Step #1: Create a List of Keywords

Backlinko
Keyword research is usually the first step of any legit SEO strategy.

And one of the best ways to find keywords that your target customers search for?

Google Suggest.

Start typing a keyword into Google’s search field, and it will populate a list of
suggestions:

7
These usually make great keywords for SEO because they come straight from
Google.

(Which means you know that people are actually searching for them.)

Plus, longer keywords (known as “long tail keywords”) tend to be less competitive than
“short tail” terms.

8
So even though long tails have relatively low search volume levels, they’re much easier
to rank for.

I recommend typing a few different keywords into Google until you have a list of about
10 keywords.

If you want to check out the search volume and competition levels for those terms, you
can use a keyword tool like Semrush or Ubersuggest. Or Backlinko’s free keyword
generator.

If you want to dive deeper into keyword research, you can check out this video.

Advanced Keyword Research Tutorial (5-Step Blueprint)

Keyword Research Checklist

Backlinko

Keyword Research is the foundation of SEO. And in this checklist we’ll show you how to
quickly find relevant keywords that your potential customers search for.

Identify Your Target Market

Before you can find the right keywords to target, you need to understand who is
searching for them. And what they are looking to learn/gain from the content they find
(also known as the search intent).

Consider:

● Who your ideal customer is: What does the customer profile look like of

someone buying your product or service? What language do they use and what

kind of content do they consume?

● What their pain points are: What problems are they facing? How can you help

solve those issues?

● What platforms they hang out on: Are they searching for things related to what

you sell? Or are they more likely to be active on social media?

● What they search for: If they are actively searching for your kinds of

products/services/content, what terms do they use?

The next steps will show you how to find these terms.

Discover Long Tail Keywords with “Google Suggest”

This is one of the easiest ways to uncover long tail keywords.

Here’s how it works:

10
First, type a keyword into Google.

But don’t press enter, or the “Google Search” button. Instead, check out the keywords
that Google shows you:

(These are known as “Google Suggest” keywords.)

Because these keywords come straight from Google, you KNOW that people, some of
whom might be your target audience, are searching for them.

This means that they make valuable keywords to optimize your site around.

11
Pro tip: Check out SearchResponse.io. This tool scrapes Google for other searches

users make, which makes this process much easier to scale.

Find Keywords with the Backlinko Keyword Tool

Keyword research tools are another useful way to find terms to target with your content.
And Backlinko’s free keyword research tool is an excellent place to start.

Just pop a broad term related to your business into the tool. And you’ll get a bunch of
related keywords to use for creating content.

12
Complete with metrics like search volume and cost per click.

Tap Into Online Communities

Reddit, Quora, forums and other online communities are excellent places to find
keywords.

They’re full of real people with real problems. Problems you can solve with your
products, services, or content.

How do you find keywords using these communities?

13
You could just browse relevant sub-communities for ideas.

But a targeted approach is to use search operators on a platform like Reddit. These are
terms you add to the search bar to narrow down your search.

14
Focus on “problem” related search terms:

● “How to”

● “I wish”

● “Where can I”

They can highlight ideas right in the search results for content you could create to help
solve those pain points.

And clicking into the discussions could give you even more ideas. As people in the
comments may discuss their own related problems too.

Identify Low Competition Keywords with Semrush

Semrush’s Keyword Magic Tool is a freemium keyword research tool. (You can run up to
10 searches per day with a free account.)

And with each search, you get tons of data on each keyword.

15
As you can see, when you type a keyword into Semrush, you get information on:

● Search volume

● Keyword difficulty

● CPC

● Trends

● SERP features

● Potential traffic estimates

And more.

16
That way, you can choose low-competition keywords that are easy to rank for. And you
can understand which keywords are likely to yield the best results for your website.

Find Question Keywords

Question keywords are PERFECT for blog posts and articles.

For example: “How do you make cold brew coffee?”

And you can easily find them with Answer The Public.

This freemium tool shows you questions that people search for online.

17
That way, you can answer these questions with your content.

You can also use the Keyword Magic Tool from Semrush to find question keywords. As
the tool has a specific filter for questions.

Conduct a Topical Authority Analysis

Topical authority is a measure of how authoritative your website is about a specific topic.

In other words: how much should people (and Google) trust you as a reliable source of
information about that subject?

18
You can quickly analyze your site’s topical authority with this handy spreadsheet.

It lets you analyze Google Search Console keyword data to see what topics you’re
already ranking for. And to identify related topics where you lack coverage. (i.e.,
opportunities where you could rank higher and get more traffic.)

This helps you spot gaps in your content and find opportunities to expand your topical
authority.

How I Rank Keywords | I Do Not Even Write | Semantic
SEO In 1 Min
Jairo David Guerrero Vasquez

I recently started to use semantic maps in my SEO content strategy

In 2012 you could rank #1 in keyword stuffing

In 2024 you rank #1 like this

B2B Example:

1 - Get your core topic:

example:
↳ "email marketing"

2 - Transform it into a "how to [topic]"

example:
↳ "how to 2x MRR with email marketing"

3 - Now get 5 long-tail topics

Each long-tail topic has to cover a subtopic from the "how to"

example:
↳ "email marketing best practices"
↳ "best email marketing tools"
↳ "email marketing templates"
↳ "marketing automation tips"
↳ "mailchimp vs mailerlite"

21
4 - Get top competitors for each topic
Create a mind map: ___ watch video ___

5 - Instead of keyword stuffing

Do cross-topic writing
Use the semantic map from previous step
Try to make your article visually relevant

Each piece of content leans to the next piece

Each paragraph needs to be written to cover the intent (problems-to-be-solved) of the

reader

Each page in the website has to complement and enrich the other pages/articles

Do it even better:

- Add schema data

- Transform each section into a new article

- Stay middle-length topics, your super "how to" might rank for keywords you did
not even write (aka do not go so deep into long tail)

You ain't #1 yet?

Go deeper into each topic

Rinse and repeat

22
How do you stay topic-relevant?

We fixed a keyword cannibalization issue.

When you produce content at scale — you often produce two articles that could've
really been one.

89% of websites drive ZERO organic traffic.

Nick Zviadadze
Not because finding keywords is hard.

But because they target impossible keywords they'll never rank for.

Here's my 5-step process to find low-competition keywords.

1. Create a list of seed keywords for your niche.

For example, let’s say you’re in the fitness niche.

Seed keywords could be:

- Lose weight
- Gain muscle
- Working out
- Home workout
- Body transformation

(Pro tip - ask ChatGPT to generate seed keywords for your niche)

2. Run your seed keywords through Semrush, and set the keyword difficulty filter to 0 to
30%.

Optionally, if you’re looking for high buyer intent keywords, you can also set your CPC
to 3 USD plus.

42
Rinse-repeat process for all seed keywords, and add them to a Google Sheet for
tracking.

3. Don’t take the keyword difficulty metric at face value.

Google your keywords, and double-check that they are, in fact, low difficulty.

If the keyword is dominated by large brands/websites, they’re not really that easy to
rank for.

4. Once you’ve collected 100+ low-difficulty keywords on a Google Sheet, copy-paste

them all into ChatGPT.

Ask it to find the pattern behind your keywords, and accordingly, generate dozens of
new low-difficulty keywords.

Half the output will be worthless, the other half will be very solid.

5. Finally, take the keywords that make sense, and put them on your Google Sheet.
Extract the keyword difficulty from Semrush, and double-check with a manual search.

From there, simply sort your sheet by ascending keyword difficulty, and start pushing
out content!

Low competition SEO keywords are GOLD.

They're easier to rank for.

They can still pack a punch.
They help drive more SEO traffic.
They give positive signs to Google.
They are often BOFU and MOFU.

When I start SEO KW research, I always start here.

Go for the "low hanging fruit" first then go upstream.

Don't go for super competitive keywords first.

You'll lose, get frustrated, and quit.

That's a recipe for disaster.

Start with the low KD keywords first.

Plenty of checklists show you how to find keywords

Leigh McKenzie
but few that help you decide which ones to choose.

So, once you have a list of potential keywords in hand, you might be asking yourself...

57
Which keywords should I choose?

Use this 4-step checklist to identify the best keywords for your ecommerce site:

𝟏. 𝐒𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐕𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐦𝐞 📊
✔️
[ ] Enter each potential keyword into Google Keyword Planner (GKP) to check the
"Avg. monthly searches"

[✔️] Determine what counts as “high” and “low” search volume in your industry
[✔️] Look for seasonal fluctuations in search volume using KWFinder or similar tools

[✔️] Prioritize keywords that maintain steady search volume year-round, or note when
seasonal keywords peak

𝟐. 𝐊𝐞𝐲𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐝-𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭 𝐅𝐢𝐭 🎯
[✔️] Ensure each keyword directly aligns with the products you sell
[✔️] Avoid using high-volume keywords that don’t fit your product offering

[✔️] Consider stretching into adjacent product categories only after targeting direct-fit
keywords

✔️
[ ] Choose more targeted keywords that may have lower volume but higher relevance
to your products

𝟑. 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭 💸
✔️
[ ] Use GKP’s “Competition” rating to assess the commercial value of each keyword
(stick to "medium" or "high" competition keywords)

✔️
[ ] Check the “Top of Page Bid” in GKP—higher bids suggest a stronger likelihood of
conversion

58
[✔️] Focus on keywords that indicate purchase intent, such as “buy [product] online”
[✔️] Avoid keywords that attract informational searchers (e.g., “what is green tea”)

𝟒. 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 🏆
[✔️] Use Semrush (or a similar tool) to check the “Keyword Difficulty” score
[✔️] Review the top 10 ranking pages for each keyword to see how well-optimized they
are

✔️
[ ] Identify gaps in competitor pages—can you create better content for the same
keyword?

✔️
[ ] Aim for keywords with manageable competition and the potential for outranking
poorly optimized pages
