CHAPTER THREE: RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

3.1 Research Design

This study adopts a descriptive survey design, which allows for the collection and analysis of data on the
nature, causes, and patterns of crime in Anguwan Rukuba. The design is appropriate for exploring the
opinions, experiences, and perceptions of residents, law enforcement officers, and other stakeholders
on crime trends in the area.

3.2 Study Area

Anguwan Rukuba is located in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State, Nigeria. It is a densely
populated area characterized by ethnic diversity, economic disparity, and urban sprawl. These socio-
spatial features make it a significant location for crime pattern assessment.
3.3 Population of the Study

The target population includes:

Residents of Anguwan Rukuba

Local leaders and elders

Members of the Nigeria Police Force stationed in the area

Youth groups and community security operatives (vigilantes)

3.4 Sample Size and Sampling Technique

Using purposive and stratified random sampling, 120 respondents will be selected:

90 residents (randomly selected from households)

10 community leaders

10 youth representatives

10 police/vigilante/security personnel
This stratified approach ensures diverse representation and relevance of responses.

3.5 Sources of Data

Primary Data: Questionnaires, structured interviews, and field observations

Secondary Data: Police crime records, published research, newspaper reports, and government
documents

3.6 Research Instruments

Structured questionnaire (for residents and community members)

Key Informant Interview (KII) guide (for police officers and community leaders)

3.7 Validity and Reliability of Instruments

The questionnaire will be pre-tested in a nearby community (e.g., Tudun Wada) to ensure clarity and
relevance.

Feedback will guide refinement of items for accuracy and consistency.

Cronbach’s Alpha will be used to measure internal consistency (aiming for α ≥ 0.7).

3.8 Method of Data Collection

Field researchers will administer questionnaires face-to-face.

Interviews will be recorded (with permission) and later transcribed.

Observational data on crime hotspots will be noted and mapped.

3.9 Method of Data Analysis

Quantitative data (from questionnaires) will be analyzed using descriptive statistics (frequency,
percentages, charts) and inferential statistics (Chi-square to test associations).

Qualitative data (from interviews) will be analyzed through thematic content analysis, identifying
patterns, themes, and recurring narratives.
