COMPUTER

Types of Computers

Computers are classified into types based on their size, processing power, and usage.

Each type is designed to perform different levels of tasks — from simple to very complex.

5 Main Types of Computers:

Supercomputer

Fastest and most powerful computers in the world.

Used for weather forecasting, space research, nuclear science

Can perform millions of calculations per second

Example: PARAM, IBM Summit, Fugaku (Japan)

India's first supercomputer was "PARAM 8000".

Name: PARAM 8000

Launched: 1991

Developed by: C-DAC (Centre for Development of Advanced Computing)

Location: Pune, India

Performance: 1 Gigaflop (1 billion calculations per second)

Mainframe Computer

Big, powerful computers used by large organizations.

Can handle hundreds of users at once

Used in banks, railways, airlines, insurance companies

Example: IBM Z Series, UNIVAC

Mini Computer

Medium-sized, used in small to medium businesses.

Less powerful than mainframes but good for multiple users

Used in labs, institutes, and companies

Example: PDP-11, VAX

Microcomputer (Personal Computer - PC)

Most common and widely used type.

For personal or office work

Small in size, easy to use

Example: Desktop, Laptop, Tablet, Smartphones

Workstation

High-performance PCs used by designers, engineers, programmers

More power and speed than normal PCs

Used for 3D animation, software development, CAD

Example: Dell Precision, HP Z Series

⚙ Applications (Real-World Use):

1. Supercomputers → Climate models, defense simulations

2. Mainframes → Bank transactions, ATMs

3. Mini Computers → Small business data processing

4. Microcomputers → Study, Internet, Gaming

5. Workstations → Graphic designing, Engineering tools
