Mathema'css Department Project Week (2024_2025)

Year 9 – TIS Ms Ganaswaran

TITTLE Surface Area and volume of Polygons Through 3D model

construc@on
OBJECTIVE 1. To explore the concept of surface area and volume
through the construc?on of physical models of
polygonal shapes
2. To construct physical models of 3D solids such as
prisms, pyramids and cubes to study how the surface
area can be calculated.
WEEK WEEK 7
MATERIALS (A) Prepared by the students
• Colour markers, pens, pencils
• Cardboard
• Colour papers
• Glues, scissor
DETAILS 1. In group of 4-5, students build at least 7 3D
models
Examples:
- Cuboid
- Rectangular prism
- Triangular prism
- Square-based pyramid
- Hexagonal prism
- Trapezoidal prism
- Cylinder

2. Draw the model as a net using precise

measurement, cut out from cardboard, and then
fold and glue it to form the 3D solid.

Example:
(A) Measure and draw the square base
of the pyramid
(B) Draw 4 symmetrical lines that start
on each side of the square.

(C) Connect each line to the adjacent

corners.

(D) Cut out the pyramid carefully.

(E) Fold each face of the pyramid
towards the middle

(F) Tape the edges of the pyramid’s

face where they meet.

3. Label the formula of volume and surface area

crea?vely.
4. Organize the constructed models on a display
cardboard for presenta?on with innova?ve
ideas.
