PSet9 1

The assignment focuses on fluid dynamics, specifically analyzing a uni-directional flow in a channel with a moving upper plate and stationary lower plate. It includes calculations of velocity fields, relations between pressure gradients and flow rates, and the derivation of shear stress evolution equations for an impulsively started plate with time-varying velocity. Students are required to sketch velocity profiles and stress profiles based on the given conditions.

Assignment IX

EN.530.621 : Fluid Dynamics I

Due at 4:30PM on Monday, Nov 18, 2024 by class

1. Consider a uni-directinoal flow u(y) in a channel with height h imposed by a constant pressure gradient
∂x p. The upper plate is moving with constant velocity U , and the lower plate is stationary.
(a) Calculate the velocity field. Sketch the velocity profile for positive, zero and negative pressure gradients.
(b) What is the relation between U and ∂x p such that the net flow rate through the channel vanishes? Sketch
the flow associated velocity profile.

2. Consider the Stokes’ first problem of an impulsively started plate, but allow the plate velocity to be an
arbitrary function of time, U (t).

(a) Write down the simplified streamwise momentum equation that governs the velocity field u(y, t).
(b) Now we want to derive an evolution equation for the shear stress τ . To do so, we start from the
definition of the shear stress, τ ≡ µ(∂u/∂y). We then take the derivative of the definition of τ with
respect to time, and replace (∂u/∂t) with the simplified momentum equation from (a).
(c) Compare the resulting equation for ∂τ /∂t to the streamwise momentum equation for u(y, t). This
comparison is useful because we can now easily find the solution to the evolution equation for τ when
the wall stress τ (y = 0) is constant. So let’s suppose that the plate is moved in such a way as to
produce a constant shear stress at the wall. What is the stress profile?

(d) Now to find the velocity profile, we can integrate the stress. So what is the velocity profile? And what
is the wall velocity as a function of time?
