THE OAKWOOD MONTESSORI SCHOOL
WEEKLY LESSON PLAN
CHRISTMAS TERM
Week: 10
Date: Monday 11 - Friday 15 November, 2024
CLASS: Year 6
SUBJECT: Mathematics
TOPIC: Approximation and Estimation
OBJECTIVE: By the end of this lesson, students should be able to:
● Approximate numbers to given number of significant figures
● Find estimated values in problem solving.
MATERIALS NEEDED: Unit number line, video on the rules of significant figures and
rounding, Inside out Math Textbook 6

PROCEDURE
LESSON 1: SIGNIFICANT FIGURES (40 Minutes)
STARTER
● Take quizizz on rounding – to specific place value and decimal places.
● Introduce the topic and state the objectives clearly.
● Play the video on rules of significant numbers. Tell the pupils to pay attention to the
rules.
● Ask the students to state the rules for identifying significant figures in a number
1. All non-zero digits are significant.
2. All zeros between non-zero digits are significant.
3. All trailing zeros in decimal numbers are significant.
4. All leading zeros are not significant.
5. All trailing zeros in whole numbers are not significant.
● Present the practice page on the textbook and have them take turns to tell the class the
number of significant figures in given numbers.
● Give them independent practice tasks for evaluation.
● Review the objective of the lesson.
LESSON 2: ESTIMATION (40 Minutes)
● Welcome the students to the second round of the lesson.
● Starter : Fill a jar with coins. Ask the pupils to estimate the number of coins in the jar.
● Give a quick task on Approximation to revise the last lesson.
● State the objectives of the lesson clearly.
● Today, we will be using our knowledge of rounding to estimate amounts.
● Explain the concept and method of solving problems by estimation.
● Solve a few examples on estimation with the class.
● Relate the concept of estimation to a real life example.
● Give them independent tasks for evaluation.
● Review the objectives and conclude the lesson.
● Assign more tasks for practice.
