to strengthen technical skills, gain hands-on experience, deepen expertise, and contribute to impactful projects.

RESEARCH EXPERIENCE
MITACS Globalink Research Intern Jun 2024-Aug 2024
École de technologie supérieure, Montréal
Title: Modelling of Cold Expansion Process: A Finite Element Approach
Developed a finite element (FE) model consisting of a thin rectangular plate with hole at the center and
mandrels with different inferences.
Aluminum 7075 alloy was assigned as the material for the rectangular plate, on which the expansion
process was simulated by loading and unloading the mandrel.
Mechanical parameters like radial, hoop and tangential stress were calculated across the length of the
thin rectangular plate.
The results were compared with analytical solutions to validate the developed FE model.

Research Intern Aug 2023-Dec 2023

Collaborative program in VIT with MCW,USA
Title : Finite Element Modelling and Validation of T1-T2 Functional Spine Unit: A Developmental Study
Conducted an extensive literature survey for understanding the morphometric parameters involved in the
thoracic spine and the geometric data available in the literature.
Vertebrae and their ligaments were modeled with reference with literature and protocols provided by
Medical College of Wisconsin.
Used manual morphing based meshing techniques to model the thoracic vertebra T2.
The finite element model was simulated under physiological loading of 5Nm (flexion, extension, lateral
bending and axial rotation).
The range of motion (ROM) at the functional spine unit T1-T2 was calculated and the ROM was validated
against experimental corridors.

RESEARCH PROJECTS
Title: Influence of Anterior and Posterior Fusion Surgeries on the Cervicothoracic Junction : A FEM Study
Modified validated C2-T2 and C2-T1 finite element models to simulate multi-level anterior cervical
discectomy and fusion (ACDF) and posterior cervical laminectomy and fusion (PCLF), assessing their
impact on the biomechanics of cervicothoracic junction (C7T1).
Fusion was modeled from C4-C7, with simulations performed under 2Nm physiological loading (flexion
and extension); range of motion (ROM) was analyzed in both preoperative and postoperative conditions.
ACDF: Significant ROM reduction at fused levels; minimal increase at adjacent segments.
PCLF: Significant ROM increase at adjacent segments compared to the intact model.
C2-T2 model showed greater ROM changes at C7T1 in extension, making it a better choice than C2-T1 for
studying PCLF effects.
Title: Is there Any Change in the C2-T1 Cervical Spine Kinematics with Addition of T2 Vertebra? A FEM study
Developed and validated a C2-T2 finite element model to analyze boundary condition effects on C7T1 and
other segments.
Simulated under 2Nm physiological loading (flexion and extension) with lowest vertebra (T2) constrained.
ROM was calculated for each functional spine unit and compared to the C2-T1 model in the intact state.
C2-T2 model showed minimal ROM differences (±4% in flexion, ±7% in extension) compared to C2-T1.
The ROM variation quantified the effect of shifting the inferior boundary to T2 under quasi-static loading.

Title: Effectiveness of a Stand-alone Cage in a Cervical Spine – A Finite Element Study

Modified a validated C2-T1 finite element model to assess the impact of a stand-alone cage in single-level
anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) on adjacent segments.
Simulated under 2Nm physiological loading (flexion and extension) with T1 constrained as the inferior
boundary.
ROM and disc pressure (DP) were calculated for each functional spine unit (FSU) before and after surgery.
Operated FSU: Significant ROM reduction post-surgery.
Adjacent levels: Minimal DP changes, suggesting the stand-alone cage may not promote adjacent
segment degeneration.
