Shallow Foundation Examples

The document presents example problems related to the calculation of ultimate bearing capacity for continuous footings using given parameters such as width, depth, soil unit weight, and cohesion. It demonstrates the application of Terzaghi's analysis to compute the ultimate bearing capacity and permissible load per unit meter run of footing. The results indicate specific values for ultimate bearing capacity based on the provided data.

Shallow Foundation - Example Problems

Given data:
Continuous footing
B = 2.5 m, D = 1.5 m, qu = 150 kN/m², C = qu/2 = 150/2 = 75 kN/m²
γ = 16 kN/m³

Required:
Ultimate bearing capacity of the continuous footing, qf = ?

Solution:
Assume general shear failure,
qf = C Nc + γ D Nq + 0.5 γ B Nγ

From Table 2.3:

ϕ = 0°, Nc = 5.7, Nq = 1, Nγ = 0

qf = (75 × 5.7) + (16 × 1.5 × 1) + (0.5 × 16 × 2.5 × 0)

qf = 427.5 + 24 + 0 = 451.5 kN/m²

Result:
Ultimate bearing capacity of the continuous footing,
qf = 451.5 kN/m²

Example: 21
Compute the SBC of a continuous footing 1.8 m wide and located at a depth of 1.2 m below
ground level in a soil with unit weight γ = 20 kN/m³ and C = 20 kN/m², ϕ = 20°
(Assume FOS as 2.5, Nc = 17.7, Nq = 7.4, Nγ = 5).
Use Terzaghi’s analysis. What is the permissible load per unit metre run of footing?
