Emerging Technologies
Instructions: Gather information and analyze the characteristics of the assigned technology
to your group. Then, provide a conclusion on whether the technology should be considered
as an emerging technology or not. Lastly, provide explanation to each characteristic of the
technology.
Genetic Engineering
Radical Novelty It includes groundbreaking innovations like
prime and base editing, gene drives,
synthetic chromosomes, and CRISPR
advancements, enabling unprecedented
precision, new therapeutic possibilities, and
the creation of custom organisms.
Relatively fast growth In genetic engineering, it refers to the rapid
advancements and wide spread adoption of
technologies like CRISPR-Cas9, gene
editing, and synthetic biology, which have
quickly moved from research labs to
practical applications in medicine,
agriculture, and biotechnology, driving
significant progress in areas such as disease
treatment, crop improvement, and industrial
bioprocessing.
Coherence Is ensured by its scientific principles,
advanced techniques, ethical guidelines,
practical applications, and integration with
various scientific fields.
Prominent Impact It has revolutionized fields like medicine,
agriculture, and industry by enabling precise
genetic modifications with significant
benefits, while also raising important ethical
and environmental concerns.
Uncertainty and ambiguity It also raises a number of serious ethical
questions. To fully realize the benefits of
genetic engineering, innovation must be
balanced with caution. To reduce risks,
continued research, clear legal frameworks,
and open communication with the public are
all necessary. By carefully addressing these
unknowns, we can make sure that genetic
engineering minimizes potential risks while
increasing beneficial effects on society.

CONCLUSION
In conclusion, the genetic engineering can pose both potential benefits as well as potential risks
to the public health. In the agriculture, environmental management, and medicine, the public
health implications of genetic engineering are complex, both scientifically and ethically. While
the genetic engineering can help to promote health and prevent illness by increasing the quality
and quantity of food, by cleaning up toxic environments, and by alleviating human health
problems into the future. It may also threaten human health by compromising the food supply.
These risk and benefit issues are important, but so too are less consequentialist ethical
considerations that focus on equity and justice, research priority setting and opportunity costs,
dual use of beneficial technologies, the social implications of humans eugenics and
enhancement, animal warfare, the sanctity of nature, and scientific hubris.
