📘 Topic: Direction Sense

✅ Basic Concepts
• The four main directions: North, South, East, West.

• The four cardinal directions: North-East (NE), North-West (NW), South-East (SE), South-
West (SW).

• Right turn means a 90° clockwise turn.

• Left turn means a 90° anti-clockwise turn.

• Facing North: right is East, left is West.

• Facing East: right is South, left is North.

• Use the Pythagoras theorem for shortest distance: √(x² + y²).

• Angle of turns are usually 90° or 180°.

• Movement-based questions often form geometrical patterns.

⚡ Tricks & Tips

• Draw diagrams to track movements.

• Use coordinate system (+x = East, +y = North).

• Right turn = clockwise, Left turn = anti-clockwise.

• Final direction is based on last turn.

• For shortest distance: apply Pythagoras when movement is in two directions.

📝 20 Practice Questions on Direction Sense

 Q1. A person walks 5 km North, then turns right and walks 3 km. Which direction is he
facing now?

Right from North = East.

 Q2. Ram walks 4 km East, then turns left and walks 3 km. Which direction is he facing?

Left from East = North.

 Q3. A person goes 3 km North, 4 km East. How far is he from starting point?
Distance = √(3² + 4²) = √25 = 5 km.

 Q4. A person goes 10 km North, turns right and 5 km, again right and 10 km. Final
direction?

Final turn = right from East = South.

 Q5. A person walks 6 km West, turns left and walks 4 km. Final direction?

Left from West = South.

 Q6. A man walks 10 km North, then 6 km South. Net distance from start?

10 − 6 = 4 km North.

 Q7. A girl goes 5 km East, then 5 km North. How far from start?

Distance = √(5² + 5²) = √50 ≈ 7.07 km.

 Q8. A person goes North, right, right again. What is final direction?

North → East → South.

 Q9. Facing West, turn right, walk, turn left, walk. Final direction?

West → North → West.

 Q10. A man walks 3 km East, 4 km South. Shortest distance from start?

√(3² + 4²) = 5 km.

 Q11. If a person is facing South, then turns left, what is new direction?

Left from South = East.

 Q12. A person walks 6 km South, turns right, walks 8 km. Final direction?

Right from South = West.

 Q13. If a person walks 4 km East, then 3 km North, how far is he from start?

√(4² + 3²) = 5 km.

 Q14. A person moves 4 km North, 4 km East, 4 km South. Final position from start?

Net East = 4 km, Net North = 0 → 4 km East.

 Q15. Facing North, person turns right, right again, left. Final direction?

North → East → South → East.

 Q16. A person walks 6 km North, 8 km West. How far from start?

√(6² + 8²) = √100 = 10 km.

 Q17. A person walks 10 km North, 10 km East, 10 km South. Final position?

Net East = 10 km, Net North = 0 → 10 km East.

 Q18. A boy walks 7 km West, then 3 km South. Final direction from start?

South-West.

 Q19. A person starts facing East, turns left, left, left. Final direction?

East → North → West → South.

 Q20. A person travels 8 km North, 6 km East. How far from start?

√(8² + 6²) = √100 = 10 km.
