WORKSHOP EXERCISE 2

Student’s Name: Matric No: 243071/____

Level/Class: ME I Practical Exercise: 2 Date: 05/05/2024
Title: Turning Operations in The Lathe
Aims: To acquaint the students with the knowledge of operating centre lathes to perform a variety of metal
cutting (turning) operations.
Objective: The objectives of the practical exercise are for the students to be able to use the knowledge
acquired/gained from the above to
i. Know and observe safety precautions
ii. Perform various metal cutting operations such as facing, plain turning, taper turning, drilling, boring,
chamfering, etc. to produce simple engineering parts in the lathe.
iii. Efficiently apply/use the skills acquired to produce precision machine components and spare parts for
industrial use.

Background Theory: Metal cutting operation on the lathe involves a process whereby the job is secure1y and rigid1y
held in the chuck or in between centres on the lathe and made the turn on its axis and a single-point cutting tool
is fed against it which removes metal from the workpiece in the form of chips.
Equipment/Tools/Material: Centre lathe, chuck key, spanner, soluble oil, HSS single-point cutting tool, right-hand
turning tool, parting-off tool, V-thread cutting tool, shoulder turning tool, facing tool, parting-off tool, steel rule, vernier
calliper, Ø25 X 100 mild steel rod, coolant

Step Turning and Taper Turning

PROCEDURE: Sequence of Operation: Centring →Facing →Plain turning →Chamfering →Step turning
→Grooving →Taper turning.
i. Hold the workpiece securely in a three-jaw chuck with sufficient and minimum overhang.
ii. Adjust the machine speed to run the job to the required cutting speed.
iii. Fix the cutting tool in the tool post with the tool cutting point set on the axis (centre) of the lathe so
that the axis of the job coincides with the lathe axis.
iv. Set the feed and depth of cut for the cutting tool.
v. Perform Facing operation from the centre of the job towards outwards or the circumference towards the
centre.
vi. Carry out Plain turning operation until the diameter of the workpiece reduces to Ø23.
vii. Check the dimensions by using vernier callipers.
viii. Chamfer the workpiece on the 23mm diameter surface.
ix. Reverse the workpiece in the chuck and face the workpiece to reduce the length of the workpiece to the
required dimensions.
x. Again, perform a plain turning operation until the diameter of the workpiece is reduced to Ø18 X 65.
xi. Using the V-cutting tool, perform the grooving operation according to the given dimensions and finish
the groove off using the parting-off tool.
xii. Swivel the compound slide to the required angle and perform a taper-turning operation by rotating the
compound slide wheel. The angle can be measured by using the formula: tan α =
𝐷−𝑑
2𝐿
xiii. Finally check the dimensions by using a vernier calliper.
Result/Conclusion:_______________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________________________
_________________________________________________________________
Study Guide Question:
1. Name the other methods of taper turning
2. With the aid of neat sketches, distinguish between orthogonal cutting tools and oblique cutting tools.
3. Define the following terms used in lathe operation.
i. Cutting speed
ii. Feed
iii. Depth of cut
CLOSING: (i) Return all the tools and equipment used to the store.
(ii) Clean and tidy up the machine (lathe)
(iii) Turn in your workpiece to the officer-in-charge
