Light
Very Short Answer Type Questions:
1. What is meant by light?
A. Light is an invisible form of energy which causes in us the
sensation of vision.
2. Is a real image always erect?
A. No, a real image is always inverted.
3. What is a spherical mirror?
A. A spherical mirror is a mirror which can be considered to be a
part of a sphere.
4. What is meant by rectilinear propagation of light?
A. The property of light traveling in a straight line is called
rectilinear propagation of light.
5. State one use of a plain mirror
A. a plain mirror is used as a looking mirror.
6. Is a virtual image always inverted?
A. No, a virtual image is always erect but literally inverted.
Short Answer Type Questions:
1. State three important characteristics of an image formed in a
plane mirror.
A. The image formed in a plane mirror is erect, virtual and
laterally inverted.
2. Distinguish between real and virtual images.
A.
3. Give one use each of a concave and convex mirror.
A. Concave mirror is used as a shaving mirror and a makeup
mirror.
Convex mirror is used as rear-view mirror in vehicles.
4. Which type of mirror can form a real image?
A. Concave mirror forms a real image.
5. What are lenses? Name the two kinds of lenses.
A. Transparent materials having polished curved surfaces are
called lenses.
Lenses are of two types
a. Convex Lens
b. Concave Lens
6. State two differences between a convex and a concave lens.
Convex lens Concave lens
1. It is thicker in the middle and 1. It is thicker at the edges and
thinner at the edges thinner in the middle
2. Convex lens is called as a 2. Concave lens is called as a
converging lens diverging lens
3. Forms a magnified image 3. Forms a diminished image
when lens is held close to the when lens is held close to the
object object
Long Answer type questions:
1. With the help of an experiment, prove that light always
travels in straight line.
A. Take a lighted candle and place it on a table. first look at the
candle flame through a straight pipe. The flame can be seen. Now
look at the candle flame through a bent pipe. the flame will not be
visible through the bent pipe. This shows that light travels in a
straight line.
2. You are provided with a (a) plane mirror (b) concave mirror (c)
convex mirror. How will you distinguish between them without
touching?
A. If you look into a plane mirror, you will find your image size
same that of you size.
If you look into a concave mirror, you can see and enlarged image
when placed close and can see an inverted image when kept
away.
If you look into convex mirror, you can see image as small and
erect.
3. How will you prove that light consists of seven colors using
Newtons color disc?
A. Take a disc and paint the seven colors of white light in seven
sectors in the order of Violet, Indigo, blue, green, Yellow, Orange
and Red (VIBGYOR).
Make two holes in the disc and pass a long thread from one hole
and then through the other hole, such that about 20 cm of the
thread is on either side of the holes.
Tie the ends, Place one end of the thread on the middle finger of
the left-hand and the other end on the middle finger of the right-
hand. Now move the hands closer and rotate the disc in clockwise
direction so that the thread on either side gets twinned. Next,
stretch the hands and allow the thread to unwind and rotate the
disc rapidly in the anticlockwise direction. We will observe that
the seven colors painted on the disc disappear and it will appear
white.
4. Distinguish between reflection and refraction.
A. When a ray of light travelling from one medium to another is
returned to the first medium with a change in angle, it is called
reflection of light.
When a ray of light travelling from one medium to another passes
through the second medium with a change in angle, it is called
refraction of light.
5. What is a virtual image? Give one situation where a virtual
image is formed?
A. The images which cannot be obtained or formed on a screen
are known as virtual images. The image formed by a plane mirror
is a virtual image. It cannot be captured on a screen.
