Class 9 Physics - Chapter 1: Motion (Hybrid Module)

Key Concepts

1. Rest and Motion:

- Rest: An object is said to be at rest if it does not change its position with respect to its surroundings.

- Motion: An object is said to be in motion if it changes its position with respect to its surroundings.

2. Types of Motion:

- Translational (Rectilinear/Curvilinear), Rotational, Oscillatory

3. Distance vs Displacement:

- Distance: Total path covered (Scalar)

- Displacement: Shortest path between initial and final position (Vector)

4. Speed and Velocity:

- Speed = Distance / Time

- Velocity = Displacement / Time

5. Acceleration (a):

- a = (v - u)/t, where v = final velocity, u = initial velocity, t = time

6. Equations of Motion (Uniform Acceleration Only):

- v = u + at

- s = ut + 1/2 at²

- v² = u² + 2as

Graphical Representations

1. Distance-Time Graph:

- Straight line: Uniform motion

- Curved line: Non-uniform motion

Class 9 Physics - Chapter 1: Motion (Hybrid Module)

2. Velocity-Time Graph:

- Slope = Acceleration

- Area under the graph = Displacement

Solved Example

Q. A car starts from rest and reaches a speed of 20 m/s in 4 seconds. Find acceleration and distance

covered.

Sol:

- Initial velocity (u) = 0, Final velocity (v) = 20 m/s, Time (t) = 4 s

- Acceleration a = (v - u)/t = (20 - 0)/4 = 5 m/s²

- Distance s = ut + 1/2 at² = 0 + 1/2 × 5 × 4² = 40 m

Practice Questions

Level 1:

1. Define acceleration.

2. What is the SI unit of velocity?

Level 2:

1. An object moves 10 m east and then 5 m west. Find its displacement.

2. A car accelerates from 10 m/s to 30 m/s in 4 seconds. Find acceleration.

Assertion/Reason:

A: Displacement can be zero even if distance is not.

R: Displacement is a vector quantity and distance is scalar.
