Different ways of getting


learners to write
• Modeled writing- The teacher demonstrates a
specific aspect of writing to the whole class.
• For example, a new writing skill, text form,
genre, or format.
• The text produced is based on a situation on
which learners have experience;
• This makes it easier for learners to relate to
the contents of the writing.
• The teacher is the scribe and provides full
support;
• He models what a proficient writer does;
• Thus demonstrating the process of putting
thoughts and feelings into written form;
• By observing this process, students learn that
even proficient writers make mistakes, and
that all work can be revised or edited.
• Finished products should be displayed at eye
level to allow students to read and reread the
text.

Frequency of modeled writing


• Should occur daily as an integral part of the
literacy block in kindergarten to Grade 3.
Shared writing
• This allows students and teachers to work
together on a piece of writing;
• The teacher is the scribe/transcriber
• Students and the teacher collaborate to create
the text;
• The teacher composes a lot of texts with his
students, teacher and learners write together.
• The work that is produced should be easily
available to students so they may read it over and
over and use it as a model for their writing.
Independent writing
• This gives students to do their own writing;
• They can select topics to write about or can be
assigned topics;
• This occurs as a follow up to a series of writing
lessons, involving modeled, shared and guided
writing.
Writing/writers’ workshops
• Teachers work one on one, and with small
groups teaching them strategies that will
improve their writing skill
Difference between formal text writing and
creative writing [this we did, is it not so?].
Now, lets’ talk about integrating grammar in
writing lessons. How can we do this?
Process writing
• How do we apply process writing through
writers’ workshop approach, integrating
punctuation, grammar and other writing
conventions?
Controlled writing
• Focuses on the form technique of writing and
not on content;
• It gives children a clear focus in their writing;
• For example, it helps children with letter
formation;
• Children can be given a worksheet with
tracing activities that will help them to focus
on the shape and direction of the letter;
• Controlled writing is more of guided writing.
Free writing

• Here children are given an open ended activity


that allows them to come up with their own
ideas;
• Children write all of their thoughts without
stopping and without regard for spelling,
grammar or any rule for spelling.
Group writing
• Group writing involves writing a text
collaboratively or in a group;
• It may also involve editing each other’s
written text;
• It may involve two or more learners working
together to produce a written text.
Writing using Pictures
• Here we use picture prompts to write;
• The pictures act as stimuli for writing;
• A picture prompt is a type of writing prompt
that uses an image to start a story;
• Learners then create a story, using the picture
as a setting.
Writing games
Writing are all fun and encourage children to write.
For example,
• Telephone Pictionary: This game is quite engaging
and may promote learners’ creativity, while at the
same time push them to write;
• You should have many players here with paper
and pencils;
• Every player simply writes a sentence on the
paper and passes the paper on;
• The next player will draw what is represented by
the sentence, and fold down the paper so only
the drawing is visible, then passes the sheet;
• The next player will write a sentence that
describes the drawing and fold the sheet to keep
only their sentence visible;
• The paper keeps going around in this way until it
is full;
• Then, all players can compare the original
sentence with what happened later for laughs.
Story telling
• You will need paper and pencils;
• All kids will get to write a story together;
• You can write the first sentence of the story;
• Then over the next two minutes, the children will write
down the next step of the story;
• After two minutes their paper goes to someone else
who will continue the story;
• These papers go around a few times until such time as
the story is done;
• Then you can enjoy sharing the different and funny
stories that were created.
Birthday Cards
• Every time there is a family birthday or special
event, or during the holidays,
• You can your children to write the birthday
card;
• This will make them speak their thoughts
about their family members as well as
• Encouraging them to write in the process.
Cursive name writing
• This game can be exciting to learn to write in
cursive;
• You can take a sheet and fold it in half;
• Ask your children to write their names in cursive
in large script, along the top of the folded
crease/fold;
• They can trace over the writing time and time
again; then they go over the folded piece until
they create a mirror image on the other side of
the sheet;
• Then they can cut out their names.
