Software and Operating Systems
Software is the part of a computer system that we cannot touch. It includes all the programs and
operating systems that tell the hardware what to do. Without software, hardware would be
useless. There are two main types of software: system software and application software.
System software includes operating systems like Windows, macOS, and Linux, which help
manage the computer’s resources and allow other programs to run. Application software
includes programs like Microsoft Word (for writing documents), Google Chrome (for
browsing the internet), and Adobe Photoshop (for editing photos). For example, when you open
Microsoft Word to write a letter, you're using application software that depends on the system
software to function. These software programs are created using programming languages and are
regularly updated to improve performance or fix bugs. In smartphones, apps like WhatsApp,
Instagram, or YouTube are all forms of application software. Software is essential in every
field today, including education, business, health, and entertainment.
