was all but removed from the
The OLD Manas Short Story
THE OLD MANAs a kid I had the experience a recurring of confrontation with a mysterious old
man. Whether it was a night or day dream, I don t recall, but is was real to the child I was,
however, it could have been my youthful imagination. He was elderly, as stated, with white
patches of hair on either side of his head, with a shiny island of raw umber betwixt the two.
Walking slow, in a kind of shuffle, he nevertheless seemed aware of his steps, and the things around
him, always looking straight ahead, and directly at me when on a occasion I encountered him in the
neighborhood. In the winter, a big tattered overcoat enveloped his otherwise thin boney frame, his
bobbing head poking up from the collar like a periscope, and otherwise long dangling... Show more

The old gentleman would appear at the most unexpected times, yet months would go by, and I
could have completely forgotten him and grown up never to see him again except from the cove
of childhood memories we for some reason never forget. Nevertheless, there he was; coming out
of a back alley as I turned a corner; or crossing a street as I approached from the other side. Once
old timer even came into the grassless yard of our shotgun double as I was sitting on the rotten
wooden steps waiting for my brother and sisters to return from school, I wasn t old enough yet to
attend. This was my station, to sit there and keep an eye on my stroke burden grandfather as he
rocked and mumbled his thoughts to no one present. He stepped half way up the walk, and stood
there, looking at me and I back at him more out of curiosity then fear. Eventually he reached out
his hand as if to make a request or ask a question of me, then as if remembering, lowered his head
and turned and walked away. One day I was standing in an abandoned field behind our house. We
kids would meet their and think of games to play; mostly kick the ball. I was there tossing the ball
up in the air, waiting for the other kids to show up, when I see him coming down the
Chemical Formula Review
Chemical Formulas Review: Nomenclature and Formula Writing
Naming Simple Compounds
There are four naming systems you should familiarize yourself with to succeed on the SAT II
Chemistry exam. The trick is recognizing which naming system to use. Here are the guidelines: * If
the compound starts with H, it is an acid. Use the naming acids rules. * If the compound starts with
C and contains quite a few H s and perhaps some O s, it is organic. Use the naming organic
compounds rules. * If the compound starts with a metal, it is most likely ionic. Use the naming
binary ionic compounds rules. * If the compound starts with a nonmetal other than H or C, use the
naming binary molecular compounds rules.
It is also essential that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
H2SO3 is sulfurous acid.
Acids have enough H+ added to the anion to make the compound neutral. Supply either the acid s
name or its formula to complete the table below: Acid formula| Acid name| HCl| | | Hypochlorous
acid| | Chlorous acid| | Chloric acid| | Hyperchloric acid (or perchloric acid)| HNO3| | | Hydrobromic
acid| H3PO4| | H3PO3| | | Hydrocyanic acid| HC2H3O2| | | Carbonic acid| | Hydroiodic acid| HF| |
Naming Organic Compounds
How do you know it s organic? The formula will start with a C followed by H s. Most of the
organic carbons you will encounter will be either hydrocarbons or alcohols, and luckily for you,
these are the simplest of all to name. Learn the list of prefixes in the table following this section:
they correspond to the number of carbons present in the compound. The following silly statement
will help you remember the order of the first four prefixes since they are not ones you are familiar
with: Me eat peanut butter. This corresponds to meth , eth , prop , and but , which correspond to
one, two, three, and four carbons, respectively.
Now that we have a stem, we need an ending. There are three common hydrocarbon endings; the
ending changes depending on the structure of the molecule: * ane = alkane (all single bonds and
saturated); CnH2n+2; saturated: it contains the maximum number of H s * ene = alkene (contains
double bond, unsaturated); CnH2n *

Analysis of the Inspector in An Inspector Calls by J.B. Priestley

The word Inspector suggests someone who looks closely at things, and this is his role in the
events of the play. This, and the fact that Priestly recognised the Birlings would almost certainly
have refused to be questioned by a common policeman, is probably the reason why the person to
bring the news of Eva/Daisy s death is portrayed as an inspector.

The Inspector is never given one specific identity, but there are some which would suit his
character. The Inspectors name Goole sounds the same as ghoul someone with a morbid interest in
death or a spirit which is said to take fresh life from corpses, and it is ... Show more content on

He often plays the voice of conscience, his familiarity with what each character has done goes
beyond what any investigator might reasonably be expected to know. Things that they concealed
from eachother even from themselves are brought to surface at the Inspectors insistence. Priestley
intentionally leaves the provenance of the figure of the Inspector unexplained, his real identity a
mystery. This is more effective than any clarification would have been because to reveal that the
Inspector was, for example, a practical joker ( as the Birlings hope) or that he was a sort of
avenging spirit would ruin the effect the Inspector has on the audience.

The effect the Inspector has on the audience is as important as the effect he has on the characters in
the play. This is because of what he represents; the conscience of not only the characters but of also
the audience.

Through the Inspector Priestley presents us, the audience, with a sincerely felt and powerfully
expressed social message. We are shown the comfortable home and rich way of life of the Birling
family. By contrast, we have the accounts of the desperate attempts of Birlings factory workers to
increase their poor wages, and the drab and sordid life that Eva/ Dais is forced to lead as a result of
the actions of people such as the Birlings. Priestleys compassion for the lower and
Ancient Civilization And The Mayan People
Every ancient civilization had a set of beliefs and the Mayan people were no different. The
Mayan people believed in two worlds, the everyday world and the underworld, or the Place of
Awe, (2012). The Mayans believed in many gods, human sacrifice and the burial process for the
poor and the kings were very different. The Mayans became around 250 AD and the Olmec s
influenced their religious culture. It was not until 900 AD that the Mayans began to flourish in
cities across modern day Mexico, Guatemala and north Belize. One of the most important gods
for the Mayans was the supreme god Itzamana, the creator god, the god of fire and god of the
earth (2012). Itzamana is shown as a king who was in charge of minor gods. The God of
Itzamana is connected to the sacred world tree, or Ceiba tree, which for the Maya linked together
the sky, earth, and the underworld (2012). The Mayas believed in two worlds, the everyday world
and the underworld or place of Awe. The Mayan people believed that gods, spirits and dead
ancestors lived in the underworld. The person in charge of sending people to the underworld was
the main chief. Unlike some religions, the belief of the underworld for the Mayans was very sad,
dark, cold and a place where there where mean gods that would torment them (2015). The Maya
believed super natural levels not as heaven and hell, but the upper, middle and underworld that
consisted of many levels with the underworld being the lowest level. The Ceiba tree or
Flies And Lord Of The Flies Analysis
Lord of the Flies written by William Golding, and The Simpsons Das Bus episode, the parody of the
novel, both showcase the fierce battle between nature and the children. The reader discloses who
leads and who breaks through the harsh environment alive. These stories can compare in numerous
ways, but also differ in many ways so that The Simpsonsfans find it comical. Lord of the Flies has a
much more serious tone, while The Simpsons episode tries to add a bit of a twist that makes it s
humorful to its audience. Many of the characters in The Simpsons resemble the ones in Lord of
the Flies, which makes the two Lord of the Flies , very easy to compare and contrast. Lord of the
Flies and The Simpsons both compare and contrast Bart and Ralph, how they keep everyone in
control, and also how they become savages.
Every story has a protagonist, these characters are the ones the lead and keep everyone in control.
They give the other little characters someone to follow and guide them through whatever journey
they are going through. These two characters are Bart Simpson and Ralph from Lord of the Flies.
Bart and Ralph are very alike in both of these stories. When the kids get to the island one of the
first things that both of the boys grab is the conch. This immediately represents leadership and
communication. Both boys use the conch to get everyone s attention and to call meetings.
Instantly Ralph and Bart are looked at as the leader of their groups. Another comparison between
them is towards the end of their times spent at the island there are people who rebel and want to
kill the two great leaders. Both Bart and Ralph start off as the people to follow and quickly
become the kids to kill because of the few mistakes they made as leaders. The Simpsons episode
is considered comical to it s viewers. It is not supposed to be a serious tone like Lord of the Flies.
This is why the groups of kids both have different ways of handling things and keeping things in
order. In the episode Das Bus , Nelson portrays Jack, Lisa portrays Simon, the two twins portray
Sam and Eric, and Milhouse portrays Piggy. When Milhouse is charged for getting them stuck on
this island, it is proposed that they have a court session to
