ABSTRACT
Title: The Impact of Social Media on Academic Performance
Abstract: This study explores the impact of social media on academic
performance among university students. A survey was conducted among 200
students from various faculties to gather data on their social media usage and
academic performance. The results showed that there is a significant correlation
between social media usage and academic performance. It was found that students
who spent more time on social media had lower grades, while those who spent less
time on social media had higher grades. The study concludes that excessive use of
social media can negatively affect academic performance. The study recommends
that students should limit their social media usage to improve their academic
performance.
ACTIVITY:
Identify the weaknesses in the abstract provided above. Discuss at least three
specific areas where the abstract could be improved.
● MISSING KEY ELEMENTS:
The abstract indicates that a survey was conducted among 200 students. However,
it omits important methodological details. There is no information about the design
of the survey, Which type of questions asked, how participants were selected, or
the data collection method. This omission of key elements hinders the reader’s
ability to assess the reliability, validity, and potential biases of the study. Without
these details, the results cannot be properly evaluated or replicated.
● 2. AMBITIOUS LANGUAGE AND OVERGENERALIZATION
The abstract uses vague terms such as “significant correlation” and “higher” or
“lower” grades without providing specific data or statistical values. This kind of
ambiguous language makes it difficult to assess the strength and relevance of the
findings. Additionally, the statement that students who spent more time on social
media had lower grades suggests a causal relationship, even though the study
design appears to be correlational. This overgeneralization can mislead readers
about the nature of the relationship between social media usage and academic
performance.
● WEAK & CONCLUSION AND OVERLY SIMPLISTIC
RECOMMENDATION
The conclusion and recommendation are overly general and deterministic,
implying a direct causal relationship without any supporting evidence. Correlation
does not imply causation, and the suggestion that "students should limit their social
media use" may oversimplify a complex issue.
