Question 1: Answer all the questions. (10 Marks)


Rahim and Karim are two friends who are both fascinated by circuits. They have built a [6+4]
circuit as shown in Figure 1. During a discussion, Rahim claims that the present CO3
condition at terminal a-b will ensure maximum power transfer. However, Karim
disagrees, stating that the resistance between terminals a-b should equal the Thevenin
equivalent resistance of the circuit for maximum power transfer. Answer the following
questions:
i) Determine the Thevenin equivalent circuit and current through the 8Ω
resistor.
ii) Explain who is correct between Rahim and Karim. Also, determine the
maximum power.

In ‘Figure 3’, the current of the current source is is(t) = 10cos(4t + 30°) A and the other [4+4+
marked current is i(t) = 4.53cos(4t - 102.1°) A. In the circuit, Z is an unknown 2+2]
impedance. Observe the circuit shown in Figure 3 and answer the following questions: CO4
i) Determine the voltage across the capacitor 0.125F and then determine current

through it.
ii) Determine the current through the ‘Z’ using KCL at node ‘a’.
iii) Keeping in mind that ‘Z’ is parallel to 0.125F capacitor, determine the value of ‘Z’
using ohm’s law.
iv) Find the equivalent impedance, Zeq, with respect to the terminals ‘a’ and ‘b’.

i) Find the RMS value, IRMS of the current waveform shown in Figure 4(a). [4+4]
ii) Use the RMS value from (i) as the maximum amplitude of the sinusoidal CO4
current source in the circuit shown in Figure 4(b). Determine io and the
average real power absorbed by the 3-ohm resistor using the Current
Division Rule (CDR), assuming an angular frequency of 100 rad/s.

4. (a) Find Thevenin Equivalent circuit across a − b terminals. [4]


(b) Which resistance must be connected across a − b terminals to ensure maximum power
delivery from the source? Mathematically show that resistance of value more or less than
the selected value will give less power. [4]

to the 8-ohm resistor.

i) Determine the Thevenin equivalent circuit at the a-b terminal. 3]
ii) Suppose, your friend suggests that if you connect a 20V-40W bulb across a-b terminal, CO3
then you will get maximum bulb intensity. Is he right? If not, then calculate the resistance
of the bulb that would get maximum intensity.
iii) Determine the maximum power delivered to the bulb that would be connected across
the a-b terminal.

For the circuit shown in Figure 3, where 𝑣𝑔 (𝑡) = 247.49 cos (1000t + π/4) [3+3+
i) Determine the total impedance of the circuit. 2+2]
ii) Determine the current through the 100Ω resistor using the current division rule. CO4
iii) Determine the voltage 𝑉𝑎𝑏 (𝑡) using VDR.
iv) Determine by how much degree the voltage, 𝑉𝑎𝑏 (𝑡) is leading the source voltage, 𝑣𝑔 (𝑡).

Answer the following questions for the circuit shown in Figure 4 (a-b): [5+5]
i) Calculate the rms value of the periodic voltage shown in Figure 4a. CO4

ii) Determine the equivalent impedance of this circuit.

When the voltage waveform of Figure 4(a) is applied across a 2-Ω resistor, the average [3+5+
power absorbed by the resistor is 4.267 W. Another AC circuit is shown in Figure 4(b). 5]
Now answer the following questions: CO4
i) Find the rms value, 𝑣𝑟𝑚𝑠 of the voltage waveform shown in Figure 4(a).
ii) Find the peak value of the voltage waveform, 𝑉𝑚 .
iii) Use this rms [from (i)] value as the maximum amplitude of the sinusoidal
voltage source in the circuit shown in Figure 4(b). Determine 𝐼0 (𝑡), and average
power absorbed by the 30Ω resistor in the circuit.
