Research Project

This document presents a research project that analyzes the influence of mobile phone usage on students' academic performance. The objective is to evaluate the effects of mobile phone use and determine measures for better use in the classroom. It reviews previous research on the topic and establishes independent variables such as mobile phone use in class and dependent variables such as the consequences on performance. The study is justified to raise awareness about the appropriate use of technology and benefit learning.

analyze the influence of cell phone use on academic performance

Barcelona, March 29, 2022

CHAPTER I

Analyze the influence of cellphone use on academic performance

Statement of the problem (deductive method)

Currently, with the introduction of technological devices such as the cell phone, it has made
that young people become addicted to this type of device, resulting in the fact that they do not
they know how to manage their study time and their recreational time with the same, affecting their
school performance. In this regard, Cruz (2012) states that just over 50% of adolescents
Young people feel overwhelmed if they don't have a mobile phone, and 12% of them use it excessively.
According to other authors, it is claimed that the cellphone, internet, and other technological devices that can

being seen as mere entertainment, it can become an addiction, producing a

imbalance in adolescents and/or young people that hinders their socialization and obstructs their
performance and academic development. Lastly, they assert that this results in
school and social failure, behavioral disorders, and progressive confinement in themselves.
Experts assure that the frequent and excessive use of electronic devices, without breaks,
leads, in the long term, to problems in the finger joints, vision, and sleep,
dependency on technology, etc.
At an international level, specifically in the country of Peru, according to the research work of the

socioeconomic groups possess, at least, a smartphone; which they use constantly and for
large amounts of time, showing some dependence on mobile phone usage, which comes
generating negative consequences in their learning process and consequently in their
academic performance. The problem worsens even more when the student shows to have
a certain dependence on the cell phone, which is reflected when it is used during class hours
producing interruptions in its development, as the student shows more
interest in using the cell phone rather than attending class.

General objective:

- At the Nuestra Señora de la Consolación School with the 5th year 'B' students analyze
the influence of mobile phone usage on academic performance

Specific objectives:
-
- Evaluate the effects of using a cell phone
- Determine the measures that can be applied for better use of the cell phone in the classroom
Justification of the study

This century has brought with it a great technological advance, which, while true, has benefited the
society, it is also the same society that is concerned about its counterpart in the
youth community and how electronic devices have affected adolescents in their
family and social lives, in their health and in their academic development.
This research is justified because the study has provided valuable insights through
conclusions and suggestions on the excessive use of mobile phones and learning;
knowledge that should serve as a reference to raise awareness among both parents and teachers
and students that the proper use of technological devices can benefit and
improve the way knowledge is transmitted and acquired, in a more dynamic way
and productive adapted evolution of society

Importance of the study

For us, this study is highly relevant for young people to know the benefits that
You can have your phone while studying, but you should also know the consequences and
repercussions of the frequent and excessive use of mobile phones (and other devices
technological), causes negative effects on physical, mental, and emotional health. It is important
inquire as it can often be observed in the classroom that there are students focused on their
phones and fewer people interacting with each other. It will be possible to determine if it is really necessary.

set limits with young students on how to use technologies and the
time they dedicate to them.

Identification of the variables

Independents:
- There is a total of 33 students, of which 16 are female and 17 are male.
male, aged between 15 and 18 years.
- The use of mobile phones in the classroom.
Dependents:
- Consequences of excessive use both inside and outside the classroom
performance and academic development.
- Schedule and type of use implemented with the mobile phone.

Delimitations

This research has faced limitations when investigating the influence of use of the
cell phone in academic performance at the national level (Venezuela), due to lack of information
specific and truthful.

CHAPTER II: THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

Background of the research

There is a high percentage of students who use their cell phones in the classroom, which has an impact
in their learning, causing distraction and evasion of classes leading to little
receptiveness to the contents and harming their academic performance. It has been determined that
The use of mobile phones in the classroom interferes with learning, as young people tend to
to distract oneself, and in some cases it constitutes a modern tool for cheating in the

the survey was used as an instrument, in addition to the direct observation of the population and

Theoretical bases:
Mobile technology began to develop from the mid-20th century. Basically
It consists of a set of antennas with the ability to receive and send radio signals, antennas
that form a network. This technology allows communication between cell phones as well as with
landlines. Given the advantages that this type of telephony had, developed countries

Cell phones have incorporated different tools over the years such as
the possibility of receiving and transmitting data, the possibility of establishing a connection with the internet,

In addition, technology can and has come to benefit the way in which it is taught.
education. The expert in technological tools for education, Isabel Sagenmüller,
ensures that incorporating technological tools in education brings benefits that
they promote knowledge and interaction, as well as efficiency and productivity in the classroom
of classes between teachers and students.” According to their analysis, teachers and students can
reduce the time they spend on their activities, whether assigning a task or receiving it, thus
also, technology makes it easier for teachers when correcting and grading the
different tasks of their students, as they can be more efficient. There is a greater
communication between teachers and students both inside and outside academic institutions,
through text messaging. The use of new technologies in education allows for the
cost reduction since physical material is not necessary and everything can be done through a
program or app. Students and teachers can search for and provide quality information.
quick and effective way in real time.
But, in all this, it has also been medically demonstrated that the frequent use of these
devices can cause health consequences. According to the study of 'Lighting
Research Center (LRC) of the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York, it was reached to the
conclusion that prolonged exposure to electronic devices such as
computer, cell phone, and tablet affect melatonin levels, a hormone that regulates the cycle of

It has also been shown that people create a degree of dependency so high that it leads to
