Romans 2 Notes

Romans 2 discusses the root sin of judging and the hypocrisy that comes with it, warning that those who judge will also be judged. It emphasizes that justification comes through faith rather than works, highlighting a tension between Paul's teachings and those of James. The document also addresses the context of Paul's statements on justification, suggesting that they can be harmonized when understood within the framework of his overall argument.

Romans 2

1. Root sin of the righteous: judging

2. Problem: hypocrisy
3. Danger: the judger will be judged (Jesus-Mathew 7)
4. Distributed or reattributed justice – God repays according to each persons deads
5. Restraint in the execution of divine wrath-held off for now(2:4) Motivated by the
Lord’s kindness. Leads to repentance.
Theodicy = offering a defence of a justification for God addressing challenges regarding
God’s goodness
6. Knowing the law -

Justification by faith through works

Rom2: Rom3:
-by works -not by works
-“the doers of the law will be justified” -“a person is justified through faith”

-Rom 3: excludes work of Law from justification

-Rom 4:4-5 works don’t do it, faith does
-etc…………………….
-James seems to disagree with Paul

Ways of dealing with Contradiction

-Paul is not consistent and maybe had an unmeshed Theology
-Two statements can be harmonized (e.g. faith leads to works of the law, two are similar)
-Two statements need to be read in context; they come in a different place in Paul’s
argument –Rom2-hypothetical (just. By works/law) –Rom3-actual (just. By faith, not
law) (e.g. We cant be justified by law as humans, therefore Christ made it possible to be
justified through just faith.)

Observations:
1. The context of Paul’s statements
2. Justification: does not exactly say: not because of works
3. Obey truth, not law
4. Judgment is “according to the gospel”
5. Present versus future justification
