MODULE 3 Lesson 3
I. Bridging the Gaps

The development of Communication skills is very significant

when it comes to building relationship with others. It is indeed
necessary to acquire different communicative styles to effectively
convey one’s message.

According to Joos ( 1968), there are five speech styles.

These are (1) intimate, (2) casual, (3) consultative, (4)formal (5)
frozen. Each style dictates what appropriate language or
vocabulary should be used or observed.

In the previous lesson, you have learned that in communicating with others, the
language you choose and use depends on your relationship with the person/s.

In this module you will be learning another speech style that is less intimate and
more relaxed and can be used in your day-to-day conversation with others.

Alice Oh, yeah. I think it went well. I don’t know if I got the scholarship, but they said
they would call in a few days.
Ram: Well, I’m sure you did great. I deserve a burger treat. (laughs)
