What Is Geometry

Geometry is a branch of mathematics focused on the study of shapes, sizes, positions, angles, and dimensions of objects and spaces. It encompasses various topics including basic shapes, points, lines, angles, triangles, perimeter, area, volume, and transformations. Geometry plays a crucial role in fields such as architecture, art, navigation, robotics, and everyday life.

Geometry

Geometry is the branch of mathematics that studies shapes, sizes,

positions, angles, and dimensions of objects and spaces.

It helps us understand the physical space around us—everything from

simple shapes like triangles and circles to complex 3D structures like
buildings and planets.

📘 Definition of Geometry

Geometry comes from the Greek words "geo" (earth) and "metron"
(measure), so it literally means "earth measurement."

It's used to:

 Measure lengths, areas, and volumes

 Understand angles and shapes

 Study properties of space and position

🔷 Main Topics in Geometry

1. Basic Shapes

 2D (Flat) Shapes: square, rectangle, triangle, circle, etc.

 3D (Solid) Shapes: cube, sphere, cone, cylinder, pyramid, etc.

2. Points, Lines, and Angles

 Point: a position in space (has no size)

 Line: straight and extends forever in both directions

 Angle: formed when two lines meet at a point

Types of angles:

 Acute (< 90°)

 Right (= 90°)

 Obtuse (> 90° and < 180°)

 Straight (= 180°)

3. Triangles and Their Types

 By sides: Equilateral, Isosceles, Scalene

 By angles: Acute, Right, Obtuse

4. Perimeter, Area, and Volume

 Perimeter: Distance around a shape

 Area: Space inside a 2D shape

 Volume: Space inside a 3D object

Examples:

 Area of rectangle = length × width

 Volume of cube = side³

5. Transformations

 Moving or changing shapes:

o Translation (sliding)

o Rotation (turning)

o Reflection (flipping)

o Scaling (resizing)

🧠 Why Geometry Matters

Geometry is used in:

 Architecture & engineering (designing buildings, bridges)

 Art & design (symmetry, perspective)

 Navigation & mapping

 Robotics & computer graphics

 Everyday life (e.g., arranging furniture, cutting fabric)

✅ Example Problems
1. What is the area of a triangle with base 6 cm and height 4 cm?
→ Area = ½ × base × height = ½ × 6 × 4 = 12 cm²

2. A square has side length 5 cm. What is its perimeter?

→ Perimeter = 4 × side = 4 × 5 = 20 cm

3. What type of angle is 120°?

→ Obtuse
