CHAPTER 6

FUTURE WORK

● Integration with renewable energy sources:

To further decarbonize the process, we can focus on integrating renewable energy
sources (such as solar or wind) for process heating and steam generation. This would
reduce the carbon footprint of the gasification process and align with global trends
green hydrogen production.
● Co-Gasification with Biomass or Other Wastes
Future studies can explore co-gasification of plastics with biomass or municipal solid
waste. This approach can balance the high carbon content of plastics with the high ash
and moisture content of biomass, potentially improving syngas yield, process
stability, and sustainability
● Catalyst Development for Tar Reduction
Tar formation remains a significant challenge in plastic gasification. Research into
novel catalysts (e.g., Ni-based, olivine, or dolomite) and catalytic reactor designs can
help minimize tar and improve syngas purity, making downstream processing more
efficient
● Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU) Integration
Integrating carbon capture technologies with the gasification process can further
reduce emissions. Captured CO₂ can be utilized in downstream processes (e.g.,
methanol synthesis or enhanced oil recovery), creating additional value streams and
supporting circular economy principles
● Valorisation of Byproducts
Future work can focus on the valorisation of byproducts such as char, ash, and
recovered metals. These materials can be used in construction, agriculture, or as
adsorbents, contributing to a zero-waste process and additional revenue streams
