Class 9 Tissues Simplified

The document explains the concept of tissues as groups of similar cells working together, detailing the organization in living beings from cells to organisms. It categorizes plant tissues into meristematic, permanent, and protective tissues, while animal tissues are divided into epithelial, connective, muscular, and nervous tissues. Additionally, it highlights the differences between plant and animal tissues and provides practice questions for reinforcement.

Class 9 Science - Chapter: TISSUES (Simplified)

What is a Tissue?

A tissue is a group of similar cells that work together to do the same job.

Organization in Living Beings:

Cells -> Tissues -> Organs -> Organ Systems -> Organism

PLANT TISSUES

1. Meristematic Tissue:

- Keeps dividing to help the plant grow.

- Types:

a) Apical: At tips, helps plant grow taller.

b) Intercalary: At base of leaves, helps increase length.

c) Lateral: On sides, helps plant become thicker.

2. Permanent Tissue:

- Cells don't divide anymore, fixed shape & function.

- Types:

a) Simple: Parenchyma (stores food), Collenchyma (gives flexibility), Sclerenchyma (gives

strength).

b) Complex:

- Xylem: Carries water & minerals (made of tracheids, vessels, etc.).

- Phloem: Carries food (made of sieve tubes, companion cells, etc.).

3. Protective Tissues:
- Epidermis: Outer layer, prevents water loss & infection.

- Cork: Outer bark, made of dead cells, protects plant.

ANIMAL TISSUES

1. Epithelial Tissue:

- Covers body and organs. Types: Squamous, Cuboidal, Columnar, Ciliated, Stratified.

2. Connective Tissue:

- Connects and supports body parts. Types:

- Blood: Transports oxygen & nutrients.

- Bone: Hard structure.

- Cartilage: Flexible.

- Tendon: Connects muscle to bone.

- Ligament: Connects bone to bone.

- Areolar: Fills spaces.

- Adipose: Stores fat.

3. Muscular Tissue:

- Helps in movement.

- Striated (voluntary, in limbs),

- Smooth (involuntary, in organs),

- Cardiac (involuntary, in heart).

4. Nervous Tissue:

- Made of neurons, sends signals.

- Dendrites receive signals, axon sends them.

Differences Between Plant and Animal Tissues:

- Plants: Limited growth areas, mostly dead cells.

- Animals: Grow all over, mostly living cells.

Practice Questions:

1. Fill in the blanks:

- Lateral meristem increases ________.

- Collenchyma is a ________ tissue.

2. Which tissue has dead cells? Answer: Sclerenchyma.

3. Why do meristematic cells lack vacuoles? They don't store food.
