Study Material: Introduction to Trigonometry (Mathematics)
Trigonometry is a branch of mathematics that studies the relationships between angles
and sides in right-angled triangles. The core functions—sine (sin), cosine (cos), and tangent
(tan)—are defined using the ratios of the sides of a right triangle. For a given angle θ in a
right triangle:
• sin(θ) = opposite / hypotenuse
• cos(θ) = adjacent / hypotenuse
• tan(θ) = opposite / adjacent
These functions are used to solve problems involving unknown sides or angles of
triangles. Trigonometry is also fundamental in wave theory, engineering,
astronomy, and physics. The unit circle, measured in radians, expands these
definitions to all real numbers, enabling the study of periodic functions. Key
identities such as sin²θ + cos²θ = 1 and the Pythagorean identity are used in
simplifying and solving trigonometric equations.
