Course Description This course explores the principles and practices of communication
in the context of risk management, disaster response, and
humanitarian efforts. Students will learn about the significance of
effective communication strategies and tools in mitigating disasters,
facilitating recovery, and enhancing community resilience.
Course Objectives 1. Understand the key concepts of risk, disaster, and
humanitarian communication.
2. Analyze case studies of successful and unsuccessful
communication during disasters.
3. Develop skills to create effective communication strategies
for various stakeholders.
4. Examine the role of media, technology, and social networks
in disaster communication.
5. Assess ethical considerations and challenges in humanitarian
communication.

• Psychological aspects of risk perception
• The social amplification of risk

WEEK 4: Communication Strategies
• The 4S Model (Sender, Message, Receiver, and Feedback)
• Integrated communication frameworks
• Target audience analysis and segmentation
WEEK 5: Media’s Role in Disaster Communication
