FBD Without Friction

The document outlines various physics problems involving free body diagrams and forces acting on blocks and masses without friction. It includes scenarios such as a block on a table being pulled at an angle, connected blocks on a frictionless surface, and masses over a pulley system. Additionally, it provides solutions for tension and acceleration in different setups.

Free Body Diagrams (without friction) 14th May 2025

1. A block of mass 5 kg is placed on a smooth horizontal table and is pulled by

a force of 10 N at an angle of 30° above the horizontal. Draw the free body
diagram of the block.

2. Two blocks of masses 4 kg and 6 kg are connected by a light string and

placed on a frictionless horizontal surface. A force of 20 N is applied on the
4 kg block. Draw the free body diagram for each block.

3. A block of mass 2 kg is placed on a smooth inclined plane inclined at 30° to

the horizontal. Draw the free body diagram of the block, and show all forces
acting on it.

4. A horizontal force of 600N pulls two masses 10 kg and 20 kg lying on a

frictionless table and connected by a light string. What is the tension in the
string? Does the answer depend on which mass end the pull is applied? If
so, find the tension. ( Ans: 400 N ; 200N)
5. Two masses, 3 kg and 2 kg, are connected over a frictionless pulley. Draw
the free body diagrams for each mass assuming the string and pulley are
ideal.

6. Two masses m1 = 12 kg and m2 = 8 kg are connected at the two ends of

light, inextensible string passing over a light, frictionless pulley as shown.
Find the acceleration of the masses and the tension in the string when the

masses are released. (Take g = 10 m/s2) ( 2 m/s2 ; 96 N)

7. Analyze the given diagram carefully and find the following: (Take g = 10
m/s2)
[5]

i) What is the acceleration of the system when the masses are released?
ii) What will be the tension of the bodies during the motion of the bodies?
