Objective: To determine if design meets all API 6A stress requirments.
Design Standards and References:
1) ASME SECTION VIII DIVISION 1, APPENDIX 13
2) ASME SECTION VIII DIVISION 2, APPENDIX 4
3) API-6A, 20TH EDITION
Allowable Stresses:
API 6A and ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code. Section VIII. Division 2 are used for design
calculations for pressure equipment. Design allowable stresses shall be limited by the following
criteria:
St 0.83 Sy
2
Sm Sy
3
Sas 0.50 Sy Primary Membrane + Bending Stress = Sy
2
Sew Sy
3
Set Sy
Where:
Sy = Material minimum yield strength, psi
Sm = Stress intensity at rated working pressure, psi
St = Maximum allowable general primary membrane stress intensity at hydrostatic test
pressure,
psi.
Sas = Allowable shear stress, psi
Sew = Allowable distortion energy (Von Mises) Stress at working pressure, psi
Set = Allowable distortion energy (Von Mises) Stress at hydrostatic test pressure, psi
