Safe Work Procedures


The safe work procedures adopted are as follows:

1.0 General Employee Duties & Responsibilities


 General Employee duties to wear and make use of all personal protective equipment issued by
the company while carrying out their duties.
 All equipment and tools must be kept in good and serviceable condition.
 Safety rules and safety precautions must be observed and abide by all times.
 Never endanger yourselves and others while carrying out your work. Employees must accept all
safety training willingly.
 Never play practical works while working and all jobs must be done safely and carefully.
 All injuries, accidents, or dangerous occurrences must be reported to your supervisors
immediately.

2.0 General Site Safety Rules


 Wear a safety helmet at all times when you are on the work site.
 When working at height, always wear your safety belt and secure it to a fixed anchorage.
 Wear protective footwear at all times. Do not wear slippers/sandals.
 Observe and comply with all warning signs and notices.
 Report all unsafe conditions to your supervisors.
 Do not remove barricades. If you need to do so, report to your supervisor.
 Do not consume drugs or any form of alcoholic drinks during working hours.
 Daily housekeeping to be done before the end of the workday.
 Use proper access to or from high area, no shortcut.

3.0 Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)


 Every worker on the construction site is to be provided with the following equipment, which
must be worn at all times or when necessary
 Safety Helmet
 Safety Shoes
 Safety Boots (with steel toe caps)
 High Visibility Vest
 Hand Gloves
 Other PPE to be issued where appropriate PPE are to be maintained in good condition

4.0 Housekeeping
 Housekeeping on the job is mandatory. Every employee must do his part to keep the job site
clean and safe at all times.
 Housekeeping programme is derived from the basis of Basic Management Concepts of Work
Efficiency and Safety. They are:
- Sort out and discard unnecessary items.
- Arrange remaining items in good order for use.
- Maintain good housekeeping.
- Housekeeping is to include all areas of the construction site.

5.0 Excavation

 Trenches, pits and excavation works must be in compliance with:
- Workplace Safety and Health Act 2006.
- WSH (General Provisions) Regulations
- Workplace Safety and Health (Construction) Regulations 2007
- SS 562: 2010 Code of practice for safety in trenches, pits, and other excavated areas
- CP 18: 1992 Code of practice for earthworks
 Ground condition shall be properly studied and all existing services (if any) should be located by
engaging a Licensed Cable Detection Worker (LCDW) prior to the commencement of
excavation work.
 Existing services shall be diverted accordingly or warning signs shall be displayed where
necessary.
 A designated person shall be engaged to supervise the excavation works.
 An excavation permit shall be applied and approved before starting excavation works.
 For trench excavation of more than 1.5m, shoring shall be provided and shall be designed by a
Professional Engineer.
 Proper drainage or pumping should be provided to channel water out of the excavation vicinity.
 Open sides of the excavation shall be guarded by adequate barricades; where a person is liable to
fall.
 Proper means of access shall be provided; if the excavation exceeds 1.2m meters deep
 The distance between the access points must not exceed 9m.
 Proper shoring shall be provided if the excavation exceeds 1.5 m deep.
 Warning signs shall be placed at strategic and conspicuous position to warn and prevent workers
from entering the dangerous area.
 Materials shall be stored 610mm away from the edge of the excavation.
 Equipment and spoil must not be placed near the edge of an excavation or trench where a
collapse of the walls may result.
 The excavation surface should be properly paved or excavated accordingly to prevent from
sliding.
 Supervisor in charge of excavation should check the excavation after stormy weather as per
excavation check list.
 The Machinery should be operated by the competent person as well authorized by the company.

6.0 Backfilling
 Check ground for stability before proceeding backfilling work.
 Ensure that all other workers are clear of working areas.
 Ensure the operators of any equipment being used in backfilling operations shall keep
their spotters in sight at all times.
 Ensure that Operators and banksman are familiar with hand signals for their work site.
 Ensure that all employees wear the appropriate PPE (including high visibility reflective
vests).

7.0 Reporting Injuries & Accidents


 Report every work injury or illness immediately to the first aider or safety supervisor/officer
 All accidents involving damages to equipment and materials, including motor vehicles, are to be
reported immediately to your supervisor so that an investigation may be carried out to establish
the cause of accident and determine whether it is safe to re‐commence work.

8.0 Reporting Unsafe & Hazardous Conditions


 Report any unsafe or hazardous conditions immediately to your supervisor and/or engineer

 Measures shall be taken to rectify the condition to prevent potential accidents from occurring.
