(Short Answer Type Questions)
Answer any three from the following: 3×5=15

s
No.

2. Write short notes on minor methods of disinfection of water treatment 5 3

process.

3. A pumping test was made in a medium sand and gravel to a depth of 5 2

15 m where a bed of clay was encountered. The normal ground water
level was at surface. Observation holes were located at distance 3 m
and 7.5 m from the pumping well. At a discharge of 3.6 lit/sec from
the pumping well a steady state was attained in about 24 hours. The
drawdown at 3 m was 1.65 m and at 7.5 m was 0.36 m. Compute the
co-efficient of permeability of the soil.

4. Change in concentration of organic matter L with time t is given by- 5 5

dL/dt = -KL. Calculate the organic matter remaining after 3 days if the
initial concentration was 200mg/lit and K=0.4 per day.

5. Distinguish between Slow Sand Filter and Rapid Sand Filter. 5 4

GROUP – C

(Long Answer Type Questions)

Answer any three from the following 3×15=45

C
Mark

No.

7. (a) Discuss the Surface Water Treatment Strategies with a neat 8 5

schematic diagram and explain each of the processes.

(b) The following observations were made on a 3% dilution of waste 7 6

water :-
i. D.O of aerated water used for dilution = 3.0 mg/L
ii. D.O of diluted sample after 5 days incubation = 0.8 mg/L
iii. D.O of original sample = 0.6 mg/L
Calculate the BOD of 5 days of the sample.

process the water for a town with population of 275000. Water
demand is 200lit/capita/day. Rate of filtration is 15m /m /hr. Allow

filter unit is (10m×4m). Also compute up flow velocity and head loss
to expand the bed to 0.66m. Porosity of bed is 0.5, specific gravity of
solid is 2.5, Average particle size is 0.6mm, C =25.2.

a rate of 135 lit/person/day. Assume a detention period of 24 hours
and 75% of the supplied water becomes wastewater. The tank is
cleaned once in a year. The rate of deposition of sludge is 40
lit/person/year. The depth of the tank is to be kept as 2 m, providing a
freeboard of 0.3 m.
