Analytical Essay

Structure
Introduction
o Question – have you rephrased the question/prompt in your own
words?
o Overview – have you given an overview of your main ideas?
o Title ­– have you introduced the title of the text? (Spelled and
capitalised correctly?)
o Author – have you introduced the name of the author? (Spelled and
capitalised correctly?)
o Contention/Thesis statement – have you clearly stated your
contention? (position on the prompt?)

Body Paragraphs (x3)


o Do you have a Topic Sentence? Does it have a subject and a controlling
idea?
o Do you have three supporting details? Are they different ideas and do
they support your topic sentence?
o Do you have pieces of evidence from the text - one for each supporting
detail. These can be quotes, themes, symbols etc. You need to show how
your supporting details link to the topic sentence.
o Have you analysed how your evidence clearly links to the topic
sentence (idea of the paragraph)
o Do you have a linking sentence? Needs to strongly restate the idea from
your topic sentence in new words and sum up the supporting details in
new words. Can link forward to the next idea - needs to be cohesive.

Conclusion
Have you:
o Restated your contention in new words
o Summarised your main ideas
o Finished with a strong statement to conclude.
