FOREWORD

Infrastructure has been defined as defined as the basic physical and organisational structures and
facilities (such as buildings, roads, power supplies, and so on) needed for the operation of a
society or enterprise. Infrastructure has been found to be of great importance towards the growth
and development of a nation’s economy, hence there is need for effective infrastructure planning
and management. Infrastructure planning and management involves the systematic process of
identifying, designing, constructing, operating, and maintaining physical assets and systems that
support economic, social, and environmental needs. It encompasses various sectors such as
transportation, energy, water supply, telecommunications, and waste management.

With this book, Dr. A. O. Familusi has found a need to address the critical relevance of
infrastructure planning and management towards the achievement of Sustainable Development
Goal 9 – Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure. In academic and professional syllabi, this book
is one of the few books that have been written to be of great benefits to lecturers, students,
researchers and professionals involved in the fields of engineering infrastructure planning and
management. This book has twelve chapters dealing with various concepts having to do with
importance of infrastructure planning and management, factors affecting infrastructure, asset
management, infrastructure regulatory agencies, development of smart cities, few calculations on
infrastructural planning and management, and so on.

I am very confident that this book will be very useful for lecturers and students (in polytechnics,
universities and colleges), researchers and professionals involved in the field of engineering
infrastructure planning and management. Therefore, I have no hesitation in my mind in
recommending this book accordingly.

PREFACE

The economic stability of any nation greatly depends on the level of its infrastructure
development. It is also important to note that if there is no adequate planning and management of
available infrastructure in a particular nation, the economy of such nation will be in a shambles.

This book has been written with the aim of getting the readers intimated with the concepts of
infrastructure planning and management. The author (after having taught the course
“Infrastructure Planning and Management” for one and a half decades) opines that this book
shall be useful for students and lecturers (in polytechnics and universities) involved in the field
of infrastructure planning and management.

The book has been structured into twelve chapters with sections and sub-sections that highlight
extensively the concepts of infrastructure planning and management. Consequently, the author
has no doubt that this book will be an invaluable resource to both students and lecturers involved
in the field of infrastructure planning and management.
