Q1.
(i) State Ohm’s law.
(ii) State and explain Kirchhoff’s voltage and current laws.
(iii) State Thevenin, Norton, and Superposition Theorems. Take suitable examples and
explain the steps to apply Thevenin’s theorem for a resistive circuit with a constant
DC voltage source.

(iv) Find the branch current in R2.

(v) In the resistance circuit of Figure. Find a) Ix if I1= 12mA, b) Ix if I2= 20mA, c) I1 if Ix=
6mA, d) Ix if Is= 45mA.

Ans: a) Ix= 4mA, b) Ix = 10mA, c) I1 = 18mA, d) Ix = 5mA.

(vi) In the circuit shown in Fig., find Is. For I=10A. (Use the superposition Theorem)

(vii) For the circuit of Fig., determine the voltage across the 20 Ω resistance.

Derive the equations of capacitor voltage and circuit current in a series R-C circuit
connected to a DC supply through a switch. Assume that the switch is initially open,
and it is closed at time t=0 seconds.

(g) Prove the equation below for a series R L circuit.

Where = time constant= L/R.

(h) For the circuit shown in Fig.6, find the current IL through 6Ω using Thevenin’s
theorem. Verify your answer using Norton’s Theorem.

(i) Consider the circuit shown in the Figure below. Reduce the portion of the circuit to
the left of terminals a–b to (a) a Thevenin equivalent and (b) a Norton equivalent.
Find the current through R = 16 Ω.

Ans: Rth=16 Ω, Isc= 8Amp, Voc=128V, I =4A.


(ii) Obtain the value of Norton’s equivalent current and Norton’s equivalent resistance
for the network shown in the following figure.

Ans: Rth=7.8 Ω, Isc= 87mA,
