Statement
Determine coefficient of static friction ( µs ) of different surfaces.
Apparatus
• Inclined Plane with Protector • Wooden Block
• Meter Rod • Three different surfaces
Procedure
1. First prepare three surfaces (A: wood, B: smooth, C: rough) having same surface area.
2. Now place the inclined plane in horizontal position where it is balanced.
3. Put the block on the inclined plane and note its initial position.
4. Gradually tilt the plane until the block starts sliding, and then fix the plane at that angle.
5. Measure the angle of the inclined plane and record the horizontal (x – axis) and vertical (y – axis)
displacements. Use this data to calculate the angle and coefficient of friction.

2. Rough 73.3 40.5 0.552 29⁰ 0.554
3. Smooth 71.9 41.4 0.576 31⁰ 0.601
Result
Thus the coefficients of static friction of different surfaces are:
Wooden = 0.532
Rough = 0.554
Smooth = 0.601
Conclusion
• Different surfaces show varying coefficients of static friction, highlighting the impact of surface
texture.
• The angle at which wooden block starts to slide directly relates to the angle indicating greater
resistance.
• ϴsmooth > ϴrough > ϴwooden
