CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTIO
Background of the Study
Agriculture plays a vital role in sustaining human life and
contributes significantly to the economy of many countries. Fruit
harvesting, a critical aspect of agricultural practices, has historically
been labor-intensive and reliant on manual techniques (Mana,
2024). Traditional methods, while effective to some extent, often
present limitations such as inefficiency, high labor costs, and risks
of damage to both the fruit and the plant. As global demand for
fresh produce continues to rise, there is an increasing need for
innovative tools and technologies to improve harvesting efficiency,
reduce waste, and enhance worker safety (Mana, 2024).
The introduction of mechanized harvesting solutions has
addressed some of these challenges, but existing models are often
limited by their design, cost, or functionality (Mana, 2024). Many
conventional harvesters are tailored to specific types of fruits or
trees, making them unsuitable for diverse agricultural environments
(Mana, 2024).
CAMIGUIN POLYTECHNIC STATE COLLEGE 2
INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY

Traditional fruit harvester can damage the fruit badly specially
if the workers are not careful when using the traditional fruit
harvester that can lead to lower market value, and traditional fruit
harvester can lead to the workers strain or injury specially when the
fruit is high that the worker will require to climb just to harvest. The
purpose of this study is to minimize the damage of the fruit and to
adopt, user-friendly, efficient, tool to harvest fruits with a minimal
damage.
Statement of the Problem
These study will answer the following question;
1. What is the design of the Multi-Purpose Fruit Harvester
Model?
2. What are the materials to be used for Multi-Purpose
Fruit Harvester Model?
3. What is the performance evaluation of the Multi-Purpose
Fruit Harvester Model?

CHAPTER 2
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
This portion consists of studies and literature's conducted by
previous researchers and are herein reviewed for the purpose of
enriching the present investigation.
Manual harvesting, which remains the predominant method
in most orchards, is praised for its precision and selectivity (silwal
et al., 2017). however, it is labor-intensive and economically
unsustainable in large-scale farming (Bac et al., 2014). in contrast,
mechanical harvesters have been successfully implemented
incertain cropps such as olives and citrus, where bruising is less of
a concern. While effective in some contexts, mechanical systems
often lack the delicacy required for soft fruits (Zude et al., 2016).
Harvesting automation necessitates a careful balancing act
between maintaining produce quality and mechanical efficiency.
The mechanical "hands" of robotic systems, known as end
effectors, are essential to this procedure.
Davidson et al. (2017) investigated a range of end effector
designs, such as biomimetic mechanisms, soft pneumatic grippers,
and suction cups, emphasizing the significance of customizing
gripper features to the unique qualities of diverse fruit varieties.
Hemming,
CAMIGUIN POLYTECHNIC STATE COLLEGE 8
INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY
Balbagon, Mambajao, Camiguin
and van Henten (2014), robotic harvesting technology has made
significant strides, especially for high-value crops, but still faces
challenges related to crop detection, manipulation, and operational
efficiency in unstructured environments.Deep learning algorithms
have been utilized to increase the accuracy of fruit detection in
robotic harvesting systems in recent years. After reviewing many
deep learning-based methods, Chen et al. (2017) They significantly
improved fruit detection under various lighting and occlusion
conditions, showing strong potential for enhancing robotic accuracy
and adaptability.
A crucial component of contemporary harvesting systems is
the capacity to evaluate fruit quality without inflicting damage, in
addition to mechanical constraints. A promising non-destructive
technique for assessing the internal and external quality of
horticultural goods is hyperspectral imaging. Its ability to evaluate
fruit maturity, firmness, and flaws was noted by Zude et al. (2016),
making it a useful instrument for incorporation into automated
harvesting and sorting systems.
The development of automated harvesting systems still faces
significant obstacles in the form of precise fruit identification and
localization. An enhanced neural network model was presented by
CAMIGUIN POLYTECHNIC STATE COLLEGE 9
INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY
Balbagon, Mambajao, Camiguin
Kang and Chen (2020), which greatly improves fruit detection
and spatial localization accuracy in challenging field settings.
To improve robot performance for agricultural tasks, and
decrease its cost, the robot can be optimally designed for a specific
task in a specific working environment. By Bloch, V., Degani, A., &
Bechar, A. (2018) However, since the environment defines the
robot optimal kinematics, the environment itself should also be
optimised for optimal robot performance.
In recent years the horticultural industry has funded the research
and the development of novel fruit harvesting systems. Li, P., Lee,
S.-H., & Hsu, H.-Y. (2011) Conventional harvesting method is highly
labour intensive and inefficient in terms of both economy and time.
Human has long strived for mechanization in crop management
and harvest to reduce labor costs. Hua et al. (2019): The operation
of harvest usually occurs when a crop reaches its mature stage.
Harvesting a large hectarage of crop within a short period of time,
however, is difficult, labor-some, and time-consuming.

The design of the multipurpose fruit harvester model is illustrated in
the image above. This innovative tool was developed to simplify and
improve the efficiency of harvesting fruits, especially those located at
greater heights. At the core of its structure is a sturdy chrome pipe stick,
which acts as the main support and enables the user to reach high
branches with ease. To construct the tool, two half-length chrome pipes
were securely joined together, providing both the necessary length and
durability without compromising on portability or handling.
Attached to the upper end of the chrome pipe is a lightweight yet
durable basket net, which plays a vital role in collecting the fruit once it is
detached from the tree. This net ensures that the harvested fruit is gently
caught, minimizing bruising or damage during the process.
Complementing the basket net is a sharp harvester scythe, strategically
positioned to cut the fruit stems cleanly and efficiently. The scythe allows
for precise harvesting with minimal effort, even for tougher stems or
denser fruit clusters.
The entire assembly is held together with four bolts and four matching
bolt nuts, which ensure the stability and secure attachment of each
component. These mechanical fasteners contribute to the overall reliability
and robustness of the device during operation. With its practical
combination of a cutting tool and a collecting basket, mounted on a
lightweight yet strong extendable pole, the multipurpose fruit harvester
model represents a user-friendly and effective solution for safely
harvesting a variety of fruits from elevated positions.

Problem 2 What is the performance evaluation of the Multi-purpose
Fruit Harvester Model?
Figure 13. The comparison of the two materials chrome pipes and
galvanize iron (GI) pipe main foundation. we evaluate the materials used
for the project, we compared two options for the main foundation of the
multi-purpose fruit harvester model: the chrome pipe and the galvanized
iron (GI) pipe. First, we tested the weight of both materials. The chrome
pipe is lighter than the GI pipe. Although both materials are strong, the
difference in weight led us to choose the chrome pipe, as it makes the
project easier to use—especially for local farmers.
Figure 14. The two main harvester scythe. The main cutting tool we use to
harvest fruit is the harvester scythe, as it is more efficient than a regular knife.
The harvester scythe has a unique curved blade that can easily cut through fruit
stems and is sharper than a typical knife.
We use two varieties of harvester scythe: a smaller one for small fruits,
such as mangoes, and a larger one for cutting banana hearts, as it is
stronger and more durable than the smaller version. Additionally, the
harvester scythe is detachable, allowing us to easily switch between the
small and large blades.
Figure 15. The bolt and nut attached to the chrome pipe.
We also attach a bolt and nut to the chrome pipe. When the chrome
pipe is lifted, the bolt presses against it to prevent it from becoming loose.

To evaluate the performance of the Multipurpose Fruit Harvester
Model, the researchers distributed a structured questionnaire to 10
respondents. Table 5 shows that the gender distribution was equal, with
50% female respondents (5 individuals) and 50% male respondents (5
individuals). This balanced representation indicates that both men and
women were equally involved in assessing the model, contributing diverse
perspectives to the evaluation process.
Table 6 highlights the age distribution of the respondents. The dominant
age group was 45–54 years old, representing 50% of the participants,
which suggests that middle-aged individuals are particularly engaged in
the use or evaluation of the harvester. Additionally, 60% of the
respondents fell within the 18–34 age range, pointing to strong interest
from younger adults. This may reflect involvement from students, early-
career professionals, or individuals with a keen interest in innovation and
agricultural technology.
