S5 Eot Phy

This document outlines the end-of-term assessment for S.5 Physics students at King Jesus College Mubuku, consisting of seven items that cover various physics concepts and calculations. Students are instructed to attempt five items, which include tasks related to design engineering, highway safety, sprint analysis, optics, projectile motion, basic physics definitions, and motion graphs. Each item requires students to perform calculations, explain concepts, and apply their understanding to real-world scenarios.

END OF TERM II ASSESEMENT
PHYSICS
S.5
Paper 1
Duration: 2½ HOURS
INSTRUCTIONS
This paper consists of Seven examination items.
Attempt 5 items.
Be neat.
Item 1
You are working as a design engineer at a manufacturing
company. Your team is developing new
high precision weighing scales that will be used in laboratories to
measure small masses
accurately. The device must be calibrated correctly to ensure
precision in its measurements.
Before proceeding with the design, you need to verify the
consistency of formulas used in the
calculation.
Tasks
a. Identify the fundamental and derived physical quantities
required in the calibration of the weighing scale.
b. Use dimensional analysis to check whether the following
equations used in scale design are
dimensionally consistent.

c. The oscillation period of the scale’s pan. T= 2𝜋 √𝑔 𝑙 Explain why

Item 2
You are a highway safety engineer designing an emergency
escape ramp from runway trucks. A
10,000kg truck moving downhill at 30ms-1 must stop safely using
the ramp, which is 500m long
and has a gravel surface providing friction.
Task
a. Calculate the minimum deceleration needed for the truck to
stop within 500m
distance.
b. Determine the time required for the truck to come to a
complete stop.
c. Explain how the choice of gravel, sand or other surfaces affects
the stopping
distance.
d. Discuss real world factors like brake failure and weather
conditions that impact the
design.
Item 3.
You are a coach analysing a sprinter’s 100meter dash. The
sprinter starts from rest and accelerates
at 2.3ms-1 for the first 4 seconds then continues at a constant
velocity until the finishing line.
Task
a. Calculate the maximum velocity the sprinter reaches.
b. Determine the total time the sprinter takes to complete the
race.
c. Explain how reaction time and running technique affect the
overall performance.
Item 4.
In S.5 class, there is a hole on the roof where light rays usually
pass through at mid-day. A
stubborn student used a mirror to direct light to different learners
sitting at different positions.
Upon filling their complaint, the head boy is wondering the
relationship between the angle of
rotation of the mirror and the angle of deviation of the reflected
ray.
Tasks
a. Use a derivation to explain to the head boy that the angle of
deviation of the
reflected ray is twice the angle of rotation of the mirror.
b. The teacher of Physics said that what this stubborn boy was
doing can be
applied either in optical galvanometer or sextant. Explain how
any of the two
devices work.
ITEM 5
Talent is driving a car which was from rest at a uniform
acceleration with a speed of 20m/s. After
5 second he stops to urinate by the road side, As he is by the
road side, he projects a ball of hall
from the ground an initial velocity of 30m/s at an angle of 40 0C to
the horizontal ground.
TASK
a) Calculate the acceleration and the distance covered in this
time he spend driving.
b) Determine the horizontal and vertical components of velocity

c) Calculate the time of flight of the ball of hall and determine the

ITEM 6
A Senior one student approaches you and asks about
displacement, velocity, acceleration . she
says that she is also confused about the difference between
speed and velocity. She also tells about
the scenario she found in the physics laboratory, she says that
she found one student performing
an experiment to determine acceleration due to gravity using a
simple pendulum.
TASK
a) By definition help her know more about displacement, velocity
and acceleration also solve her
confusion about speed and velocity.
b) explaining the procedure and how the measurements are used
to calculate gravitation
acceleration. Explain the experiment in the scenario to this senior
one student.
ITEM 7
A cyclist starts from rest and accelerates uniformly at 2m -2 for 10
seconds. He then moves at a
constant speed for 5 seconds before coming to rest uniformly in
another 4 seconds.
a) Sketch a velocity-time graph for this motion.
b) Determine the total distance covered by the cyclist
c) Calculate the total time taken for the entire journey.
